Refresh-ments will be served. For questions, call St. Denis parishioner, Carol Deacon, 223-6724.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 5, 2015 “As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ances-tors have revolted against me to this very day. Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you…they shall know that a prophet has been among them.”… “A prophet is not without honor except in his na-tive place.” We receive information from countless sources – internet, texts, twitter, TV, radio. We are most receptive to positive, pleasing news, things which make us feel good and uplifted. Sometimes we receive the results of a medical test, reports on a condition, that is neither reassuring or satisfying. But the information is important, so that a condition may be addressed. Ezekiel had a unique responsibility to ‘tell it like it is.’ He knew those to whom he was sent were hard and rebellious. He had a mission. A prophet in scripture is a spokesperson for God. Ezekiel called his people back to the Lord. Jesus’ hometown people took offense at His teaching. They didn’t want to hear the challenge He proposed. The church today needs prophetic voices. Pope Francis’ mes-sages are pleasing to most, yet he corrects and directs. Archbishop Romero’s voice was silenced by an assassin’s bullet. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, spoke through kindness and compassion. May we all learn to hear and listen to the voice of God di-recting us through the Spirit.

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Ezekiel 2:2-5 Ezekiel is moved to respond to the call of God and to accen-tuate his teaching with a direct reference to the Word of God. Second Reading: II Corinthians 12:7-10 Paul had questioned the value of his suffering, and God re-plied, “My grace is enough for you, for strength is made per-fect in weakness.” Paul then realized that although he was weak against persecution, he was strong in faith. Gospel: Mark 6:1-6a Jesus could do little for those in his own part of the country, for their lack of faith in him was so great. Therefore, he spent much of his time teaching in neighboring villages instead. © 1999 Bon Venture Services, Inc
