For those from ages 18-59) &

ABSTINENCE (No meat for those age 14 and older).

The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.

From the Pastor’s Desk…

“Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt. 5:48)

For some, this is the most challenging, most difficult and most confounding passage in all of the Gospels. It demands turning the other cheek, giving away your cloak, loving your ene-

mies and praying for your persecutors. It calls us to be like Christ and be “perfect, like the Father is perfect.”

Consider all the people who stabbed you in the back, hurt you and spread rumors about you. Those who have lied to you and have let you down. Those who have broken your confidence and wounded your trust. Now Jesus is asking you to love them and pray for them. Pray for

their good. Pray that grace will come into their lives. I know it’s actually pleasurable to do the opposite—to hate your enemies and to wish the worst on your persecutors, to enjoy

their setbacks and suffering. Jesus encourages us to treat each other with love and not with revenge. Jesus says “offer

no resistance to the one who is evil” (Mt 5:39). Jesus himself forgives those who were hurting and torturing Him on the Cross. He asks much more of his disciples than did the Old Law of retaliation (“an eye for an eye”). He expects greater maturity and mercy from us.

Some people are of the opinion that the Sermon on the Mount was meant for super heroes.

Not so fast... the teachings are meant for each of us who are baptized in His name and are members of His Church. These are not easy teachings. Each of us is a work in progress, but we shouldn’t get discouraged. We cannot live the teachings of this greatest sermon by our

own strength, but let us always remember what the angel said to Mary at the time of the An-nunciation of the birth of Jesus, "For nothing is impossible for God” (Lk 1:37).

Ash Wednesday (February 26, 2020) The Season of Lent begins this Wednesday. Ash Wednesday always occurs six and a half

weeks before Easter, encompassing the 40 day period of Lent (technically 46, since Sundays are skipped). It is a special time for us to take a deeper look at our lives and how we are re-sponding to the Gospel message. During this time, we are called to observe the three tradi-

tional components of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

I encourage all of you to do something special for this Lent 2020. Here are some of the sug-

gestions: Pray the Rosary and Stations of the Cross. Give up desserts, alcohol and smoking. Eat less, pray more, be generous, help others, get priorities straight, choose God, go for

confession and let Jesus lead the way.

God bless you!

sonas a venir.

PROGRAMA DE ESTUDIO BÍBLICO DE

CUARESMA

INFANT JESUS NOVENA

The monthly Infant Jesus Novena for the month

of February will be on Friday, February 28th, at 7:00 pm in the Faith Formation Chapel. In the stories told about the history of this novena, a

number of times, Jesus made known the power of this novena which is approaching Jesus in His infancy. Invite others to come along.

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY PROGRAM

Desirous to do something extra this Lenten sea-

son? “No Greater Love” is a biblical walk through Christ’s Passion. This program was

filmed in the Holy Land. It is a biblical pilgrimage that reveals Christ’s amazing love for us. We will be guided through the last hours of Christ’s

life. We will walk step-by-step with Jesus from the Garden of Gethsemane to Mount Cal-vary. Every step of the way, Old Testament

prophecies, messianic expectations, biblical sym-bolism, and historical context will shed light on the mystery of Christ’s suffering and death. In

this study we will discover the biblical back-ground to each scene in Christ’s Passion; what Jesus was going through at each moment; how

the Old Testament foretold Christ’s death; why Christ died for us; what was the meaning behind the tearing of the temple veil, the crowning with

thorns, and other events during Christ’s Pas-sion.

This will be given in English on Thursdays, 10:30am and repeated at 7:30 pm on Thursday,

February 27th, March 5, 12, 19, and 26. In Span-ish it will be on Monday at 10:30 am, March 2, 9, 23, 30, and April 6 and repeated on Saturday,

March 21, 7:00-9:00 , Monday, March 30, April 6 and 13. Both English and Spanish sessions will be in the Faith Formation Center.

With God’s Blessings, Sr. Alice Michael S.U.S.C
