T h a n k y o u , J e s u s , f o r y o u r l o v e !
He became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.
(2 Corinthians 8:9)
If you’ve ever pondered what heaven might be like, you
may have thought of a summer day: the bloom of the flowers,
the warmth of the sun, God’s creation bursting with life. Who
would ever want to leave such a beautiful place? And yet this
is what Jesus did when he left heaven to come and save us.
St. Paul explains why Jesus made such a sacrifice: “So
that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians
8:9). Jesus took on the “poverty” of our human limitations so
that we could inherit the richness of eternal life. He entered
so fully into our poverty, in fact, that he endured death—all
so that we could live forever.
Now, because of Jesus’ sacrifice, you can receive his riches
every single day. But how? Today’s Gospel shows us the way.
Both Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman knew they were in
desperate circumstances and that they needed the healing
that only Jesus could provide. Similarly, when we
God of joy, you fill our lives with blessings that so often go unnoticed. Give us the grace to be joyful in both our
abundance and lack and to recognize that you are present in all.. Amen.
acknowledge our spiritual poverty, we open our hearts to
receive Jesus’ riches.
So confess your weaknesses and your sins to the Lord.
Acknowledge the temptations that always seem to trip you
up. Tell Jesus that you need him.
Yet Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman didn’t just
admit their poverty. They also believed in the riches of Jesus’
love. Their faith opened a way for his divine power to flow.
Likewise, when you confess your neediness to the Lord, you
can be confident that he will fill you—not with material
wealth, but with the riches of his presence, his forgiveness,
and his wisdom.
Jesus’ poverty has won you untold riches—riches that
are available to you in a special way in Holy Communion. So
come to him in poverty and humility and faith. Come and let
him fill you.
“Lord, thank you for becoming poor to make me rich!
Thank you, Jesus, for your love!”

Inspiration for the week
“Do not be afraid, just have faith.” God does not rejoice in our demise or our destruction. Rather, He made us in his image and
desires that we have life. He also desires that we be healed and know His loving touch. There is great power in an embrace
offered in love. The touch of another can heal wounds and restore life. There is also power in faith. Faith can turn us toward the
truth and turn us toward God. Both love and faith can lead us to hope that no matter what we encounter, God will continue to
sustain us in being. He will not allow us to perish. God can profoundly change how we see Him, ourselves, and one another.
God desires that we turn toward Him and be healed of all that wounds and binds us so that we can be free and enjoy the
fullness of life. We are asked to arise and walk proudly with this life-giving faith. Reach out and share this faith with someone
this week so that they too can receive God’s life changing embrace and heed His call to wholeness. There are many in our world
wandering around aimlessly without hope. Bring it to them.

Prayer in Solitude by George Martin
An Excerpt from “Praying with Jesus”
Jesus often went off by himself to pray, arising in the morning before the
disciples or going to some solitary place. This setting for prayer is most
conducive to reflecting on the mystery of God’s plan unfolding in our lives,
just as Mary pondered in her heart the events surrounding the birth of her Son, Jesus (Luke 2:51).
Jesus likewise made use of prayer in solitude to ponder his mission on earth. Thus, after Jesus heard of the death of his
forerunner, John the Baptizer, he “withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself” (Matthew 14:13), presumably
so that he could have the privacy to enter into prayerful communion with his Father.
John’s death signaled the end of a preparation stage; now Jesus wanted to be alone with his Father so that he could
contemplate what lay before him.
The same type of prayer is necessary for us. Being a Christian is not a matter of obeying a certain set of rules that we can
memorize and follow without need for further direction. Being a Christian primarily means entering into a personal
relationship with God. Sustaining and nourishing that relationship requires personal contact with God.
We must ponder in our hearts the mystery of his presence in our lives and discern his will for us. Such prayer is different
from exuberant jubilation or loving intercession. Peaceful reflection on the mysteries of our faith is necessary for our growth
in faith.
George Martin is the founding editor of God’s Word Today, a daily guide to reading Scripture. He has written many books on
Scripture and spiritual issues, including Reading Scripture as the Word of God (Servant, 1993).
