SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FIRST COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION

Under the Directives of the Arch-diocese, we are now able to celebrate the sacraments that were postponed due to the Coronavirus. Emails have been sent to all those who prepared to receive First Holy Communion and Confirmation this year. If your child is registered, please be sure to check your email for the details. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Arlene Kennedy at [email protected]

Nick Besink, a Saint Joseph parishioner, is the station manager for OPTV, as well as a broadcast consultant. A three-time Emmy-winning video engineer (for his work on The View), Nick was the engineer in charge of Thirteen/WNET’s main studio for over 25 years (working on such programs as The Big Band Years, Theater in America, The Adams Chronicles and the MacNeil/Lehrer Report), and was senior video engi-neer for the Disney/ABC Television Group for over 17 years.

Glenn Schneider, who has been filming and editing our Sunday Masses, is both a parishioner of Saint Joseph Church and a graduate of Saint Joseph School. A freelance camera operator, audio tech, director and editor in the NYC area, Glenn holds a BA in Fine Arts/Photography and has worked in video production since 1993. (See glennschneiderstudios.com) Glenn also works on all home Yankees Baseball & NYCFC soccer games for the Yankee Stadium scoreboard, as well as concerts, movie junkets, awards shows, webcasts, charity dinners & special events.

OUR SINCERE THANK YOU TO TWO VERY SPECIAL PARISHIONERS Saint Joseph Parish is very blessed to have parishioners who are willing to give so generously of their time and talent to help further the mission of our church. One of them, Glenn Schneider (see above) came to our rescue just as we were forced to close our doors in March because of the pandemic. Since then Glenn has donated countless hours to film and edit all 21 of our Sunday Masses and Holy Week services since then. Because of Glenn’s amazing talent and willingness to help, we were able to offer our Sunday Mass online without missing a single week. Glenn, we are deeply indebted to you. Thank you for all you have done for our church. Glenn must return to his other projects now, but Saint Joseph plans to continue to offer Sunday Mass online. Go to our parish website at sjcnj.org for more information about upcoming Sunday Masses. Another parishioner we would like to thank is Nick Besink (see below). With Nick’s help we were able to have our Sunday Masses broadcast on Oradell Public Television (OPTV—see below right). Saint Joseph Church is very grateful to Nick and to the Mayor and Council of Oradell for this continuing opportunity.

Fr. Anthony (left) and Fr. John (below) have been conducting preparation interviews with our Confirmation candidates outdoors in the Grotto next to our church. Saint Joseph’s celebration of the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist will take place in August.

OPTV (Oradell Public TV) is a Public, Educational, and Governmental (PEG) cable station carried on Cablevision Channel 77 (in Oradell) and Verizon Channel 28 (in Oradell and New Milford). Mass from Saint Joseph will continue to be broadcast on OPTV on Sundays at 10:00 am.

FROM THE DESK OF FR. ANTHONY

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 26, 2020

Visit us on our websites: CHURCH: sjcnj.org

SCHOOL: sjsusa.org RELIGIOUS ED.: sjcnjre.org

Fr. Anthony Di Stefano, parochial vicar of Saint Joseph Church, is our guest columnist this week.

Monsignor Hubba’s column, “From the Pastor’s Desk,” will return August 16.

British writer C.S. Lewis entitled his only autobiographical work Surprised by Joy. The title was in tribute to his wife, Joy Gresham, whom Lewis, a confirmed bachelor most of his life, married in 1956, when he was fifty-eight.

Both of the individuals in today’s Gospel you might say were “surprised by joy.” In this way, the laborer discovering buried treasure and the merchant finding a pearl of great price, were alike. In other respects, the two individuals were quite different.

The first is a day laborer, plowing his employer’s field and catches on what he at first takes as a rock. Further investigation reveals it to be a pottery jar filled with gold and silver coins. He realizes that this unexpected find can change his life; giving him the financial security he has never known.

But he also realizes he has a problem. The law of the day said that buried treasure belonged to the person on whose property it was found. Rather than carrying off the treasure at once, the man carefully buries the jar again and finishes his day’s work. Later, he makes his employer an offer for the field. When his offer is accepted, the man is overjoyed. The purchase has cost everything; however, the treasure now his, is worth far more.

The second, a merchant, is different. He is looking for treasure. Years of buying and selling have sharpened his eye and refined his taste. One day, walking through

the bazaar, he sees a pearl so large and flawless, that it takes his breath away. Buying it will mean the sacrifice of all he owns. But no matter, because, when you

have found perfection, no price is too high to pay.

Jesus is saying, “God’s kingdom is like that!” Neither of these two individuals thinks for a minute of the sacrifice being made. Both think of the joy of their new possession.

Must we pay a price to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ? Of course! Sometimes that price is high. But

(continued above)

when we think only of the cost of discipleship, we make our religion, our faith, grim and forbidding. In these two little parables, Jesus is emphasizing, not the cost, but the infinitely greater reward!

Like the great chorus of Christian disciples who, just as these two individuals, have been “surprised by joy,” the words Saint Augustine in his Confessions come to mind:

“How sweet did it become to me all at once to be without those trifles! What I previously feared to lose, it was now with joy to be without. For you cast them away from me, you true and highest sweetness. You cast them out and entered in yourself. Sweeter than all pleasure.”

All through his twenties, the intellectually brilliant Augustine wanted to be a Christian. But he was unable to give up his life of indulgence. After God granted him the grace of conversion, Augustine spoke of what had been sacrificed for Jesus Christ was nothing compared to the treasure he had gained.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we know that discipleship can have its costs. But we equally know also that it brings JOY!

The Surprising JOY of Christian Discipleship

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28 Do you really trust God? Do you really believe that God will

provide all that you need? Faith is a challenge for everyone at times. Putting our trust in God, in everything we do, in good times and in bad, means that God’s plan for our lives may be quite different than what we planned. When one door closes, another one opens. Trust in God—His plan is always better.
