Celebrating 164 years of Pastoral Service to the Catholic Community of Berea
Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016
Dear Friends,
This weekend we celebrate and pray the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. Earlier in Luke’s Gospel Jesus outlined the demands of discipleship: one must abandon one’s previous life and family, recognize
the costs, and take up one’s cross. In today’s Gospel a couple of sayings of Jesus depict additional aspects of discipleship: increase our faith and their role as obedient servants. Jesus explains the desire for faith, as little or seed-like as it may be will the fullness of life AND he is countering the be-lief that obedient believers desire a reward. In Christ, the reward IS eternal life! This week, all the priests of the Diocese of Cleveland will be gathering at Sawmill Creek
Resort and Conference Center in Huron, Ohio on Tuesday, October 4th through Friday, October 7th for the bi-annual Presbyteral Convocation.
Here at St. Mary’s the 9:00am weekday masses have been canceled on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The Theme of the Presbyteral Convocation with Bishop Lennon is “RENEWING OUR PRIEST-HOOD AND EMBRACING OUR FUTURE” Please offer a prayer this week in support of our gathering to strengthen our mission as leaders and servants of the People of God!
Of course, if there is an emergency, the Parish Secretary and Staff WILL BE ABLE to be in contact with us! Peace and prayers for each one of you!
WELCOME all our CANDIDATES (students preparing to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation,
First Communion and Confirmation) at the 9:30am Mass this weekend. These students, now called CANDIDATES will be celebrating with
us on the first Sunday of each Month and will be Greeters, Ministers of the Word and participate in the Offertory Procession. We WELCOME our Candidates (their pictures are on the wall of the Mother Teresa vesti-bule) and ask that you pray for EACH of our Candidates as they enter into this sacramental journey this year!
THANKS for your ever faithful Sunday offering!
Peace!

How did the Father love us?
. . . Jesus has asked us to love one anoth-er again and again, as the Father has loved Him. And how did the Father love Him? By asking Him to sacrifice Himself through giving Him to die for us.

Bible Study As we finish our study of the Pastoral Epistles, we continue to focus on the need to have good leaders and to follow ap-propriate leadership. Come and see how you can relate these epistles to life in today’s world. No prior knowledge of scripture is needed as we open these stories together. Just bring your Bible and a listening heart.
Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel on Tuesday at12:30 with 20 minutes of quiet prayer and will be followed by a continuation of last week’s CD by Thomas Keating. Thom-as Keating is one of the foremost people in the country on Contemplative Prayer. All are welcome to join us. Come and see if this type of prayer might benefit you on your spir-itual journey?
12 Step Spirituality 12 Step Spirituality will meet this Thursday from 2:30p to 4:00pm in the chapel. We continue our study of the steps through the eyes of an AA personality and the focus of Thomas Keating. If your program could use a spiritual boost, join us for prayer and discussion.
Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes
By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy
GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS If I were to give this week’s readings, antiphons, and songs a theme, it would have to be of faith! Habakkuk sees de-struction and pain all around him, and yet he does not hear an answer from the Lord. St. Paul tells us to be faithful to Jesus Christ in our evangelizing. The Gospel is about being able to do the most incredible, impossible things with faith the size of a mustard seed. We are in the here and now; we cannot physically touch Jesus, we cannot yet recline with the saints and angels in heaven. We must have faith and believe in our Lord, and know that he is our rock. We need to stare right into our troubles, and still find it in us to sing for God! God will help us through the hard times; God will lead us home when our days are up. It is our obligation to live a life that reflects our devotion to our Lord. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27.

Family Perspectives
Christian families are willing to help others. The gospel today tells us not to gloat or feel pride in this. Rather, “we have done what we ought to have done.” The blessings we enjoy are meant to be shared with others. Be a blessing to others.
