FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! Basketball games between a Catholic and a public school are usually quite entertaining. When Central used to play Aquinas, the students would chant things back and forth. My favorite cheer was when the public school kids yelled “evolution”, thus implying that Catholics don’t believe in such things. However, we do believe in evolution – Pope John Paul II said once that it’s “more than a hypothesis.” Just the same, unlike the hardcore Darwinists of the world, we do not claim that evolution explains everything. For example, evolution cannot explain the beginning of life, nor human consciousness or rationality. So, while Catholics certainly subscribe to the truths taught by science, we are cautious when people claim that we no longer need religion because science and technology meet all of our needs. Sadly, ever since Galileo there has been the suspicion that science and religion are at odds and no longer have anything in common. If people would just take some time to reflect on the fact that many of the greatest scientists were men and women of faith, people like Copernicus, Kepler, Brahe, Boyle, Leibniz, Pascal, Lyell, Kelvin, Ohm, Steno, Planck, and Mendel, just to name a few. I’m reminded of the story of the old man who was riding a train near Paris nearly one hundred years ago. He was praying his rosary when a young college kid got on and sat down near him. The kid scoffed at the superstitious old man and castigated him, “why are you wasting your time with that medieval nonsense? You should try science – that’s where you’ll find all the answers.” The old man lowered his head and began to cry, stating that he had tried science and found it to be wanting in its ability to explain many of life’s mysteries. The college kid felt bad so he asked the old man to give him his address and he would send him some science books that would help him out. The old man fished around in his coat for a business card and when he handed it to the student, it was his turn to drop his head, as he saw the name on the card: Louis Pasteur, Doctor of Applied Science. Pasteur found no disconnect between his faith and his scientific career – he died while praying the rosary and listening to the life of St. Vincent de Paul, which was read to him by a friend. In this year of faith, it’s important for us to examine our biases, because the thesis of secularism is based on discrediting religion while simultaneously elevating science. Catholics believe in both, but we know in the end our faith explains things science will never be able to address, things like our origin and final end, our purpose and inherent dignity. Yes, we believe in evolution, but only insofar as God is the Creator of all that exists. He alone can answer the deeper questions in our hearts and minds, a truth that Pasteur and many like him have come to believe. May God deepen your faith and your love for Him! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

Prayer Corner: To encourage a deeper celebration of this Year of Faith, I will be running a different prayer in this corner each month. You're very welcome to cut it out and commit it to memory or just put it on your refrigerator or bathroom mirror. This idea surfaced from our education committee and I think it is a good one. Please pray for me while you're at it!

ANIMA CHRISTI Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O Good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds, hide me. Suffer me not to be separated from Thee. From the malignant enemy, defend me. In the hour of my death, call me, and bid me come to Thee. That with Thy saints, I may praise Thee.

Forever and ever. Amen
