"He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick-no food, no sack, no money in their belts." Jesus gave the Twelve Apostles a remarkable mission. He sent them out two by two to preach repentance, to cast out evil spirits, and to heal the sick. And he made them do it in a spirit of complete dependence upon God. They were not allowed to take anything along that would have given them material comfort or security. These men--who did not even have the witness of other apostles or saints to inspire or give them courage, and who had not yet beheld the Resurrection of the Lord--stepped out into the world with literally nothing but their faith in this man named Jesus. And look what happened! "The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them." The apostles' trust in God's power to work these miracles through their hands began with trust in God's power to provide for their own needs. Because they didn't have food, shelter, or money, every time they received food or shelter or had their needs met, the apostles were able to see that God was at work in their midst. This experience bolstered their faith and encouraged them in their mission. When we find ourselves questioning whether we really have the "power" to do what God wants us to do, then we ought to step back and try to depend a little more directly upon God's providence. Tithing is one way to accomplish this. When we set aside a portion of our income for the sake of others, we make an act of trust in God's power to provide for us. Surrendering this element of care for ourselves allows God to meet our needs himself. And when he does, our faith will flourish too. LPI, Inc.

Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a registered parishioner

makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a which registration card. These may be found narthex of the church or chapel, the parish office during the week or online at our parish website: www.allsoulssanford.org. Why not sign up today?

Q & A regarding Baptism...

My best friend is a baptized Lutheran and is a good

Christian. I would like her to be my child’s sponsor, but I’m

wondering, does she have to be a practicing Catholic?

This is a frequent question we receive in the parish office. The practice of two godparents for an infant’s baptism goes back to the time when church law and civil law were one and the same in Europe. If anything did happen to the

parents, the custody and well-being of the child became the responsibility of the godparents. Adult baptism required that one have a sponsor from the church who would act as a guide or mentor, in bringing the person to faith.

Today, being a godparent has no legal implications. It is a spiritual matter. But the Church requires at least one of the godparents must be a practicing Catholic, that they have received the three sacraments of initiation (baptism, first communion and confirmation), be at least 16 years of age, and if married, have been married in the Catholic Church. Your Lutheran friend is called a Christian witness. This distinction recognizes the difference between religion. A Christian can be a witness because of their relationship to God (faith), but the Catholic is a mentor in the practice of the religion.

In any event, it is vital that parents give serious consideration to the people they choose to be a child’s godparents. That choice should be based on practice of faith, solid moral character and ability to give good example. Too often the choice is left to whose turn it is in the family, or to friends that parents wish to honor or acknowledge in some way. Your choice of godparents is the first lesson of faith you teach your child. Make it count!

I have two questions about baptism. First, is there

such a thing as getting unbaptized? Secondly,

can you change godparents?

People have called into the parish office asking these questions. In order to be ‘unbaptized,’ you would need the power to change the past. We all know that once something is done, it cannot be undone.

Its effects might be nullified, or minimized, but the event itself remains. The same idea can be applied to godparents, whose role is to assist parents in raising children in the faith. Once a choice is made, it cannot be undone. If a godparent falls short of your expectations, you can always focus your attention on the person you choose as the sponsor for confirmation. We repeat: Your choice of godparents is the first lesson of faith you teach your child. Make it count!

Have you ever heard the saying that the natural explains the spiritual? One would have to be completely naïve not to realize that there is a rapidly growing shortage and supply of water across the world. While one part of our country is inundated with flooding waters, another section is roasting with dry winds and lack of water. It isn't surprising that local governments are contending with restrictions even for farmers and ranchers and imposing serious fines on those who waste water uselessly with no concerns for the common good. Where once there were wars over oil rights, today there is a growing sense of unease among communities that fear their lifestyle and securities are threatened because of the unavailability of water. Water is our most essential element, and only oxygen is equal to its necessity. We can survive for some time without food, but without water the human being would be a dead duck in a matter of days. In his new encyclical, “Laudato Si,” Pope Francis says water is a fundamental right and draws our attention to the growing scarcity of clean water, and the privatization of existing water.

"Even as the quality of available water is constantly diminishing, in some places there is a growing tendency, despite its scarcity, to privatize this resource, turning it into a commodity subject to the laws of the market. Yet access to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right, since it is essential to human survival and, as such, is a condition for the exercise of other human rights. Our world has a grave social debt towards the poor who lack access to drinking water, because they are denied the right to a life consistent with their inalienable dignity.” [Laudato Si, II The Issue of Water, 27-31]

In the Bible water relates both figuratively and literally as a means of purification and cleansing. “Blessed are those who wash their robes and have the right to the tree of life.” (Rev 22:14) And again, "And let him who is thirsty come, let him who desires take the water of life.” (Rev 22:17) In our dual nature of body and mind what is true for the body is likewise true for the mind. Just as our basic physical need is water, so is our basic spiritual need for what Jesus called the "water of life." Our baptism by water is the main means that God's power and grace are revealed to us and through which we begin our Christian Life. It reminds us of our creator and savior; unites us with the Spirit, and transforms and purifies both the world and each and every believer. Let us see our baptism and water both as gifts of God, freely given to us, and allow the Holy Spirit to move us to answer Christ’s call to holiness. Then we will see our reservoirs are truly full.

Next weekend, we welcome Father Devaraju (Devan) Arocklasamy from the Diocese of Tiruchirappalli, South India. He

will share the various missionary activities at the diocese of Tiruchirappalli, India. We pray for the success of his ministry. A brief description about the Diocese of Tiruchirappalli: It may surprise some of us to know that St. Thomas the Apostle went to India in the first Century and preached the Gospel. There is a community of Christians, known as St. Thomas Christians living in India. As the days passed, missionaries came from Europe and preached the Good News in the region of Tamil Nadu. A charismatic missionary, St. Francis Xavier baptized thousands of people in the diocese of Tiruchirappalli some 400 years before. Today the diocese has been blessed with 115 diocesan priests along with 1,026 religious men and women serving 65 parishes, 285 mission stations. The total number of Catholics is approximately 230,000 in the diocese. The rest of the communities are Hindus, Muslims and other religious sects. Missionary programs include evangelization, faith formation, and education, catechetical and developmental activities. Your support and generosity is needed towards formation of seminarians, education of orphan children, formation of seminarians, formation of women’s self help groups, development of the rural community pastoral activities, formation of small Christian communities and many more. Please be as generous as your means permit. Thank you and God bless!
