The Sea of Galilee is full of life - teaming with fish while the Dead Sea to the south is dead - incapable of supporting any life

Ironically both seas are fed from the same source - the Jordan River But there is a major difference The Dead Sea holds on to the water it receives which stagnates and dies but the Sea of Galilee allows the waters flowing from the Jordan on the north to pass through it and flow again into the Jordan on the south The Sea of Galilee gives back the water which it receives and lives - The Dead Sea holds on to it and dies

We sometimes do that too When we hold on to the love that our mothers love has given us over the years taking it for granted without returning it to create a new bond of life then our relationship with our mother stagnates and dies For love to grow it has to be given away It cannot stand still and live

So today I suggest that we all take this opportunity to let our mothers love flow freely through our hearts and find its outlet in a renewed expression of warmth and affection Such free flowing love will enhance both her life and our own not just today but will continue to grow as it flows into our to-morrows

FORGIVENESS An essential part of that love is forgiveness We all make mistakes - sometimes serious mistakes both mothers and children But to hold on to those mistakes to make them barriers to our ability to love is the biggest mistake of all - To hold on to the mistakes we have experienced in our relationships with our mothers is to stagnate and die

We can forgive both our mothers and ourselves To let go to let those hurts those mistakes flow through our love is recreative alive and vital Ironically it is these very misunderstandings that can become sources of new life - when we open ourselves up to one another So the biggest gift you can offer each other today is the gift of forgiveness - to let go of the closed deadening righteousness of the critic and open up your hearts to give and receive the life giving flow of compassionate love

May 10 2015

When you have done that then your material gifts of flowers or dinner out have real meaning

BLOCKS Some of you may feel guilty or sad thinking that you are unable to express your compassion because your mothers are dead or unknown or far away or unyielding - but offer that gift of love and forgiveness for your own sakes and you will live more freely Psychologist Abraham Maslow died of a heart attack at age 65 Despite his tremendous

contribution to the human potential movement personal growth and self-actualization he was never able to resolve his own deep seated resentment toward his mother That dammed up love was a block in his own personal growth which he was either unable or unwilling to remove She died and he died without ever reconciling their differences Even we as amateurs can recognize the tragedy of such a relationship We feel a deep sadness that this giant in self-actualization was unable to remove the blocks in one of the most fundamental relationships and realize his own insights in his own life When Christ was asked to give us a commandment for life he repeatedly urges us to Love one another as I have loved you His love is unconditional it is not determined by our goodness it is our goodness which enables us to return his love To-day at this mothers day liturgy let us unite our hearts with Christ and together with him express our love for our mother and rejoice in her love for us

MAY THE MONTH OF MARY ndash Marian Readings

May 10

MARY PRESENTING JESUS IN THE TEMPLE

She teaches us to have charity Remember the scene of the pre-sentation of Jesus in the temple An old man Simeon said to

Mary lsquoBehold This child is destined to bring about the fall of many and the rise of many in Israel-and to be a sign which people will refuse to acknowledge so that the thoughts of many

hearts shall be made manifest As for your own soul it shall have a sword pierce it So great is Marys love for all mankind that she

too fulfilled Christs words lsquoGreater love has no man than this that he should lay down his life for his friends

May 10 2015

Let us offer to our Mother today A pilgrimage to one of her shrines

May 11

MARY WELCOMING THE MAGI

lsquoGoing into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother Our Lady is always near her Son The Magi are not received by a king on a high throne but by a child in the arms of his mother

Let us ask the Mother of God who is our mother to prepare for us the way that leads to the fullness of love Her sweet heart knows the surest

path for finding Christ

Let us offer to our Mother today A visit to a poor person to communicate our Ladylsquos concern for that person

May 12

MARY HER FLIGHT TO EGYPT WITH JOSEPH

AND THE CHILD JESUS

The mystery of Mary helps us to see that in order to approach

God we must become little Christ said to his disciples lsquoBelieve me unless you become like little children again you shall not

enter the kingdom of heaven

To become children we must renounce our pride and self-sufficiency recognizing that we can do nothing by ourselves We must realize that we need grace and the

help of God our Father to find our way and keep to it

Let us offer to our Mother today A visit to a lonely person to share the joy of trusting in God alone

May 13

MARY HER HIDDEN LIFE WITH JESUS

Go back in your imagination to the years Jesus spent close to his mother years which span almost the whole of his life on earth Picture him as a little child cared for by Mary who kisses him and

plays with him See him growing up before the loving eyes of his mother and of Joseph his father on earth What tenderness and

care Mary and the holy Patriarch must have shown toward Jesus as they looked after him during his childhood all the while

silently learning so much from him Their souls would become more and more like

the soul of that Son who was both man and God This is why his mother and after her St Joseph understand better than anyone the feelings of the heart of Christ

and the two of them are thus the best waythe only way to reach the Savior

Let us offer to our Mother today The effort of doing our ordinary work well on time with competence and finesse

May 10 2015

May 14

MARY LOSING AND FINDING THE CHILD JESUS

The Mother of God who looked for her Son so anxiously when he was lost (through no fault of her own) and

experienced such great joy in finding him will help us retrace our steps and put right whatever may be

necessary when because of our carelessness or our sins we have been unable to recognize Christ With her help we will know the happiness of holding him in our arms once more and telling him we will never lose

him again

Let us offer to our Mother today A good sincere sorrowful confession of our sins and failures in the sacrament of Penance

May 15

MARY AT CANA

In the Gospel St John has recorded a wonderful phrase

of our Lady At the wedding of Cana she turned to the waiters and said lsquoDo whatever he tells you That is what

it is all about -- getting people to face Jesus and ask him lsquoLord what do you want me to do

Let us offer to our Mother today Prompt obedience when we are called or asked to

do some errand or some act of service

May 16

MARY AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS

We find her on Calvary at the foot of the cross praying This is nothing new for Mary She has always acted like this in fulfilling

her duties and looking after her home As she went about the things of this earth she kept her attention on God

Let us offer to our Mother today An act of contrition said many

times asking her to offer our sorrow for our sins to Jesus crucified

Saint Monica a Mothers Saint

Saint Monica is a patron saint for mothers and wives She was an

exemplary woman who never gave up hope and her faith in God among

all tribulations in her family life If there are mothers out there who

suffer from children gone astray here is your saint whom you could take

as a role model Also if there are wives out there whose husbands are

being disloyal or abusive St Monica is your saint whom you could ask

for prayer

St Monica was born in the year 332 in Tagaste North Africa Monica had a conversion

experience at a very young age and lived a life of virtue When she reached a marriageable

age her parents gave her in marriage to a non-Christian man named Patricius Monicarsquos

husband Patricius not only came home drunk each day but had a violent temper and

Monica was often the victim of his rage Patricius was not a faithful husband and therefore

Monicarsquos life was full of trials

Monica endured all her trials with patience gentleness and kindness She would pray daily

for the conversion of her husband even though he would oppose her Christian practices

Her strong faith and hope in Godrsquos mercy finally bore fruit Patricius accepted his wifersquos faith

a year before his death He admitted that he admired his wifersquos strong faith and it was her

unwavering kindness towards him that changed him

Monica and Patricius had three children out of whom St Augustine was the son who was to

give his mother the worst heart aches

St Augustine was brilliant in his studies and therefore was sent to Carthage so he could

develop his talents and become a man of culture Although he excelled in his studies his

behaviour became unacceptable to his mother He not only went into lose living with

women alcohol and addictions of all kinds but also he got involved with a cult called

Manichaeism One could only imagine the anguish of this poor mother Saint Monica

Monica never gave up her prayers for her son She would fast cry and beg God for her

sonrsquos conversion Legend says that a drain formed in the ground where her tears fell while

she prayed for her son Monica would approach the local bishop and ask them to win her

son over to the faith

The Bishop would often console her saying ldquoGodrsquos time will come Go now it is not

possible that the son of so many tears should perishrdquoMonica was a mother who never

gave up

Finally the time came when Augustine was twenty nine a successful teacher and had to

work under the influence of Bishop Ambrose Monica found that her son had at this stage

given up Manichaeism Monica made friends with Bishop Ambrose in order to help her son

give up his current lifestyle

May 10 2015

For her greatest Joy Augustine not only embraced Christianity during an Easter celebration

but he decided to live a life of celibacy and devote himself to Godrsquos service St Augustine

was not only a wonderful Bishop but later became one of the greatest saints and doctors of

the Catholic church This was the culminating point of his mothers prayers being answered

Can we mothers persevere like St Monica

At Monicas death bed she said to her son Augustine ldquoI do not know what there is left

for me to do or why I am still here all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled

All I wished for was that I might see you a Catholic and a child of Heaven God

granted me even more than this in making you despise earthly felicity and

consecrate yourself to His servicerdquo

Saint Monica therefore has been honoured for generations as a special patroness of

married women and an example for Christian motherhood

Prayer to Saint Monica

Exemplary Mother of the Great Augustine you perseveringly pursued your

wayward son not with threats but with prayerful cries to heaven Intercede for all

mothers in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God Teach

them how to remain close to their children even the prodigal sons and daughters

who have sadly gone astray Dear St Monica troubled wife and mother many

sorrows pierced your heart during your lifetime Yet you never despaired or lost

faith With confidence persistence and profound faith you prayed daily for the

conversion of your beloved husband Patricius and your beloved son Augustine

your prayers were answered Grant me that same fortitude patience and trust in

the Lord Intercede for me dear St Monica that God may favorably hear my plea

(mention your intention here) Grant me the grace to accept His Will in all things

through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and

ever Amen

PLEASE REMEMBER THOSE WHO NEED OUR PRAYERS

Oh God our Father we pray You restore to physical health those who are weakened

with illness Give peace of mind to those troubled with worry and comfort those

discouraged with problems Help them find their inner strength a faith and trust in

you and a love for one another to guide them through any health challenges or

troubles they may face Amen Please pray for the health of Harvey Lysack Please pray for the

health of Linda Goral Please pray for the health of Terry Prychitko Please pray for the health

of Lou Gollets Please pray for the health of Ann Armour Please pray for the health of Marie

contribution to the human potential movement personal growth and self-actualization he was never able to resolve his own deep seated resentment toward his mother That dammed up love was a block in his own personal growth which he was either unable or unwilling to remove She died and he died without ever reconciling their differences Even we as amateurs can recognize the tragedy of such a relationship We feel a deep sadness that this giant in self-actualization was unable to remove the blocks in one of the most fundamental relationships and realize his own insights in his own life When Christ was asked to give us a commandment for life he repeatedly urges us to Love one another as I have loved you His love is unconditional it is not determined by our goodness it is our goodness which enables us to return his love To-day at this mothers day liturgy let us unite our hearts with Christ and together with him express our love for our mother and rejoice in her love for us

Dohan Please pray for the health of Walter Latocki Please pray for the health of Adeline

but he decided to live a life of celibacy and devote himself to Godrsquos service St Augustine

was not only a wonderful Bishop but later became one of the greatest saints and doctors of

the Catholic church This was the culminating point of his mothers prayers being answered

Notes

Dohan Please pray for the health of Walter Latocki Please pray for the health of Adeline

Shymanski

Notes
