FROM THE PASTOR

"NOW GLAD OF HEART BE EV'RY ONE! THE FIGHT IS FOUGHT, THE DAY IS WON,

THE CHRIST IS SET UPON THE THRONE...THEN RISE, ALL CHRISTIAN FOLK WITH ME AND CAROL FORTH THE ONE-IN-THREE THAT WAS AND IS AND IS TO BE."

An Easter Sourcebook: The Fifty Days, p. 115

Now that the weather has finally turned nice, it seems more like spring and resurrection. This is a time of hope and new life, a reminder of all that is good for all of us. The warmer weather and the sun make us all feel good, as we have waited for this type of weather with expectation.

In today's Gospel, Jesus reminds his apostles that even though he is returning to the Father, his presence will continue to be with them. The gift of the Holy Spirit will be his abiding presence for them, and for all of us, to lead and guide, and reassure all of us that he will be with us all the days of our lives. While his resurrection assured his apostles of his presence, Jesus has to let them know that whatever they do to bring his message to others, it is the Spirit who will show them the way. These 50 Days of Mystagogia also help us bask in the glory of the resurrection so that we can bring new life to others by the way we live our lives. We are invited to help others experience this new life that Jesus gained for us, especially since the world needs to recognize that this time in particular is a time of hope and resurrection. There is too much negativity and pessimism in the world, and so someone has to stand for something different and better, and that person is Jesus. And because he is not here physically, he sends us to be his ambassadors of his Good News and a sign of his new life and resurrection. Sometimes the task seems difficult, but that doesn't make the importance and seriousness of the mission any less important. Now that all of our bills for the Parish Festival are paid, our net income is $31,001.00. That's very good considering that we had one rainy night and two nights when it rained later in the evening.

Hopefully, the weather will cooperate better next year! Last week, when I thanked all those who had something to do with the festival I neglected to THANK BRADLEY, SMITH & SMITH, who paid for the Super 50/50 tickets. I always appreciate their generosity to our parish. THANKS also to THE SPRINGFIELD POLICE DEPT., FIRE DEPT., & BOARD OF HEALTH, for their guidance and direction, making sure all was in order. Also, the final contribution from Easter is $33,797.00. The total is a little over $5,000 less than what we budgeted. THANK YOU ALL for your continued generosity and support of our parish. Also, THANK YOU to the YOUTH GROUP, ST. ZITA MINISTRY, THE PASTORAL COUNCIL & THE OTHER PARISHIONERS, who showed up to plant and clean up around the parish campus. They had a great day to make the campus look even better!! HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Mrs. Nancy Caputo, Director

On behalf of the parish priests, staff and Catechists, we congratulate all the children who were fed for the first time at the Table of our Lord, and look forward to sharing in this special meal with you often! Special thanks to Matt Wilson, Michelle Sblendorio and Denice Schmidt for enhancing the masses with their musical gifts! The weather is getting warmer and your thoughts are drifting toward your favorite vacation destination. Please take a moment to re-register for Fall classes by June 1st to take advantage of saving money and guaranteeing your preferred day in our Religion Program. This also helps us to assess how many volunteer teachers and aides we will need in September. If you have a child entering 1st grade (Kindergarten is optional) in September, please give us a call to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet and talk about your child’s faith formation. We offer traditional classroom learning (Sunday mornings and Tuesdays after school); Home Study (grades 3-6); and new this year, a Family Catechesis Program, which you will hear more about very soon. It does take a village to teach our children; it also takes many volunteers and we are hoping that you are hearing the call! If you are interested in teaching, co-teaching, aiding, or being an office volunteer, (day or evening) please contact the Religious Ed Office –let’s talk! Has your child been Baptized but not catechized or received their sacraments? Are they of school age and not yet baptized? Do you have a special needs child needing catechesis?

Please contact the Religious Education Office: 973-376-2061 or email: [email protected].

CONFIRMATION CORNER Ms. Ann Marie Gesualdo, Coordinator

Our Confirmation preparation classes concluded this past Tuesday. The next step for our Confirmandi is the retreat in the fall. Our classes were action-packed as we dove into our faith and the idea of closing the text book and engaging in head to heart thinking. Through honest and open discussions, projects and prayer they took the first steps in understanding what it means to be fully initiated members of the church. I am very proud of the Peer Leadership Team. These 16 young people ranging in age from 15 to 18 trained with me and then took the reigns on Tuesday nights to lead and mentor the small group discussions with our Confirmation Candidates. Their example is an inspiration and I congratulate them on a job well done! The Peer Team and I will begin meeting again next week to plan and prepare for our Confirmation Retreat in the fall. Reminder: Confirmation Parent meeting Tuesday, June 4th in Hatcher Hall at 7:00 pm. This is a parent only meeting, no children should attend. Please bring all required paperwork (if you have not already done so). Please feel free to contact me at 201-709-5280 or [email protected] with questions or concerns.

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. Caroline Ponterio, Principal

Saint James Got Artistic Talent!

The creative talents of our students continue to flourish under the direction of our Art teacher, Mrs. Traci Burns. This was evident on Thursday night, May 9, when family and friends were invited to attend Saint James the Apostle School’s 3rd annual Spring Art Show. The theme for this year’s show was “World of Animals.” Every student from PreK to Grade 8 had one or more of their creations on display. When you first entered Hatcher Hall, you were greeted by several octopuses hovering overhead on the ceiling in an octopus garden.

The following students received monetary awards from the American Legion for their entries in the annual coloring contest for Springfield: Ryan Ezaah-Milku (1st), Madison Stradford (2nd) and Jaylani Mendez (3rd). Ryan also received 3rd place overall for Union County. These students were honored last week in school with a visit from Commander Jerry Gebauer of the Springfield American Legion Post and Commander John Blank of the Union County American Legion, who presented their certificates and awards.

There were giraffes, sloths, dogs, pigs, emus, koi fish, toucans, polar bears, zebras and more. Our middle school students created a realistic beehive using a 2x4 wood frame covered in hexagonal shapes with hand drawn illustrations of bees. Our young students enjoyed comparing their heights to the lengths of a great white shark and a giraffe, which were both traced, cut out and taped to the floor in Hatcher Hall. Our students and their families enjoyed their zoological adventure as they walked from table to table admiring the art displays. Congratulations to our students for their participation and recognition in the Springfield Environment Commission and Springfield’s Department of Public Works “Clean Communities Day Sticker Contest.” These students were honored at the Springfield Township Council meeting where they received their Awards of Excellence: Sophia Hetrick – Grade 5, Gabriel Mejia-Sierra – Grade 4, Ryan Tavares – Grade 3 and Lillian Fiesta – Grade 2.

PARISH INFORMATION Keeping in Touch With One Another

"The Heavens declare the Glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands"

Psalm 19:1

This past Saturday, under a beautiful sunny sky, members of the Pastoral Council, St. Zita’s Ministry, parishioners and our Youth Group gathered to clean up and beautify the grounds of the church. God was smiling as he looked from heaven at a very determined group mulching, pruning, planting and enjoying each other as we basked in the glorious weather! THANK YOU to ALL who participated in improving our outside environment. With all the positive energy moving around us - truly all worked together for the good of our parish!

Thank you also to those who could not join us but donated much needed items!!!

Barnabas Health: Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division,

The Living Donor Institute

Have You Ever Considered Becoming A Living Kidney Donor?

* a kidney from a living donor has a lesser chance of being rejected

* lasts nearly twice as long as a kidney from a deceased donor

* helps keep the recipient off of dialysis and the donation "waiting list"

* and greatly improves the quality of life for the recipient

Our parish knows of someone in need of a kidney transplant; if you are seriously considering becoming a living kidney donor, please contact Fr. Joe.

PENTECOST SUNDAY, JUNE 8 /9, 2019 The color red symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit which baptized the Apostles and early disciples on the first Pentecost, marking the beginning of the Church.

ARE YOU LIVING TODAY WELL?

Today’s fast-paced and competitive culture does not allow for the time or space to live in a self- reflective way. Now more than ever we need to reflect on our humanity and our relationship with our Creator and all those with whom we come in contact everyday. We need a "spirituality of the heart," which is all-embracing and down-to-earth. Tue, Jun 11, 7-9 p.m. ($20-$30 as you are able) Presenter: G. Edwin Reitter Ed, a spiritual director and supervisor of spiritual di-rectors, has given numerous retreats and been in-volved in many parish-based ministries.

Please join us in prayer for the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with

Miraculous Medal Novena, Rosary and Benediction on

Monday evenings (as scheduled) at 6:30pm in our Church.

All are welcome!

MARY, THE MOTHER OF COMPASSION

Mary has a special love and sensitivity for all of

God’s children. This was manifested on many occasions but was most pronounced at the

wedding feast of Cana in which she interceded for the bride and groom when the supply of wine was depleted at their celebration. We can imitate sensitivity to the needs of others by donating any

unwanted clothing, small appliances, shoes, lin-

ens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, and books

(no reference books) to Catholic Charities. The donation bin is located in the Church’s parking

lot. Thank you.

The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark invites all parents who have suffered the death of a child of any age, by any means & at any time to attend Emmaus Minis-try: A One Day Retreat for Grieving Parents on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Notre Dame RC Church, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell, NJ. This full-day retreat affords bereaved parents the opportunity to join together in a caring, spir-itual setting for prayer, witnesses, discussion, fel-lowship and Mass. 973-497-4327 or mail: [email protected] Dear St. James the Apostle Parish Families,

THANK YOU for all your donations to the Hospitality Tent during the festival. We really appreciate what everyone contributed, which helped to make our festival a success. Peace and God Bless you all.

After many years of service, Tatiana Cespedes has announced her decision to step down from the Saint James Pastoral Council. Tatiana has played an integral part in promoting and advancing the spiritual growth of our parish and the extended community. As liaison to several parish ministries, Tatiana has helped to further the Church’s mission of evangelization and the good news that is Jesus Christ. We are all grateful for her dedication and stewardship.

On behalf of Fr. Joe, Fr. Silvano Kim, the parish staff, the pastoral council and parishioners,

THANK YOU TATIANA! May God richly bless you!
