Public Policy Issues

From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

Health and Human Services Health Care Mandate“The HHS has issued a ruling forcing nearly all private health plans to include coverage for all FDA-approved prescrip-tion contraceptive drugs and devices, including those that can cause chemical abortion, as well as surgical sterilization. All health plans will be forced to cover these items without co-pays or other cost-sharing – regardless of whether the insur-er, the employer or other plan sponsor, or even the woman herself objects to such coverage. Learn “Six More Things Every-one Should Know about the HHS Man-date” at www.USCCB.org by clicking the link under ‘Renewed Action Alert’.”

A clarification: There is an exemption from the above mandate for churches, as such. This exemption extends to dioceses, parishes, and probably Catholic elemen-tary and secondary schools. However, the exemption does not extend to other Church-related institutions, such as Cath-olic hospitals, colleges, and charities. This is the core of our Church’s objection to the HHS mandate.

From the Maryland Catholic Conference:

Marriage BillThe current legislative session of the Maryland Legislature has approved what is commonly known as the same-sex mar-riage bill. This law would extend the defi-nition of marriage to couples of the same sex. Efforts are already underway to peti-tion this newly passed law to referendum so that it would be on the November bal-lot. More information will be forthcom-ing on that. Meanwhile, find out what the Catholic Church teaches about mar-riage and why it’s important. Visit the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website at www.marriageuniqueforareason.org or Maryland Catholic Conference’s website at www.mdcathcon.org to learn about marriage as the foundation of family and society.

From Father Mike Dear Friends,

Most Reverend Ed-win F. O’Brien, who has been our Arch-bishop since 2007, was made a Cardi-nal of the Church on Saturday, Febru-

ary 18. Saint Margaret Parish joined with the other 10 parishes of the Harford Re-gion in congratulating Cardinal O’Brien with a half-page ad in the February 23 issue of The Catholic Review.

Cardinal O’Brien was born in Bronx, New York in 1939. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of New York in 1965. He served as civilian chaplain at the United States Military Academy in West Point and later became an Army chaplain with the rank of captain. He then served a tour of duty in Vietnam. After leaving the military, Father eventu-ally Monsignor O’Brien served in various capacities for the Archdiocese of New York, including Rector of Saint Joseph’s Seminary for eight years. Monsignor O’Brien also served as Rector of the North American College in Rome from 1990 to 1994.

Monsignor O’Brien became an aux-iliary bishop of New York in 1996 and in 1997 became Archbishop for the Military Services. In that role, he was responsible for the pastoral care of Catholics in the United States military throughout the world. The Archbishop once shared with me that, though based in Washington, D.C., he was travelling to different military installations around the world about 60% of the time. He held this position until Pope Benedict XVI ap-pointed him Archbishop of Baltimore.

In his four years in Baltimore, Arch-bishop O’Brien focused especially on vocations to the priesthood, respect for human life, and Catholic schools. He formed a Blue Ribbon Committee that called for significant changes in the organization and structure of Catholic

schools. Those recommendations are in the process of being implemented.

This past August, Pope Benedict an-nounced the appointment of Arch-bishop O’Brien as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher. To most of us, that sounds like a very strange title and group and it needs some explanation. This Order, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher, dates back to the time of the crusades in the eleventh century. Apparently the members, who were knights, were origi-nally involved in the crusades and in actu-al fighting to recapture or retain the Holy Land. By the 15th century, the Pope had created the role of Grand Master as the head of this order and the practice de-veloped of elevating this bishop to the rank of Cardinal. Today the role of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher is to assist the Christians who live in the Holy Land. They comprise a very small minority. There are 18,000 members of this Order worldwide and they contribute or raise considerable money each year to assist with hospitals, orphanages, schools, and other projects sponsored by the Christians in the Holy Land, especially in Jerusalem. Cardinal O’Brien will be re-sponsible for leading these efforts.

Pope Benedict, when naming Cardi-nal O’Brien to this new position, also appointed him as Apostolic Admin-istrator of the Archdiocese of Balti-more. Technically, he ceased being our Archbishop when the new appointment was made. This is why, in the Eucharistic Prayer, we have been praying for “Edwin, our Apostolic Administrator.” Cardinal O’Brien has been dividing his time be-tween both positions in recent months and will remain Apostolic Administrator here until a new Archbishop is appoint-ed. The word is that this should happen quite soon. We are grateful for the Car-dinal’s leadership in these years and pray for his good health and for the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon him in his new assignment. Father Mike

Volunteer OpportunitiesHere are ways to put your Lenten spiritual progress into action:

Cinderella’s Closet This is a fundraiser involving glitz and glamour! We sell gently used special occasion dresses to benefit

needy children in Harford County. We are ex-panding to become our own signature event! Our next meeting is March 14 at 9:15 am in the Parish Office Conference Room.

Sandwich MinistryOne individual has volunteered to serve as driver to deliver sandwich bags

to area homeless. If another individual would come forward, it would certainly help in shar-ing this responsibility and lighten the commit-ment for all. You can shadow someone and receive training. We would need you from 10:30 am - noon on the 3rd Sunday of each month. With your help, you would only need to drive every other month.

Hospital/Home Eucharistic MinistersWe have had some individuals come forward to help, but we could always use more! You can receive training and shadowing before going on your own. As little as one hour a month would be a great help!

Ministry of Consolation “Life After Loss”Support group meets every Tuesday at 11:00 am in the Adult Education Center Library. If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, please consider attending. If you have the energy, take a walk today through a quiet area of town. Contem-plate the ways in which you might take better care of yourself in the coming weeks and months.

FCCAU Bingo Come support our local homeless shelter by at-tending their Vera Bradley/Longaberger Basket Bingo on March 30 at Saint Mary Magdalen Mission. Doors open at 6:30 pm and tickets cost $15. Outreach Office has 20 tickets on hold for this event. If interested in attending, contact Jane O’Hara in the Parish office.

Liturgy CornerFasting on words.During Lent, in a sense, we fast from sing-ing “Alleluia” or the “Gloria.” We do this not because we have nothing to rejoice in. It would be impossible to ignore the greatness of God that surrounds us ev-ery day. However, just as Christ retreated to the desert for 40 days, so too does the Church ask her members to do the same during Lent. In this time of desert retreat, we remove everything but the essentials so we can better prepare ourselves. This preparation is not just leading to Easter. It is also a time in which we as a commu-nity prepare to welcome our candidates and catechumens into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Therefore, may this fasting, both in word and deed, make us a holy people, to rejoice and welcome our new-est members this Easter.

Triduum 2012 - Available now at Best Buy . . .“Triduum.” It sounds like a video game, doesn’t it? While you may not be shooting bad guys or questing for hidden kingdoms, Tridu-um is an annual adventure we all can go on.

What is the Easter Triduum? What does the Church ask of us during these three holy days? What difference does it make if we do these things or not? Come at our next meet-ing of Keeping the Faith, Thursday, March 15 at 7:00 pm in the AEC and learn how and why the Church celebrates Good Friday through Easter Sunday. We’ll discuss how these prac-tices bring us closer to our Lord - and even learn some interesting Triduum trivia!

Keeping the Faith meets every first and third Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Adult Education Center. We travel in-depth into Catholic topics that you may have missed and help you to understand and be able to explain them. New members are always welcome, so if you’re interested, give Marie Dekowski a call at 410-879-2670, ext. 126 or e-mail her at [email protected].

Free Tax PreparationThe AARP, in conjunction with the IRS and Harford County Tax-Aide Program provides this service and e-filing of federal and Mary-land state income tax returns for low-to-mid-dle-income taxpayers of any age. To schedule an appointment with an IRS-certified volun-teer, call 410-638-3425 Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:30 pm.

They can be any size from infant to teen, and they do not have to be expensive! Middle school stu-dents will be participating in several activi-ties during the month to support this effort. A group of middle school students will be delivering the collected items to this com-munity as part of a “mini-mission” trip. If you can help with this cause, your donation will be accepted at the school office.
