In the New Year, Five Ways for Your Family to Help Humanity

By Fr. William Byrne, from the Catholic Standard

Pope Francis once said that the family is “necessary for the survival of humanity.” At each new year, we make resolutions for self-improvement. Perhaps this year we should resolve not only to make ourselves healthier but also to make our whole family holier, healthier and happier. In doing so, we can make humanity a bit better.

The 1st step is to write on December 31, 2015 in our new

calendars this question, “Is my family happier and holier than last year?” While you are at it, write the same question on the last day of each month to help keep your eyes on the prize. To help in this most worthwhile endeavor, I offer five family resolutions.

Pray – Does your family pray together other than at Mass and meals? If not, forget the next four resolutions and make this your prime goal. A rosary on a long car trip is a good start. How about a prayer request box? Family members can write intentions and put them in the box and before a meal or at bedtime, you can open the box, read the intentions and say a prayer for all the needs. If you’re stuck in traffic or get a flat tire, remind everyone to offer up their frustrations for the intentions in the family prayer box.

Play – It seems like the people I know with kids have their leisure time taken up with activities. What a shame if the only time you spend with your family is watching them play. Get a new board game, go for a hike at Great Falls or see who can skip the fastest on your way to school. I am not just talking about skipping with little ones, challenge your big kids, too. Did you know it is impossible to skip without smiling?

Dine – Don’t just have dinner, pick a night a week to dine. A Sunday supper is a good idea. Turn off devices and make sure homework is done already and have a fancy dinner. Take out the nicer plates, light some candles and create memories. Jesus gave us the Eucharist, our greatest gift ever, at a meal with those whom he loved. It doesn’t matter if it’s fancy food or pizza at your family dinner, what matters most is that you are savoring the experience.

Ask – Ask how your family members are doing. Don’t presume. Stop and listen to the answers. Ask for prayers. Ask for forgiveness. Ask and let them know you care about the answers.

Invite – Every once in a while invite the neighbors over to join you for a game, a meal and a prayer. Some might call it the New Evangelization, but I think it is just helping them also be holier and happier families, too. Remember, the survival of humanity depends on it!
