TRADITION

Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy, a couple will receive some advice about a “unity candle.” They need one, they are told (at great expense); it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done. Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has never been officially part of our liturgy, and it exists in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually there are two smaller candles and one larger one to be lit from the smaller. Large candles in our tradition always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always tokens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are meant for a kind of renewal of baptismal vows, then the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom the understanding. Why, then, are those smaller candles extinguished? It’s hard to tell where these pesky candles came from. Some suggest that the Presbyterian Church, which has a very lean wedding liturgy, introduced them as an option for extending a short service. Generally, it’s been experi-enced as a “photo opportunity” rather than a genuine litur-gical ritual. The “unity candle,” a recent invention rather than an authentic tradition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our rite, and it is to be hoped that it will grad-ually disappear from view. —Rev. FEEDING THE WORLD

With today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed sev-en times. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of mul-titudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gentle-ness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Para los hispanos y las personas de otras culturas, el recuerdo y vinculación con nuestros antepasados es algo muy importante. De hecho, en las culturas latinoamerica-nas se usan los apellidos del padre y de la madre para en-fatizar de dónde y de quiénes provienen. Muchas perso-nas han conservado esta misma tradición aquí en Estados Unidos. Este sentido de conectarnos a nuestros antepasa-dos también se encuentra en la fe cristiana. Mediante la imposición de manos, por citar un ejemplo, llegamos has-ta los apóstoles. Podríamos decir que los cuatro evangelios subrayan esta vinculación con los orígenes de nuestra fe. La forma en que lo hacen, aunque pequeña, es interesante. Luego de que todos comieron de los panes y los peces multipli-cados por Jesús, recogieron doce canastos llenos de pan. En cierta manera, los evangelistas aseguran que el pan que Jesús dio al gentío de su tiempo nos lo sigue dando hoy en la eucaristía. Ahora, este pan es la carne de Jesús, quien se hace ofrenda y hostia (sacrificio) por nosotros.

ALIMENTANDO AL MUNDO Al oír las narraciones de cómo Eliseo y Jesús multiplican los alimentos, y el salmo responsorial sobre como la mano del Señor nos alimenta, es fácil caer en la tentación de pa-sar por alto el maravilloso himno de la carta a los efesios en la Segunda lectura. El himno se centra en los números más potentes de la tradición bíblica: el uno, el tres y el sie-te. La médula del himno es el número uno, repetido siete veces. Tres de ellas se refieren a la Iglesia: un solo cuerpo, un solo Espíritu, como también una sola es la esperanza. Los próximas tres son los fundamentos de la Iglesia: un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo. Y todos estos se juntan en un solo Dios y Padre de todos. La idea de repetir los milagros obrados por Eliseo y por Jesús al alimentar las multitudes nos desalienta, claro está, pero la carta a los efesios nos ofrece un modo más realizable de vivir como Iglesia y de alimentar a los demás en la Iglesia: ser siempre humildes y amables; ser comprensivos y soportarnos mu-tuamente con amor, y esforzarnos en mantenernos unidos en el Espíritu con el vínculo de la paz. ¿Quién de nosotros no puede “alimentar” a la comunidad de la Iglesia viviendo de esta manera? Es verdad que siempre estamos llamados a “alimentar” al mundo en el sentido literal de la palabra, pero nuestra misión como Iglesia también nos dice que a los demás también hay que alimentarlos por la manera en que vivimos y actuamos cada momento de cada día.

2015 Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest “Religious Freedom” Religious freedom is a fundamental human right that everyone in the world should have. It is an important right that each person should have as it is part of one’s identity and benefits everyone.

Religious freedom… it gives a person the right to believe however he or she chooses to. It also gives them the right to choose not believe at all. It is something that many has fought for in history; the reason why America exists. Not everyone can experience having this kind of free-dom, and it is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. In a world where religion is not the center of life, it should be kept treasured and preserved.

The right of choosing whether to believe or not to believe is just as important to a society as oxygen is to the world. It is just as important as a person’s freedom in their country. A person can be free physically, but if you take away religious freedom, you are locking them up morally. If one is not able to morally be free, then you might as well lock them up in a place of seclusion because it is just the same as not being able to believe freely. Coming into this world, the right to believe whoever one chooses should be a given—something with no cost or price.

Some may not thinks so, but one’s religion does matter. It is not something to disregard because it is part of who they are. It can play a big role in someone’s life and determine how they are as a being. It can lead a person to a path of good works and peace; a path centered on making the world a better place. Religious values and teachings can be the sole reason as to why the world changed for the better. Religion brings many people who believe in the same faith together as one. It gives people the ability to come together to be the cause of a peaceful change in society.

In conclusion, religious freedom is necessary in the world we live in today. It is something that shouldn’t be taken away from anyone, believ-er or not. Libertad religiosa es un derecho humano fundamental, que toda persona en el mundo debe tener. Es un derecho importante que cada per-sona debe tener como parte de identidad y beneficio de todos.

Libertad religiosa… le da a la persona el derecho de creer cualquier cosa que el o ella escoja. También da el derecho a optar por no creer en nada. Es algo por lo que muchos han luchado en la historia; es la razón porque América existe. No todo el mundo puede experimentar este tipo de libertad, y es algo que no debe darse por sentado. En un mundo donde la religión no es el centro de la vida, se debe tener ate-sorado y preservado.

El derecho de elegir si creer o no creer es tan importante para una sociedad como el oxigeno es para el mundo. Es tan importante como la libertad de una persona en su país. Una persona puede ser libre físicamente, pero si le quitas la libertad religiosa, lo encerramos moralmen-te, si uno no es capaz de ser moralmente libre entonces también hay que encerrarlos en un lugar de reclusión, ya que es lo mismo que no poder creer libremente. Al llegar a este mundo, el derecho de creer quien uno elige deber ser algo dado sin costo o precio.

Algunos no piensan así, pero la propia religión importa. No es algo para no tener en cuenta, ya que es parte de lo que son. Puede desem-peñar un papel muy importante en la vida de una persona y determinar la forma en que son como un ser. Esto puede llevar a una persona a un camino de las buenas obras y la paz, un camino centrado en hacer del mundo un lugar mejor. Valores religiosos y la enseñanza puede ser la única razón de por que el mundo cambie para mejor. Religión trae muchas personas que creen en la misma fe juntos como uno. Da a la gente la capacidad de unirse para ser la causa de un cambio pacifico en la sociedad.

En conclusión, la libertad religiosa es necesaria en el mundo en que vivimos hoy. Es algo que no debe ser quitado de cualquiera persona, creyente o no.
