STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” LUKE 13:30 Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.

TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 21, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

See our bulletin in FULL COLOR at sjcnj.org

I’ve never written about my vacation before, and have never brought it into my preaching either.

But since I had to write about something this week, I’m going to break that habit just this once. Besides enjoying the company of some friends, I made three visits to Pennsylvania, which used to greet visitors with signs at its tourist information centers that said, “America begins here”—which I always thought was a strange choice of words welcoming visitors from New Jersey. Thankfully, they have dropped that slogan, and I’m still puzzled about why they adopted it in the first place. Pennsylvania has a wealth of museums, and I got to visit a large one and a small one, both of them very enjoyable. At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where a person can easily spend a week, I finally got to see Henry Ossawa Tanner’s The Annunciation, a wonderful painting that portrays Mary in as authentic a way of depicting a young woman of the Near East as the artist could create. She sits on her bed, startled at the Archangel’s appearance, which takes the form of a beam of light at the opposite end of her room. Our Jackson Room, in the upper part of Mary’s Chapel, has a copy of this beautiful picture, if you would like to see it. I also went to the much smaller James A. Michener Museum in Doylestown, which has a generous selection of paintings by the Pennsylvania Impressionists, including the colorful works of Fern Coppedge. I also spent several days in Scranton. Instead of complying with the suggestion of the Lackawanna County Visitors Guide (“Test your personal limits through skilled activities such as whitewater rafting and rock climbing”), I spent two full days at the University of Scranton’s beautiful library and the rest of my time wandering around, pretty much escaping the notice of the locals, many of whom were preoccupied with the Poke mon game. (I still don’t know exactly what it is, but I know it’s important.) At the library, I read a book I have long sought to encounter, Helen Waddell’s The Wandering Scholars, which tells of learned men of the so-called Dark Ages and of the early Middle Ages who strongly influenced Europe. Some of them are well known, such as Boethius, who wrote The Consolation of Philosophy, which tried to soothe troubled people by advising them to

Look to the highest of the heights of heaven, See where the stars sill keep their ancient peace.

Another notable was Alcuin, the Englishman who established a famous school at the court of Charlemagne and so motivated him to love learning that the Emperor slept with a slate under his pillow so he could sit up to (continued above)

make his letters in the middle of the night. Alcuin once described heaven as

The happy house where friend from friend divides not, And what he loves, he hath for evermore.

And Waddell doesn’t neglect disappointed forgotten scholars, such as Peter of Blois, who, she writes, “as for his own works, … modestly concludes that they will outlast ruin and flood and fire and the manifold procession of the centuries.” Since a person needs to eat, I tried a variety of places. One was Denny’s, which at first made me a little nervous, because it had a sign that said, “Please see the hostess to be seated.” Since both a woman and a man were handling this task, I worried about what I would do if the man took charge of me, but I drew the woman. Unable to resist a good pun, I ordered a ham-and-egg breakfast sandwich called “Moons Over My Hammy,” which was delicious. While waiting for it to arrive there wasn’t much to read except the menu, which had a notice for a new pancake item that promised a fluffier version of the old favorite. The ad said: “For the complete new pancake experience, just scan this QR code with your smartphone or visit dennys.com.” I would have supposed that the complete experience would have involved actually tasting the pancake, but I guess I was wrong. On my way back to New Jersey, I stopped to eat at another place. After finishing my hamburger, I thought a trip to the men’s room was advisable. The sign over the sink said, “Employees must wash hands.” Since I wanted to get back on the road without delay, I only waited a short time for the employee to show up before deciding I’d wash my own hands, rules or no rules. Driving through Sussex County on Route 209 near Culver Lake, I saw a place intriguingly named the Jumboland Diner. But since I’d just had my lunch, I’ll have to try to remember it for next year.

HAPPY 20th ANNIVERSARY, PETER GRECO!

Twenty years ago this Thursday, Saint Joseph music minister Peter Greco played and sang for the very first time at Saint Joseph Church. Since then we have been

blessed to have him and his extraordinary talents at our church for two decades. And Peter continues to serve the Lord and our parish community enriching our liturgies as part of the wonderful trio (Peter on piano, Monroe Quinn on guitar and Rich Leavy on drums) that plays at our 12:00 Sunday Mass; enhancing our devotions by playing weekly at our Miraculous Medal Novena and other prayer services; lifting our spirits when called upon to play at weddings, funerals and other sacrament celebrations; and entertaining us at concerts and parish parties (in particular with his virtuoso piano playing at our annual “Afternoon of Christmas Joy”). Peter’s gifts are truly remarkable. He is a self-taught musician who plays 13 instruments entirely by ear. Besides being a professional musician, he is also an accomplished singer. Peter is very generous with his talents: he works with the Saint Joseph School kindergarteners every year and accompanies them at their “graduation.” Thank you, Peter, for sharing your amazing talent and your generous spirit with Saint Joseph Parish. Here’s to many more years together!

NEW OFFERINGS FOR BIBLE STUDY ON-LINE STUDY

This academic school year, our parish will be offering a Bible Study that will fit into everyone's schedule. For the first time, we will be offering a Bible Study that can be done on your own at home. This eight-part study provides the easiest way to understand the Bible. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple. It helps you uncover the story woven throughout Scripture so that you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand what it is all about. There is minimal 'homework' and each session includes a 30 minute DVD lesson. Everyone can benefit from this study, but parents of school-aged children are particularly encouraged to participate in order to help with their children’s religious education.

TRADITIONAL WEEKLY GROUP SESSIONS Our Newest Study is called Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John (8 weeks). Others studies for this year include Acts of the Apostles (20 weeks), James (10 weeks), and A Biblical Walk through the Mass (5 weeks). All studies meet weekly for 90 minutes on the parish grounds (Parish Life Center or Jackson Room).

HOW TO SIGN UP Sign-up for all bible studies, including the new on-line study, as well as the more traditional weekly studies, will take place NEXT WEEKEND August 27-28, in the Harrison Street lobby of the Church. Study guide costs range from $20-30. To find out more about this parish-based Bible Study Program, please visit ascension-press.com or contact Pat Fakharzadeh at 201-599-2123 or email her at [email protected]

RAINBOWS FOR ALL CHILDREN GUIDING KIDS THROUGH LIFE’S STORMS Our Lady of the Visitation Parish,

Paramus, will once again offer the Rainbows Program, a weekly support group for children, first through eighth grades, who are living in single-parent homes, or have families that are going through painful transitions. When something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies or a divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve, but the children do also. Because of their age and short life experience children find it extremely difficult to verbalize those feelings. The program is free to any child who needs us. Sessions begin on October 4, 2016 at 7:00 pm. To facilitate the book order we will need families to register as soon as possible. To register or for more information, contact: Barbara D’Arrigo, Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation, Our Lady of the Visitation, Paramus at 201-265-3812 or at [email protected]
