A.M.D.G. Dear Parishioners,

The 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time always seems to fall in the middle of things. Three years ago it came just after Pope Francis’ release of “Laudato Si;” in 2012, it came as we awaited the Supreme Court’s “verdict” on the “Affordable Care Act.” Both documents pleased some more than others. Our own circumstances in the Church and the world have their own share of gravitas and drama. As paradoxical as it may seem, Jesus today teaches us to focus on the eternal by means of his life twice “interrupted.” The context is: “God did not make death,” and its content is: “actions speak louder than words.” Jesus was teaching when interrupted by Jairus’ re-quest, and then within this ministry, interrupted by the wom-an touching his clothing. Funny, isn’t it, when life and death are on the line, we don’t worry about what others think? Jairus begs Jesus “come lay hands on (his daughter) that she may get well and live.” There is no precedent for this in the Hebrew Scriptures, so it seems Jairus’ love gave him a prophetic insight into Jesus’ identity and mission. The un-named woman too, “who had heard about Jesus” breaks all the taboos of her time to “touch his clothes and be cured.” Finally, when Jesus returns to Jairus’ request, he raises his daughter with a personal touch and a personal word “koum.” Now that it is our turn, let us not be distracted by scandal in the Church or in political discourse in the world, but see these ‘interruptions” as opportunities to remember our own first encounter with Jesus. Let us confess: “There but for the grace of God go you and I, worshipping the crea-ture rather than the creator; promoting death and calling it health care; forgetting how much we have been forgiven when tempted to judge others.” Now that it is our turn, let us follow the example of today’s heroes of faith, and prostrate ourselves before Jesus, present in the Holy Eucharist, and be touched by his love! Let us in turn touch others with the love of Jesus, the only “love stronger than death.” Our Di-vine Mercy prayer group meets on the second and fourth Fridays at 7 PM, and a retreat on July 20-22, and you are invited to renew your encounter with Jesus! Let us pray.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Fred The Parish Office will be closed on July 4th.

Evangelization: Priests and their Pastoral Ministry That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori style religious education program that brings children closer to God through age appropriate, hands-on activities and independent learning. With the help of the Missionaries of Charity, we plan on starting this program here at St. Anthony this September with 3-6 year olds (Level 1). This will not replace the current PSR Sunday School program for 3-6 year olds, but will be offered as an alternative for interested families. At this time, our main goals are connecting with children and families interested in participating in CGS, and gathering donations to help offset the start-up costs for the program. For those interested in making a financial contribution, you can donate online via Faith Direct or add an envelope to an upcoming collection basket with a note to support CGS. For more info, email the St. Anthony’s Moms Group at: [email protected] or fill out a flyer at the back of the church and leave it in the box labeled CGS. Thank you!

Two Hearts Devotion Come Adore the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary We pray for Her protection and intercession as we continue to storm Heaven for the healing of our Families, our Country and the World. Let

us put on our armor of CARE in a spirit of reparation as Mother Mary leads us to the Most Sacred Heart of Her Son, Jesus. We are not fighting flesh and blood but principalities of darkness. Remember that CARE means: Confession, Adoration, Rosary, Eucharist, the pillars of our faith that Our Lord provided for us over 2,000 years ago and which remain vital for our salvation! Rosary begins First Friday at 8:30pm with Mass at 9pm, prayers, Adoration and Confessions. First Saturday Mass is at 12:15 a.m. Join us and receive the abundance of grace available.

Proper Summer Attire at Mass Dressing for Mass is simply a matter of showing proper respect, not only for God, but for others around you. Remember the days when we wore our “Sunday best,” our finest outfits, to Mass? Dress codes at Mass have certainly relaxed over the years. With the warm weather months in D.C., it is particularly important that we dress appropriately and modestly for Mass. Here are some pointers to follow for modest and proper Mass attire during the summer months in Church: ❀ Hemlines on dresses and skirts fall at or just above the knee ❀ Hemlines on shorts fall near the knee (please no short-shorts) ❀ Shoulders and midriffs are covered ❀ Necklines are modest – not low-cut; no cleavage please ❀ No beachwear – (swimsuits, swim trunks) ❀ No muscle tee-shirts or tank tops ❀ No exposed undergarments

Summer Organ Recital Series at the Basilica The Basilica of the Nat’l Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to their 2018 Summer Organ Recital Series in the Great Upper Church. A recital will take place every Sunday in the month of July at 6pm. The series features Andrew Vu of Washington, DC (July 1); Charles Boyd Tompkins of Greenville, SC (July 8); Virgil Barkauskas of Melville, NY (July 15), Roland Voit of Hagen, Germany (July 22); and Jonathan William Moyer of Cleveland, OH (July 29). The recitals are open to the public and no tickets or reservations are required.

Holy Land Festival On Saturday, July 14th, the Franciscan Monastery will host the Holy Land Festival from 11am-5pm. Experience the Holy Land in DC with Middle Eastern food and authentic Holy Land vendors. Enjoy a musical performance by the Magnificat School from Jerusalem. Take part in guided tours of the historic church, catacombs, and lush gardens. Presentations by Nat’l Geographic, Bethlehem University, Holy Family Hospital, and a special talk by the Franciscan friars on the Franciscans’ 800 years in the Holy Land, along with Arabic writing, face painting, and much more.
