FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 20/21, 2013

From your pastor . . . This Saturday, April 20th our parish will be hosting at the Richland Center Community Center a fundraiser that is named, “Sportsman’s Extravaganza.” This will be the fourteenth time that I have been involved in the organization and execution of this event. For the past thirteen years it was held in one of Colgan’s air hangers at the La Crosse airport and served as a fundraiser for Saint James Parish where I served as pastor. With the agree-ment of the present pastor of Saint James, I have brought the extravaganza to Richland Center for the fundraising of this par-ish. The heart of the fundraising is a raffle with only one prize – 40 acres of hunting land with tickets sold for $50 each. People sometimes believe that the land for the prize is a donation from someone but this is not true (I wish it was!) I purchase this land usually from a realtor and use a set of criteria for its suitability such as that it can be accessed by a public road; that it has elec-trical wires nearby so if the winner wants to build a structure they will have access to electricity; that it doesn’t cost too much; and that it has signs of game such as deer, bear, turkey and small game. As you may imagine, the drawing creates a fair amount of inter-est with those who purchase tickets and in years past a good num-ber of them have shown up to witness the drawing and to hope their ticket will be chosen. Observing this good size crowd, we decided to offer other raffles before the land raffle ticket is drawn with prizes such as guns, bows, scopes, binoculars, range finders, trail cameras, knives, camping equipment as well as a special raffle for the ladies who want to look their best when not in the woods (jewelry). I wish to comment on the guns that will be present as prizes. Needless to say, guns have been in the news recently and in many instances presented in a very dark and negative way. I wish to point out that the guns used for prizes at this event are sportsman style guns, not military assault style guns, neither are there any high capacity magazine clips that would hold for example up to ninety rounds of cartridges. Finally, all winners of guns must pass a federal background check before they are allowed to take the gun with them. We have a licensed gun dealer who calls in the name of each winner to verify that there are no irregularities in his or her background that would prevent them from owning a firearm. I bring these matters to your attention so that if after the event you hear it said that our parish hosted a “gun show” or was in-volved in “selling guns,” you will know the truth of the matter and can correct any misperceptions. Over the years this has been a very enjoyable evening with peo-ple coming from Minnesota, Illinois and even Michigan. I hope that we will have a fun and successful evening. The money that will be raised at the Extravaganza will be put toward our parish construction projects. Until I write again, may God bless you and all the parishioners of Saint Mary Parish. (Very Rev.) Roger J. Scheckel

CRS Rice Bowl Campaign / Mite Boxes: Rice Bowls and mite boxes will be collected over the next few weeks. They can be placed in the large collection containers near the entrances to the church. Students may also take their mite boxes to the school. All the money is then for-warded to the Diocese. The Rice Bowl money will be sent to CSR and the student mite box money goes to help children in Bolivia.

Scrip News: Next weekend’s 10:30 Mass will be First Commun-ion. There will be NO Scrip sales following that Mass only. Scrip sales after the other Masses will be as usual. Don’t forget to buy Scrip BEFORE you head out to buy your bedding plants and yard and garden supplies. Many cards avail-able for immediate purchase for our local merchants!

Mass Inaugurating Fr. Joseph Walijewski’s Cause for Beatification and Canoni-zation: On Wednesday, May 1, Bishop William P. Callahan will formally inaugu-rate the Cause for Beatification and Canonization of Fr. Joseph Walijewski, a priest of the Diocese of La Crosse. Since the opening of the cause on March 19th, a Tribunal has been established that will carry out the investigation. During the Mass, each Tribunal member will take an individual oath in front of Bishop Callahan as a sign of their integrity. The work of the Tribunal is to conduct the investigation into the life of the Servant of God, Father Joseph Walijewski, and to prepare all nec-essary documentation for its presentation to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The Mass will begin at 12:10 p.m. on May 1 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse, WI. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and pray for the success of the work of this effort. For more information, please visit www.frjoesguild.org. Fr. Walijewski, during his missionary work, started Holy Cross Parish in Santa Cruz, Bolivia in 1956; built a church in a barrio of Lima, Peru in 1971; and started Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II (The House of John Paul II) Orphanage in Lima, Peru in 1987. When not in South America, he served as an assistant pastor at St. Paul Parish in Mosinee and at St. Peter Parish in Stevens Point. He was also the assistant pastor and, during a later period, the pastor of St. Hedwig Parish in Thorp.

Construction Updates! Please take note: • Construction of the elevator is nearly complete. The elevator will

not be available for use until after the State of Wisconsin inspec-tion has been completed. The inspection cannot be scheduled until the elevator has been totally completed so be aware that there may be a lag between the time the elevator “looks done” and when it will be available for public use.

• Well drilling for the geo-thermal system is now complete. • Excavation for the school additions has begun - please be aware

that this will affect the parking lot - those who can park farther from the church should do so to leave space closer to the church for those who are not able to walk quite as far.

• The Cry Room will be closed until the elevator project is complete. • Please understand that the dust, noise, and schedule changes due to

the construction will be temporary as we work to complete the improvements to our church, school building, and parking lot.

• Be sure to watch the bulletin for updates - we will do our best to inform you of schedule changes in advance, but understand that not all eventualities may be known in time to publish in the bulletin - your understanding and cooperation is appreciated.
