REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD A MINDSET OF SERVICE There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of righteousness that Abraham practices. Then, in his letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay attention to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I present to God and others in my life? Copyright © J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, especially on those days when we dream of air conditioning and wave any available paper to stir the air. Yet we persist in gathering, even with so many breaks from the usual routines. We distance ourselves not only from routines, but from schedules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contemplative days. We see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgotten places. We have more leisure than any people before in the history of the world, and we need it because our lives are so care-worn and tiring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food with our fingers. We see how beautiful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah practice hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. During the summer months, God practices hospitality in return, inviting us into a season of celebration. 26 Tháng Bảy—Thánh Gioankim và Thánh Anna Trong Kinh Thánh, các thánh sử Mátthêu và Luca cung cấp cho chúng ta phả hệ của Ðức Giêsu. Các ngài đi ngược trở về tổ tiên dòng họ của Người chỉ để chứng minh rằng Ðức Giêsu là cực điểm của các lời hứa trọng đại. Nhưng bên ngoại của Ðức Giêsu thì bị lãng quên, chúng ta không có một dữ kiện gì về các đấng sinh thành ra Ðức Maria. Ngay cả tên Gioankim và Anna cũng xuất phát từ một truyền thuyết được viết lại sau khi Ðức Giêsu về trời khoảng hơn một thế kỷ. Tuy nhiên, đức tính anh hùng và thánh thiện của các ngài được suy đoán từ bầu khí của toàn thể gia tộc Ðức Maria. Dù chúng ta dựa trên truyền thuyết về thời kỳ thơ ấu của Ðức Maria hoặc suy đoán từ các dữ kiện trong Phúc Âm, Ðức Maria là một thể hiện của biết bao thế hệ những người siêng năng cầu nguyện mà chính ngài là một người đắm chìm trong các truyền thống đạo đức của người Do Thái. Các đức tính nổi bật của Ðức Maria khi ngài thi hành các quyết định, khi liên lỉ cầu nguyện, khi trung thành với quy luật tôn giáo, khi bình tĩnh trước những khủng hoảng và khi tận tâm với người bà con -- tất cả những điều này cho thấy một gia tộc khắng khít, yêu thương nhau biết nhìn đến các thệ hệ tương lai trong khi vẫn duy trì truyền thống tốt đẹp của quá khứ. Thánh Gioankim và Thánh Anna -- dù những tên tuổi này có thật hay không -- đã đại diện cho một chuỗi thế hệ của những người trung tín thi hành bổn phận, kiên trì sống đức tin để tạo nên một bầu khí thuận tiện cho sự giáng trần của Ðấng Thiên Sai, nhưng họ vẫn âm thầm không ai biết đến. * Lời Bàn : Ðây là "ngày lễ của các ông bà". Nó nhắc nhở cho các ông bà về trách nhiệm của họ là phải thiết lập gia phong cho các thế hệ tương lai: Họ phải làm sống lại các truyền thống và trao truyền cho con cháu. Nhưng ngày lễ này cũng có ý nghĩa cho các thế hệ trẻ. Nó nhắc nhở người trẻ rằng cái nhìn chín chắn, giầu kinh nghiệm của người già là sự khôn ngoan không nên coi thường hoặc bỏ qua. * Lời Trích : "... Gia đình là nền tảng của xã hội. UNA MENTALIDAD DE SERVICIO Hay varios viajes, entregas y visitas que pasan en las lecturas de hoy. En el libro del Génesis, Abraham atiende las necesidades de los tres viajeros misterio-sos. La respuesta del salmo, celebra la justicia que Abraham practica. Entonces, en su carta a los colo-senses, san Pablo describe su propio ministerio co-mo algo que es para darse como servicio: él, admi-nistrador de Dios, trae la palabra de Dios a su comu-nidad. Finalmente, el Evangelio de Lucas, comparte la historia bien conocida de Marta y María, y la mane-ra diferente como recibieron en su casa a Jesús. En medio de todo este trajinar, se nos invita a poner atención en las formas que atendemos las necesida-des de los demás. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE América es un continente nacido del mestizaje que tomó a los europeos, los indígenas y los africanos para engendrar algo nuevo. Normalmente pensamos en el mestizaje de sangre que produjo nuevas razas latinoamericanas. Pero también existe el mestizaje cultural que produce nuevos elementos latinoameri-canos. Uno de estos es el sarape, hijo de la tilma pre-colombina y el manto español. Este mestizaje en tela tiene sus principios en el siglo XVIII con una prolifera-ción de talleres en Zacatecas, Saltillo y otros lugares. Esta cobija colorida, de algodón o lana, fue desarro-llada para añadir color y belleza a los charros de si-glos pasados. A través de la historia el sarape ha sido usado por vaqueros, jinetes, soldados y revolucionarios. Hoy día el sarape, jorongo, frazada, gabán o cobija se ha convertido en símbolo de tradición mexicana y se en-cuentra decorando hogares, restaurantes e iglesias. México no es el único país que ha desarrollado un mestizaje en tela, también Guatemala, Colombia, El Salvador y otros más tienen sus telas y tapetes parti-culares que mezclan los colores y los diseños para celebrar el talento y la creatividad del mestizaje lati-noamericano.—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
