COMMUNION ON TONGUE This is a reminder that those who wish to receive communion on the tongue must receive it from a priest or deacon and should wait to receive communion at the end of the line to minimize the possibility of contamination in case of contact with the tongue. The Archdiocese has asked us to continue to follow these protocols in order to protect those among us who are immuno-compromised and others who are vulnerable.
Our R.C.I.A. Program and our Thursday Night Catechism continues. Please join us on a journey that will answer many of your questions about the Catholic faith and practices. Sessions will be held most Thursdays from 7—9 PM in the Duchesne Hall and will run until the Triduum next April. Whether you are just beginning your faith journey or you've been at it many years, you'll certainly deepen your faith. Call the Parish Office at 3141-837-3165 for more information or to register for R.C.I.A. Those who are interested in Adult Faith are invited to attend any of the sessions you choose.

Remembering Our Loved Ones During the month of November the Church remembers and prays for those who have
died; family members and friends. We would like to display, in loving memory, pictures of our parish’s deceased loved ones on tables in
the Gathering Space.
Please bring to church framed pictures, no larger than 5X7 and place them on the
display tables. (Please write your name/phone number on

friends continue to live and love!

you can bring them home.

YOU DID IT! You've said 31 Rosaries and made it to the end of the October Rosary Challenge. It may have been challenging at times, but the spiritual benefits are just beginning. Hopefully you have formed some habits along the way that you can carry with you to keep up your daily Rosary.
Tip for Praying the Rosary Daily Keep the promises of the Rosary and the inspiring stories close by to refer to whenever you need inspiration. Just in case you didn't copy the emails, contact Mary Krummey at [email protected] to get the information. Do this challenge again whenever you need a boost. Invite family and friends to participate and hold each other accountable. It's always easier to keep up when others are praying with you! "The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying!"

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Pg. 7 November 7, 2021
This year, it seems the Lectionary’s scriptures not only reinforce the Catholic tradition of November prayer for our beloved departed, but also join with nature’s storms and the pandemic as well as humanity’s violent disasters to remind us that we are moving inexorably toward the end of history, both the world’s and our own. Today’s Old Testament reading prepares us for a fruitful hearing of the Gospel. The primary challenge set before us is an undoubted faith that prompts the total giving of self. That lesson is offered to us with an urgency matching November’s eschatological motif: the End and the Judgment. Two widows are presented, the Old Testament’s widow of Zarephath and the Gospel’s widow of the temple. Both exemplify faith-filled people who quietly give what they cannot afford: their all, for the glory of God and in the service of others. GREAT FAITH IS DEMANDED We quickly come to admire the Old Testament widow whom Elijah asks for help. The Zarephath widow is carrying only “a couple of sticks,” to cook her limited resources, “a handful of flour and a little oil,” fulfilling her personal responsibility, “for myself and my son” (1 Kings 17:12). Elijah’s request demands great faith and self-sacrifice of this poor widow, because providing such life-sustaining care to a “foreign” prophet puts the widow’s survival and her son’s at great risk: her religion is worshipping paganism’s false idol, Baal; her king is father of Jezebel, now wife of Elijah’s king Ahab. Elijah is fleeing the death-threatening wrath of both Jezebel and Ahab, whom Elijah infuriated by declaring that God had decreed a drought to punish them for corrupting Israel with Jezebel’s Baal-worship. Elijah makes the widow’s risk explicit by promising that her flour and oil will not fail by power of “the Lord, the God of Israel (not her god, Baal!)” (17:14). Therefore, faith is demanded both of the one who gives, the widow, and of the one who asks, Elijah. SELF-SACRIFICING GIFT Today’s Gospel episode takes place just after Jesus enters Jerusalem immediately before his Passion. Trustfully and with self-sacrifice, like Zarephath’s widow and the widow whom Jesus sees at the temple, Jesus will give his all for our redemption. Thus Jesus emphasizes of the widow he sees that her gift is unreserved: “from her poverty, all she had, her whole livelihood” (Mark 12:44). And, doubtlessly, Jesus saw himself and his self-giving in her and her self-giving. In Mark’s next chapter Jesus predicts the downfall of this very temple. So the widow’s unreserved giving from what she could not afford must have struck Jesus both as a victimization by others and, in the end, as a useless gift: the building controlled by the scribes’ manipulation was destined for destruction. Her giving became a vivid prefiguring of his own victimization by others in the unreserved giving of his very life, which would seem to many a useless gift, for Jesus would die and be buried. Only Jesus’ true disciples—are we?—believe that, by his resurrection, Jesus has become the Cornerstone of the new building, the Church, that replaces that torn-down temple. Therefore, we are to make our own gift of self to God in our unceasing gift of self-sacrificing love to others until Jesus comes again. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Inc.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS Every four years, we engage in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in “chapter” at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in “chapter” by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don’t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a time will do! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
FEAST OF FAITH CONCLUDING RITES The Prayer after Communion gives us a glimpse of the heavenly banquet, of which we have had a foretaste in the Eucharist. The concluding rites speak of what we are to do with this great gift of God. That includes the parish announcements, which are usually given following the Prayer after Communion. Believe it or not, the announcements, which are not an “official” part of the Mass, have been included in the Mass from as early as the fifth century! The deacon or the homilist—even the bishop—would announce coming liturgical celebrations and encourage the people to participate. Today’s parish announcements include opportunities for prayer, service, learning, and community building. They should be succinct and should include only significant events and activities in the life of the parish. But even when they are long and tedious, the announcements (and the parish bulletin) flow out of the concluding rites of the Mass. They offer us ways to live the Eucharist, to become what we have received—the Body of Christ, living and active in our local community. God’s kingdom of justice here and now. —Corinna Laughlin Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE POOR As Christians, we hear a lot about the witness and service that we are called to render to the poor among us. However, the poor also have a witness and a service to render to us. Like the actions of the widow in today’s Gospel, the openness and generosity of many of those who are poor, even in the midst of their own poverty, bear witness to the fact that, ultimately, we can depend only on God. Giving one’s all witnesses that God will give all to anyone who trusts in divine goodness. The poor or disadvantaged also serve. They serve judgment on our individual and corporate ways of acting. If people are sleeping in our streets, that is a judgment on our priorities regarding others. At the same time, the poor can act as mediators of salvation. When they care for others they can redeem our indifference and insensibility, lead us to care as well, and save us from ourselves. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! Service
God again teaches the virtue of humility and service in the Christian life. Jesus advises us to reject the practices of the Pharisees who work so that they may be seen. Instead we should work quietly and humbly to accomplish what we have been commissioned to do and not merely to be seen by other people. There is great merit in toiling, persevering through difficult work with the sole purpose of serving God and our neighbors. When we work to be seen by others, our work loses its spiritual meaning. We must keep in mind that Christ tells us that we are the greatest when we serve most wholeheartedly and most selflessly. Another helpful Scripture passage for reflection is Colossians 3:17: “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”
