Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY- Adult Faith Formation-Lent
Continuing with our theme for this year’s Adult Faith For-mation program "Lord Teach Us to Pray", our Lenten study will be "Finding God in All Things: The Examen Prayer” with Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV.
Yes, you heard that right! Lent is right around the corner. Ash Wednesday is February 14th, so it is time for us to be-gin thinking about what we will offer God during this peni-tential season. All are welcome to join us and please invite a friend. The program will begin on Wednesday, February 21st from 7:00 PM- 8:30 PM in the St. James Church Hall. There are five sessions.
St. Ignatius Loyola's Examen is a daily meditation prac-ticed by Jesuit priests and many other Catholics as a way to reflect on the presence of God in the ordinary, and in this video series, Fr. Timothy Gallagher explains how this sur-prisingly simple prayer can make us more grateful indi-viduals. In an easy step by step process, Fr. Gallagher guides you through understanding the Examen and its purpose in finding God in all things.
Topics Included in this series, A Review of the Examen Prayer: Step One: Gratitude, Step Two: Petition, Step Three: Review, Step Four: Forgiveness, Step Five: Renewal.
Pre-Registration is required. To register please call Deacon and Karen Germain at 860-627-8830 or email them at [email protected]. The registration fee is $10.00 per person. Scholarships are available.
Our Parish Mission will be held on March 5-7 @ Saint James Parish. Father Dan Cambra from the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception will conduct a Parish Mission on the Divine Mercy.
Fr. Dan will preach at all Masses on the weekend of March 3/4. The Mission begins on Monday evening @ 7:00PM. Topics to be covered Monday-Wednesday evenings at 7:00PM will be:
✥ The “A,B,Cs” of Divine Mercy ✥ The Feast of Divine Mercy and How to receive the Graces of Divine Mercy Sunday ✥ How Divine Mercy is the Heart of the Gospel ✥ The Theological Meaning of the Image ✥ The Historical Background of St. Faustina ✥ Receive a Blessing with the Relic of St. Faustina
We hope that you will make a special effort to attend and bring a friend.

The door of faith is always open for us, ushering us into
the life of stronger Communion with God and offering
entry into his Church. This year, prepare for Easter by
receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Let us pray
that this Lenten initiate will rejuvenate Catholics of all
ages through spiritual reflection and their desire to be-
come one with God.
Several years ago, an exciting new ministry was intro-duced to our senior parishioners. Service for Seniors is a free service intended to provide miscellaneous light home maintenance to parishioners who are ei-ther at least 80 years old or who are disabled and not physically or safely able to perform these tasks on their own. The program is being staffed and adminis-tered by our local Knights of Columbus Council 1155. If you are eligible and you have a question about the program, please contact Gary Dahms at 860-647-8556, Joe Congdon at 860-647-8927 or email us at [email protected].
Our theme this year, “Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace”, is both powerful and timely. It comes from one of the most popular and well-loved prayers in the world: the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis. Peace-making is not an optional commitment. It is a require-ment of our faith. Time and again, Jesus calls us to be peacemakers. Faith intensifies our desire to address the questions of our times, precisely, in the light of the gospel: What is peace? What does it mean to be a peacemaker? What is the Christian response to vio-lence? During our retreat we will explore how we can place ourselves in the center of the storm and be an instrument of peace. For more information and to reg-ister for this retreat call Our Lady of Calvary office at 860-677-8519.

The FEBRUARY MACC Food Collection will be held the weekend of February 10/11.
There is a need for pasta sauce, cereal, soups, condiments, canned pasta/chili, canned corn, jelly, and peanut butter. If you would like to make a monetary donation,

February 2018 Saint James School News
DEVELOPING THE WHOLE CHILD
As stated in its mission statement, Saint James School
strives to develop the full potential of each child. A quick
review of the school’s offerings in sports, fine arts, extra-
curricular programs, and clubs shows how well the school
is fulfilling that promise. A wide range of activities offers
something to appeal to each child, whatever his or her
strengths or interests.
For the athletically-inclined, Saint James offers several op-
tions, including a robust basketball program for boys and
girls in Grades 4 through 8. This program is under the di-
rection of athletic director Chris Green and volunteer
coaches. Three varsity teams (two for boys and one for
girls), and three junior varsity teams (two for girls and one
for boys) compete against other schools in the area.
Last year, the girls varsity team won the Archdiocese
of Hartford basketball championship and went on to partici-
pate in the New England tournament.
In addition, there is a developmental basketball program
for boys in Grades 4 and 5, consisting of three or four teams
that play one another on an intramural level. Students in
Grades 3 through 8 can also participate in the Ski & Snow-
board Club or soccer, and fifth through eighth graders can
compete in cross country as well.
Those whose interests lie in the fine arts have several out-
lets in which they can express themselves. Budding musi-
cians can join the Choir or take part in the Instrumental Mu-
sic Program offered under the auspices of Connecticut Fu-
ture Musicians. Periodically, students enrolled in these ac-
tivities have a chance to perform at band concerts, musicals,
or carol sings. The children’s liturgical choir sings at the
monthly student Masses.

team reunites for the unveiling of the Championship banner.
But, as important as it is, music is not the only art form
available. Students may opt to participate in the Book &
Art Club or join their fellow thespians in the Drama Club.
This year, the new drama moderator, Mr. Glen Nicholes,
has developed a twelve-week program to introduce students
to the elements of drama.
In fact, extracurricular activities are available for almost
every subject offered in the curriculum. These include
spelling bees, essay contests, service projects, science fairs,
the St. Jude Math-a-thon, International Day, technology
challenges, and social studies reenactments.

student Kevin Canny conducts
the school’s Intermediate
Band during the school’s an-
nual Christmas Concert.

James School Choir perform
during the school’s annual
Christmas Concert.
All of these allow the child to pursue his or her favorite
subject in greater depth and see its real-world applications.
Other clubs are offered just for fun or to help students build
skills for their future careers. Students looking for some
friendly competition can find it in clubs devoted to board
games or robotics. They can hone their leadership skills
through Student Council or by becoming one of the Student
Ambassadors. Collectively, these wide-ranging activities
provide a valuable component to student learning. They
give all the children the opportunity to showcase their tal-
ents, develop new strengths, or discover how classroom
learning relates to real life. These vibrant programs are part
of what makes Saint James School such a special place to
learn!
