My Dear Parishioners,
For those of you with college aged children, this is a very busy week in your household. This is particularly true if you have your first child going off to college. I'm sure that the feeling is bittersweet - you are happy that they have successfully reached this big step in their life, but you are also perhaps worried about their safety, and the
new influences on their life, over which you will have very little control. As a pastor and spiritual father, I am proud of our college aged parishioners, but I too am always concerned and worried that all we did in our Catholic schools, CCD programs and Youth Ministry to instill and form them in our faith will be wiped away or injured by certain professors who love to criticize the Church's teachings. Too often I hear how by their powerful influence over our students, these professors actually succeed in helping our young people lose their faith. I have found after 40 years of priesthood that there is truth in the phrase that, "The only acceptable bigotry in the United States at this time is anti-Catholicism." In light of what I just said, I advise parents to make your college students aware of two important online resources, for them to utilize in the event that a professor or even a friend challenges or criticizes their faith. In each case sometimes your child, who is not used to such attacks, might not be sure of what to personally think, or how to respond. Those two resources are FORMED and CATHOLIC ANSWERS. FORMED, which calls itself "the Catholic faith on demand," is an online platform with all kinds of well done Catholic programs, movies, e-books, etc. St. Bede Parish owns a parish-wide subscription to this resource, which can be access through our parish website (www.st-bede.org). Your child can enter our Parish Code (RBPXCB) and have instant access to very good material. CATHOLIC ANSWERS can easily and freely be accessed through our Parish website, Google or other search engines. It offers continual, quick, easy answers to all kinds of questions or misinformation that is often used in attacks against Catholic teaching. There is even a blog, where Catholic apologists are prepared round the clock to respond to any and all questions. As our college parishioners leave for another year of higher education, we pray that what was spoken about Jesus when He was a young man can be said of them, that "They advanced in wisdom and knowledge in the site of God and man." May God Bless You,

Scripture Readings Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 21, 2016 Isaiah 66: 18-21 Psalm 117 Hebrews 12: 5-7, 11-13 Luke 13: 22-30 Whenever we hear the readings proclaimed at Mass, it is good for us to listen to how the first reading gives us a focus for listening to the Gospel. So even though in much of this Gospel Jesus talks about how our ac-tions can exclude us from the heavenly banquet, He concludes with a sweeping statement of inclusion: “And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south,” echoing the line from the first reading, “I come to gather nations of every language.” What must we do to be included in that number?

Religious EducationReligious Education Dear Parishioners,
Our Information Session for the up-coming RCIA process is scheduled for Thursday - September 1st in the Drexel Center at 7:00 p.m.. The only reason to be Catholic is to be-come a Saint. Trinitarian love is our hope, our goal, our end and the reward we, like St. Paul, await: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:7-8) For a Catholic with a truly converted heart, everything in life is oriented to the end of life, where Christ himself will be the measure of all that each person has experienced and accom-plished. The Catholic's life is focused not on goods of this world, but on the "pearl of great price" (see Matthew 13:45-46), eternal happiness with God in Heaven. At the same time, the worldview of a Catholic abounds in hope and a realistic assessment of death as the door to eternal life, not something to be ignored, denied, or escaped. The holy death of a loved one, even a beloved son or daughter, is a source of joy as well as of mourning, and even the death of one obviously not prepared to meet God does not destroy hope, for God's mercy extends be-yond the grave. Holiness is not mere goodness, for many people have been good but not holy. Holiness is "Godness," desiring "what God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Corinthians 2:9), when we shall see God, in all His glory, beauty and love, "as He is" (1 John 3:2). The Church exists solely for the purpose of making sinners into saints. Let us pray for those who are now considering the journey toward full initiation into the Catholic Church. God Bless,
Ms. Carole Obrokta

Adoration SocietyAdoration Society "Could you not watch one hour with me?" (MT. 26:40)
Tired of the hectic and frantic pace of life today? Are you worried and getting nowhere? Let Jesus be a “Game Changer” for your life. Spend an hour a week with Jesus present – Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity - in Eucharistic Adoration. Become a committed adorer and follower of Jesus. Knock, Seek and Ask - receive His mercy and forgiveness. The Adoration Chapel is a great place to commit to a Holy Hour each week. Allow Jesus to make positive changes in your life. See below for open hours; Monday 10AM, Tuesday 2AM, Friday 12AM, 5AM & 12PM, and Saturday 2AM, 5AM, 6PM & 8PM. Our Adoration Ministry needs two committed adorers for each hour. We are very short of this goal. For more information and to sign up please call Sean & Debbie at 215-504-9897 or e-mail us at [email protected].
