Saints Alive! Fr. Ray’s favorite Saints this week…

Feb 11: St Evagrius Ponticus (345-399) is a super spiritual writer from Asia Minor who was friends with all the Cappadocian fathers; he gave us a clear description of acedia – the noon-day devil – a disgust for spiritual things. But wait! What about St. Pascal I Pope (824)? He’s the one who found the incorrupt body of St. Cecilia when he fell asleep during prayer at St. Peter’s and dreamed aright how to find her! Lifetime portraits in mosaic tile can be found of him in two Roman churches: S. Maria in Domnica and Santa Prassede. Feb 13: Bd. Jordan of Saxony (1177- 1237). The German second-in-command of the Dominican Order, provided significant material on St. Dominic but has also left detailed insight into his personality through a series of letters written to Bd. Diana d’Andalo (whose relics we venerate in Bologna). Feb 14: St. Cyril (827-869) and St. Methodius (815-884). These brothers are venerated as the apostles to the southern Slavic peoples. They created the Slavonic language and alphabet for the purpose of worship. St. Cyril died this day in 869 and is buried in the church of San Clemente (since he discovered the relics of Saint Clement, pope.) When in Rome, pray before the tombs of Cyril, especially if Slavic blood flows through your veins! Feb 15: St. Claude La Colombière (1641-1682). A gracious and kindly Jesuit who spent years preaching in my beloved second home in Avignon, but whose life was transformed by the conversations with his spiritual directee in Paray le Monial, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. We have the devotion to the Sacred Heart today, because he believed her. He was almost martyred in London. His time in jail destroyed his health: he died at 41 years of age. Feb 17: 7 Founders of the Servite Order (13th century) were a great group of men from

Florence who were bound together out of love for Mary, under the title of Our Lady of the 7 Sorrows. But what about the martyr St.

Francis Régis Clet (1748-1820)? A Lazarist priest from Grenoble who worked for 30 years in the interior of China in Wuchang, in the province of Hupeh. He was tortured and slowly strangled to death at the age of 72. I was given his relic which I will always expose for veneration on this day.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION SMALL GROUPS. Two new small groups are forming soon! True Reformers will explore the lives of six amazing saints of the Catholic Reformation, looking at the ways in which these holy people influenced the world around them for the better in the midst of a turbulent age. The

Catholic Imagination will introduce you to the writings, mostly fiction, of several prominent Catholic writers and thinkers of the last century, many of whom were adult converts to the faith, and explore the lasting impact these authors have had on our contemporary world. Both small groups are on Sundays from 10:10am-11:15am . Small groups are open to anyone age 18 or over and are a great way to learn about the riches of our Catholic faith while having fun, meeting others in our parish, and engaging in deep and fascinating discussions. For more information please contact Lacy Scheiber at [email protected].

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

Since we instituted our 6-7:00am daily Holy Hour, which is regularly attended by a significant number of parishioners and even many from outside our parish, we have noticed a corresponding drop-off in the number of those participating in our Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Because of this, we have decided to curtail Friday Adoration so that it will be limited to one hour following the School Mass. We invite all participants at Friday School Mass to consider staying after Mass to adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and enjoy a peaceful time of prayer as your schedule allows. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we implement this change.

BEST LENT EVER. The forty days of Lent are supposed to be a yearly opportunity for renewal through fasting, penance, and almsgiving, but too often, we just go through the motions and miss this chance for a life-changing encounter with our risen Lord Jesus Christ. Don't give up chocolate for Lent this year - instead, take a 40-day journey to become the best-version-of-yourself!

Our parish will be participating in Dynamic Catholic's Best Lent Ever program this year. Join us in this free email program to receive daily inspirational videos, practical tips, and encouraging stories for your Lenten journey. Are you ready to

have your best Lent ever? Sign up at dynamiccatholic.com/Lent.

February 14 - Ash Wednesday

February 22 - The GIFT life in the Spirit

We are collecting last years palms to burn for use on Ash Wednesday. Please place your palms in the marked baskets in the foyer and in the front vestibule. A ritual burning of the palms will be on

Shrove Tuesday at 6:30pm.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence. A day of fast means eating only one full meal for those ages 18 to 59. Anyone who is not able to fast because of health reasons is excused.

All Fridays during Lent are Days of Abstinence—no meat

for those 14 years of age and older.

February 15 & 16 - Stations of the Cross

As the seasons change, sometimes almost imperceptibly, it is natural to mark the passage of the year with little events and changes. So with the liturgical year, we mark the changes of the season, sometimes in dramatic and sometimes in small ways. For the past two months we have been singing Alma Redemptoris

Mater at Mass while the Church asks us to meditate on the mystery of the coming of the incarnate Word - first in anticipation (Advent), then in coming (Christmas), and lastly in manifestation (Epiphany, Baptism of the Lord, and Presentation). Now that the last of these feast days (Presentation, February 2nd) has passed it is time to turn our hearts and minds towards the approach of the great Fast - the season of Lent. One of the first signs of this change is the new Marian Antiphon Ave

Regina Caelorum. This beautiful and easy melody will be our way of asking Mary to accompany us through the penitential season and prepare us for for the glory of the coming Easter season.
