Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 17, 2019
The foundation of scripture is that God is faithful. However, during the second temple period
the promises of God had yet to be fulfilled. As it developed, Jewish apocalyptic eschatology
(pertaining to the end-times) resolved the disparity between the crisis of this evil age and those prom-
ises of God. The in-breaking of this new moment would be heralded by historical and cosmic catas-
trophes. The turning point would be “the day of the Lord,” a day of judgment and salvation. Today’s
Old Testament Reading from Malachi depicts the coming day of the Lord, at which the just will be
separated from the wicked. Elijah, a prophet like Moses, would come to announce this day of the
Lord.
The problem addressed in the second reading today is that some members of the community
believe that Malachi’s “day of the Lord” had already arrived, so they had simply stopped working.
The author describes their behavior as “disorderly” [“to evade responsibility” or “to be lazy”] and
uses himself as the proper example “in toil and drudgery, night and day we worked.” Evidently the
orderly way of life – even with the coming parousia was “to work quietly and to eat one’s own
food.” The question of the timing of the “day of the Lord” is today’s Gospel. Similar to the author of
Second Thessalonians, the Lucan Jesus warns the disciples not to listen to rumors, or to think that
wars and or insurrections signal the end. Before the apocalyptic scene will begin, there will persecu-
tions, “They will hand you over to the synagogue and to prisons . . . It will lead to your giving testi-
mony . . . and they will put some of your to death.” Luke attempts to explain the delay of the
parousia (which Paul has expected imme-
diately) by intro- ducing intermediate
stages of proclama- tion, testimony and mar-
tyrdom. [Living Liturgy Year C, World
Library Publica- tions]

Mother Teresa
“God’s Pencil”
I always say I am a little pencil in the hands of
God. He does the thinking. He does the writ-
ing. He does everything - and it’s really hard -
sometimes it’s a broken pencil. He has to
sharpen it a little more. But be a little instru-
ment in His hands so that He can use you any time, any-
where … We have only to say Yes to Him.
Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother
Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987)
Family Perspective
We are a short-term, results-oriented society. “Show
me the money!” “Cut your Losses” is advised if gains
are not in the near future. Today’s gospel warns us
that if we are not thinking long-term or if we react to
the latest crisis in the news, we will probably be led
astray. Jesus does not guarantee immediate gains in
the Christian life. “Stay invested in Him, especially
when others are anxious and you will be rewarded in
God’s time.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes By Angela Kovic
Director of Music and Liturgy
FUNERAL BLESSINGS
Like a weekend Mass, a funeral mass has the reading,
Eucharist, and general structure of Catholic worship, but
there are two parts added to specifically honor the deceased.
The first comes right before the beginning of the mass.
When the family and deceased arrive at the church, they are
met by the priest at the entrance of the Church. Here, the
priest will sprinkle the casket with holy water and a white
pal is placed on top by family and or friends. This is to rec-
ognize the person’s initiation into the church through Bap-
tism, and the pal symbolizes the white outfit that they would
wear during the sacrament.
The second addition to a funeral mass is called the Final
Commendation. This happens after the celebration of Com-
munion, and is the official ‘good bye’ to the soul of the de-
ceased. The body or cremains is incensed, and a song of
farewell is sung by everyone attending. The text is espe-
cially fitting as the incense rises up: ‘May the angels lead
you into paradise, may the martyrs welcome you and take
you to the holy city: the new and eternal Jerusalem.’ After
this family and friends will follow the deceased out of the
church and go on their way to the burial. The funeral mass is
a beautiful and reverent sending for our Christian brothers
and sisters to their next chapter, and can bring peace to
those who still remain on this earth.
Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to re-
hearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. If you are interested
in participating in choir, cantoring, or playing an instrument
during mass, please call or see Mrs. Angela Kovic after
mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number
