Apolytikion of the Day (Grave Tone)

By means of Your Cross, O Lord You abolished death. To the robber You opened Paradise. The lamentation of the Myrrh-bearing women You transformed and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all that You had risen from the dead, our God, and granted the world Your great mercy.

Apolytikion of Saint Katherine the Great Martyr (1st Plagios Tone) Την πανεύφημον νύμφην Χριστού υμνήσωμεν, Αικατερίναν την θείαν και πολιούχον Σινά, την βοήθειαν ημών και αντίληψιν, ότι εφίμωσε λαμπρώς, τους κομψούς των ασεβών, του Πνεύματος την δυνάμει. Και ως μάρτυς του Κυρίου στεφθείσα, αιτείται πάσι, το μέγα έλεος.

The all-blessed bride of Christ let us extol in song, Katherine the divine and protectress of Sinai, the assistance and helper of all of us; for she muzzled brilliantly, the ungodly clever men, by the power of the Spirit. And now crowned as Martyr, she pleads great mercy for all of us.

Kontakion of the Day (Grave Tone) Επί του όρους μετεμορφώθης, και ως εχώρουν οι Μαθηταί σου, την δόξαν σου Χριστέ ο Θεός εθεάσαντο, ίνα όταν σε ίδωσι σταυρούμενον, το μεν πάθος νοήσωσιν εκούσιον, τω δε κόσμω κηρύξωσιν, ότι συ υπάρχεις αληθώς, του Πατρός το απαύγασμα.

Upon the mount you were transfigured, and your Disciples beheld your glory, as far as they were able, O Christ our God; so that when they would see you being crucified, they would know that you suffered willingly; and thus proclaim to all the world, that you are truly the one, who is the Father’s radiance.

Epistle Reading The Lord will give strength to his people.

Bring to the Lord, O Son of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory. The reading is from Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.

1st Corinthians 1:10-17 – Brethren, I appeal to you, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarrelling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius; lest anyone should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Gospel Reading Matthew 14:14-22 – At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send he crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOYA – The Annunciation, Baltimore GOYA’s Indoor Lacrosse Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 4, starting at 1:00 p.m. at Saints Constantine and Helen Church in Annapolis. They are asking for children’s sizes 5-6-7 male and female. The shoes should be gym/sneakers/tennis shoes. There will be a special bin in the foyer of our community center. The shoes will be distributed to children in the Washington DC area. For many children this will be their first pair of new shoes. Thank you for your generosity.

Clothing and Toiletries – We continue to collect new and used clothing and unopened toiletries for the Shelter. Although winter is over, they are still collecting warm clothing, coats, scarves, gloves, etc. They will store them for next winter. And there is always a need for adult shoes of every kind for men and women. Dress shoes, casual shoes, and new shoes and used shoes in good condition. Please give what you can. Bring your items to our community center and we will deliver to the shelter once a week. Thanks to all who have contributed in the past.

Offertory Prayer – O God, as you welcomed the gifts of Abel, the sacrifices of Noah and Abraham, the incense of Aaron and Zachariah, do welcome also, from the hands of us sinners, these offerings, so that in clear conscience we may always offer to you gifts and the resources of our labor, for your glorification, for the alleviation of sufferings and hunger, for the ministry to your people, by the grace, mercy and philanthropy of your only begotten Son with whom You are blessed from ages to ages. Amen.
