(Stotram by Sri Rudran about SrI lakshmi nrusimhan)

INTRODUCTION TO SRI MANTRA RAAJA PADA STOTRAM:

SrI Nrusimhan has many mantrams that assure us our protection from all afflictions. Mantram has been defined as "mananAm traayatE iti mantra:". Mantram is defined here as that on recitation and japam protects the one who recites it. Among the many mantrams associated with Sri Nrusimhan , the One revered as "Mantra Raajan" is the most powerful one. It was created by the Sarvajn~an, Sri Rudran (Sankaran) and is housed in ISvara samhitai as Mantra Raaja pada stotram.

This mantram is also known as Sri NrusimhAnutup Mantram and is set in anushtup meter, which always has 32 aksharams. Sri Rudran, who is omniscient has assembled these 32 aksharams in to 12 padams and housed each padam into a slOkam and presented it as a stOtram to Lord Narasimhan.

In this stOtram, Rudran makes it clear that Sri Nrusimha BhagavAn is MahA VishNu sabdavAchyan. Rudran pays tribute to Lord Narasimhan as the owner of all the wealth (vibhUtis) in the world represented as Sentient and insentient. With the conviction that Lord Narasimhan is the Sarva Seshi (Uncontested Supreme Master of All ), Sri Rudran performs SaraNAgati at the sacred feet of SrI Lakshmi Nrusimhan.

The Mantra Raaja Pada StOtram can be recited by all during the three sandhyaa kaalams of the day and on days in which the constellation of Swaati is in ascendance. Once one is received as upadEsam from a SadAcAryan, the NrusimhAnushtup mantram can be used for Mantra Japam during PradOsha Kaalam. The phalans arising from the japam of this mantram are many:

"smaraNAt pApagnam", destroyer of all sins by sheer recall of His name spelled out in the Mantra Raaja Pada stOtram

"krUra grahai pIDitAnAm abhaya pradam", it provides fearlessness for those tormented by fierce navagrahams

Driving away all ghosts and goblins as well as all physical illness and taapa trayams.

blessing one with what is desired as boons (VaancitArtha pradhAyakam) and

making us objects of His limitless kaaruNyam (apAra KaruNaa Sindu) and accepting our SaraNAgati for Moksham.

He shook the world with His ear shattering garjanam (viSvaaNDam ninAda trasta:). aNDam, BrahmaaNDam shook from that rare and loud roar.

When HiraNya Kasipu hit the stambham and asked his son if his Lord was there, Lord Narasimhan jumped out of that pillar with a rare scream that shattered the ears of HiraNya Kasipu (karNau samAcUrNayan gOra: tava rava: abhut). This sound was never heard before by anyone and shook the heart of HiraNyan with an indescribable shaking and made Brahma Devan shudder at His Aasanam at Satya lOkam (daitya hrdayE kaScana kampa: sampapAta; ambhOjabhUrvishTarAt calita:)

Meaning and Commentary:

adiyEn bows before that great warrior (MahA Veeran), Lord Narasimhan, who tore into shreds HiraNyakasipu, the son of Diti dEvi and KaSyapar. He tore the limbs of the offending HriraNyan by tearing his flesh with the tip of His powerful nails alone. HiranyaN's boons from the itara dEvatAs that assured him of all kinds of powers and immunity against being killed by any one failed totally. Before the great Veera Narasimhan, the power of all those boons melted away like dew at Sunrise; Lord Narasimhan did not need any weapons to destroy HiraNyan; He just used His sharp nails to tear HiraNyan apart.

Additional Comments:

HiraNyan's boons gave him a status of indestructibility against all kinds of dangers from humans or animals; He could not be killed during the day or night. He could not be killed inside or outside a house. He could not be killed by the living or the dead. Rudran sums this extraordinary protection gained by HiraNyan through his mighty penance to please the devAs as: "sarvai: (by all) avadhyatAm praptam (attained indestructibility)". This son of Diti DEvi (Diti sutan) thought that these boons protected him against all (sarvai:) dangers that could lead to his death. He felt therefore indestructible (avadhyan). These boons (sabalaugham) gave him a sense of security and made him fear nothing or nobody.

Our Lord Narasimhan took a form, which was neither human nor animal; Above His neck, He had the face of a Lion (Simham) and below the body of a man (Naran). He killed HiraNyan neither during the day time nor night time but destroyed him during sandyA kAlam, which is neither day nor night. Our Lord Killed HiraNyan on the steps of the palace, which is neither inside nor outside the house of HiraNyan. Our Lord killed HiraNyan neither with lifeless weapons nor any living thing but He used His nails that has no life of its own and yet it was alive in the sense that it grows. All these boons and their protections offered by the itara dEvatAs were bypassed by the MahA Veeran Lord Narasimhan this way and His avatAra Kaaryam was fulfilled.

Commentary:

The MundakOpanishad Vaakyam (2.2.11) is an echo of the thought contained in

this slOkam: "tmev ÉaNtmnuÉait sv¡ tSy Éasa svRimd< ivÉait - tamEva bhAntam

The previous mantram of this Upanishad (2.2.10) states that the Brahman is the light of lights (jyOtishAm jyOti:). It is that which the knowers of the ParamAtman (Lord Narasimhan) realize.

Among the dvAdaSa (Twelve) nAmAs, the first nAmA is saluting His JyOtir-maya tattvam: "pratamastu mahAa-jvAlO". The twelfth nAmA is: "dvAdaSa: karuNA nidhi".

All devotees of Parama-Purushan Narasimhan seek His sacred feet of their refuge for protection. adiyEn follows this group of blessed PrapannAs and perform SaraNaagati at Your feet with the bhAvam (mood) of Your Servant. Rudran states that He is conducting himself as the servant to Lord Narasimha and as One who has performed Prapatti to Him as His Master

Commentary:

PrahlAdan had atyanta Bhakti to the Lord. That is why the food mixed with severe poison became medicine to PrahlAdan on consumption. The angry elephants could not hurt him through their trampling. He could not sink, when he was thrown into the ocean with a stone tied to him. The most poisonous serpents could not harm him with their bites. He could not be killed by the tridents aimed at him. He had his mind focused on You and hence nothing could harm him
