TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 19, 2018

FROM THE DESK OF DEACON GEORGE MONTALVO

DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Today’s education is centered on the student not as a passive recipient but as

an active one. It also emphasizes the importance of a parent’s role in helping children to develop other social skills that are only learned at home. Every book I have read in Religious Education is built on the premise of the Baptismal promise parents took upon the day of their child’s baptism; parents promised to help them grow in the faith of the Catholic Church. When I have celebrated baptisms in my ministry as Deacon, I always remind parents of the importance of three things. Teach the faith to your children, not only by words but especially by actions. It is never too early to begin talking to your children about God. The true value of faith in the life of a person is first learned at an early age and in the mist of family. Talking about God, our Mother Mary, praying before meals, and the Rosary are some examples of teaching the faith. Even more important is when families attend Mass together, and children begin to learn the beauty of this great celebration. There is no greater gift that the one that we received at Baptism. The Sacrament of Baptism, makes us part of the Church but overall, at that moment, we become adoptive sons and daughters of God. Therefore, after baptism, these children who were just baptized are now not only their own children, but also sons and daughters of God, and they deserve to be brought up as such. The goal for Christian parents is to teach their children the way back home: Heaven. I encourage them to get actively involved in the life of their parish. Witness to the Love of God. A couple’s love as husband and wife is the closest thing to the Love of God—Love that is full of forgiveness, faithfulness, patience, communication, etc.; a relationship that is built day by day knowing that God is among them to help in their good as well as in the bad times. The third way to fulfill your baptismal promise is to enroll your children in the Parish Religious Education Program, where they will learn the basics of our Catholic faith and some of our traditions. However, it is only an illusion that simply by attending religious education classes once a week our children’s faith will increase or it will be sufficient. Without parent participation and encouragement, it becomes just knowledge. Faith needs to be practiced as a family enabling children to accept it as their own in the future. Remember, if faith for you is important, it will be important for your children. Practice makes perfect.

Have a great rest of the summer! Deacon George

WE ARE LOOKING FOR NEW ALTAR SERVERS!

Altar Servers perform a very important and much needed role of assisting in liturgical services so that the presider can focus on leading all present through word, prayer and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Any child wishing to become an altar server must have already received First Holy Communion and be at least in the 4th grade. (This is a new eligible age for junior altar servers at Saint Joseph.) More information on training for altar servers will be announced soon and details will be provided on our parish website. If your child is interested in learning more about becoming an altar server, or if you have any questions about the ministry yourself, please contact Fr. Anthony at [email protected] or call 201-261-0148 ext. 13.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP

SEPTEMBER 7—OCTOBER 19 When grieving the loss of a loved one, individuals may feel overwhelmed and lonely. Adapting to life after the

death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Saint Joseph Parish offers a Bereavement Support Group led by Sister Josefina Morales and team for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Anyone interested, including parishioners from other churches, are welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 7 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from September 7—October 19 in the Parish Life Center (268 Grove St, Oradell, NJ—behind the lower school building), If you would like to participate or if you need more information, please contact our parish secretary Gerry at 201-261-0148.

—NEXT WEEKEND, AUGUST 25-26 Saint Joseph will host a visiting missionary next weekend in cooperation with the Society of the Propagation of the Faith (a member of the Pontifical Mission Societies). The Propagation of the Faith is an international association coordinating assistance for Catholic missionary priests, brothers, and nuns in mission areas around the world. Come hear about the work being done by these dedicated missionaries to spread the Gospel and to assist those in need. Please be as generous as you can in support of their efforts.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve… As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who invests time in prayer every day, joyfully participates in charitable works and generously supports the parish and Church mission. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it!
