Dear Parishioners,

Well, I’m back from New Orleans. It was a very pleasant trip, except for the

travel to and from. It’s just no fun flying anymore. Actually, it hasn’t been

fun for almost two decades.

But now, I’m an invested Chaplain in the Military and Hospitaller Order of

St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem was founded

after the First Crusade in 1099 at a leper hospital in Jerusalem, whose care became

its original purpose, named after their patron saint, Lazarus. It has a long and

varied history which is quite fascinating. I suggest you go to st-lazarus.net and

look around. I was invested with several laymen and another priest in the presence

of The Princess of France, Her Royal Highness Clothilde d’Orléans.

New Orleans is quite a place. The weather was great, though a bit warm for me (no

news there, right?). The food was fabulous. Of course, the tourists were “legion.”

And, of course, I took a short walk on Bourbon St., just to be able to say I’d done

it. Well, as Bette Davis said in the film, Beyond the Forest, “WHAT A DUMP!”

And that’s an understatement. Filth, garbage, trash (both inanimate and, depending

on the time of day, human) fill the street and its gutters. You’d better believe I

limited my walk to only a few blocks – and in the light of day. No power would

get me there after sundown.

On my last day, I managed to stay at the cathedral rectory. Hotels are nice, of

course, but quite expensive. The cathedral rectory was quite impressive and the

cathedral itself is just beautiful. It is the oldest cathedral in continual use in

America. As such, it goes without saying that it’s an historical landmark.

Mercifully, this distinction saved it from the rampant “wreckovation” so prevalent

in the late 60s through the early 80s. There is only minimal disfigurement, I’m

happy to say. I’d be willing to bet that with about $10 to $20K, it could be returned

to its original condition. Thank God the cathedral organ in is pristine shape, its

constant maintenance and care being underwritten by a former, famous organist.

A propos renovation, or better, restoration, our church beautification project is, as

you can see, in its beginning stages. All of the sanctuary drywall has been replaced

in preparation for the elaborate “facelift” involving various colors of paint,

texturing, accents and applications of gold-leaf. When that is finished or, let’s say,

even if the painting isn’t completely finished, when feasible, the new reredos

extension, pulpit and adoring angels will find their new home in what ultimately

will be a sanctuary as worthy of God as we can make it. The artist rendering on

display at the front of the church give you an approximate idea of what we want to

do. Happily, both the Parish Council and the Finance Council are completely on

board and enthusiastic about this project. Soon St. Joseph will rival any of the

more beautiful churches in the diocese. Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, To the Greater

Glory of God. Father Magiera
