WE CELEBRATE BAPTISM: Baptisms are customarily performed on Sunday at 2:30 P.M. Prior arrangements with the parish priest or deacon must be made as far in advance as possible. WE CELEBRATE MARRIAGE: In order to prepare adequately for the life-long commitment to the Sacrament and to arrange to participate in a Marriage Preparation Program, we ask that you make arrangements with the priest or deacon of your choice at least six months prior to the date of the marriage. Because of the Sunday Mass schedule, Nuptial Masses are normally celebrated on Friday evening or Saturday. Weddings should take place in the proper parish of the bride or groom. Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.sacredheartsofjesusandmary.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. The Corpus Christi Procession

In the thirteenth century, a Belgian nun by the

name of Juliana had a vision: she saw the full moon silvery

and radiant except for one dark spot. The meaning of the

vision was revealed to her: the moon was the Church’s

liturgical year, the dark spot a missing feast in honor of the

Blessed Sacrament. Today’s feast of Corpus Christi—the

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—grew from

Juliana’s vision.

On this feast, many parishes observe the traditional

Corpus Christi procession, giving honor to the Eucharist

by carrying this greatest treasure out of the safety of our

churches and into our streets. At the end of every Mass we

are not just let out, we are sent forth, strengthened by the

Eucharist, to be the Body of Christ in the world. The

Corpus Christi procession is the dismissal writ large! We

take Jesus with us, not only in our hearts, but carried in our

midst and exposed in a monstrance. It is a public

profession of faith and a blessing of the world. Jesus walks

with us on these streets that we walk day after day, among

those who know him but yearn to know him better, and

among those who do not know him. The Eucharist is a

The Class of 2011 was presented to the pastors and community of OLH in a special liturgy of Thanksgiving and commencement exercise at St. Rosalie’s Church in Hampton Bays. SILENCE BEFORE MASS BY Paul Turner

Silence is sacred. No words can adequately express the mystery of God. Everything we try to say falls short. In quiet, we can sense God’s presence even more deeply than in sound. At designated times of the Mass, we fall silent to offer prayers, to reflect on the Scripture or to thank God for the Eucharist. But “even before the celebration itself, it is commendable that silence be observed in the church, in the sacristy, in the vesting room, and in adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred action in a devout and fitting manner” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 45). Many sounds precede Mass. At home and in the car, you may have the television or radio on, or you may be conversing with family and friends about many things. At church, in the minutes before the Mass begins, you might hear people greeting people, someone leading a rosary, musicians tuning their instruments, cantors rehearsing the psalm, or coins plunking in the poor box. The organist might play a prelude, or the song leader might rehearse a hymn with you. All these sounds serve some purpose, and they help prepare us for the Eucharist. But some time of silence beforehand helps everyone enter the Mass devoutly. In silent prayer, we think about the role we are to play, the songs we will sing, the prayers we will offer, the Scriptures we will hear, the sacrifice we make, the service we give to our neighbor, and the presence of Jesus Christ, who comes to us in sacrament to nourish us at this Mass and throughout the week. His holiness renders us speechless.

He felt that boys and girls around the ages of six or seven should have this privilege of carrying Jesus within their bodies. Wasn’t that nice of Pope Pius X to do that for children? The Pope was following the words of Jesus when he said in the Bible “Let the little children come too. Do not keep them away.” Reflection Questions: What are some of the things that you have given your parents so that they can remember you and be proud of you? Think of the pictures you have in your home that help you remember your brothers or sisters or grandparents who have given you something special and who love you. When I go to church do I listen and hear what the priest is saying? This is my BODY, this is my BLOOD. Take and eat. When you go back into church today pay close attention to what the priest is saying. You wouldn’t want to miss that special time when Jesus comes into the bread and wine. SUMMER BEGINS!

Many of you will be going on vacation this summer. Here is a prayer to keep you safe.

Loving God, source of all life and joy, Be with us as we travel, make us respectful of those we meet, grateful for those who offer hospitality, patient and kind to one another, alert to the wonders of the world, and confident in new situations. Remind us daily of your loving presence, and bring us safely home. Amen.

June 26, 2011 Opening Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for making it possible for me to receive your body and blood in Holy Communion. Thank you for wanting to be a part of my life here on earth. Please help me to always respect and appreciate your coming in the Eucharist. Amen Gospel: John 6:51-58 Reflection: Many times you have brought home for your parents something special that you have made in school or you bought your mother or dad a birthday gift. What do they do with it? I will guess that Mom put the drawing on the refrigerator or put that special birthday gift on a shelf where she will see it often. These things remind your parents of your love for them and they think of you when they see that special something. What do you do when someone special gives you a gift? I bet you ei-ther put it in your pocket or keep it safe in your bed-room where you can hold it, look at it or play with it. It reminds you of the person who gave it to you and you feel good about it. Jesus too wanted to give us something of himself be-fore he ascended to heaven after his resurrection. So at the Last Supper that he had with his friends and apostles. What did he give them so that we could re-member him? He changed the bread and wine that was on the table into his BODY and BLOOD and said TAKE AND EAT, THIS IS MY BODY. Then he took the cup and said TAKE AND DRINK, THIS IS MY BLOOD. Do this in remembrance of me. Remember hearing these words at Mass? The priest says these same words at each Mass and Jesus changes the bread and wine into his body and blood so that we can receive him into our bodies. Jesus wants to be very close to us always be-cause he loves us very much and wants us to remember him. Many years ago children had to be around 14 years old to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, but a very holy Pope called Pope Pius X changed all that and permitted younger children to receive Jesus’ body and blood.

Feast of Corpus Christi

(The Body and Blood of Christ)

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi commemorates the institution of the Holy

Eucharist, paralleling Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) commemorating

Our Lord's institution of the Eucharist. Corpus Christ was introduced in the

late 13th century to encourage the faithful give special honor to the institution of the Holy Eucharist to the

Blessed Sacrament. The official title of this Solemnity was changed in 1970 to The Body and Blood of

Christ (Latin: Sollemnitas Sanctissimi Corporis et Sanguinis Christi); and it is still on the Roman Missal’s

official Calendar for the universal Church on Thursday after Trinity Sunday; however, where it is not a day

of obligation (as in the United States) it is usually celebrated on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday.

Corpus Christi became a mandatory feast in the Roman Church in 1312. But nearly a century

earlier, Saint Juliana of Mont Cornillon, promoted a feast to honor the Blessed Sacrament. From early age

Juliana, who became an Augustinian nun in Liége, France, in 1206, had a great veneration for the Blessed

Sacrament, and longed for a special feast in its honor. She had a vision of the Church under the appearance

of the full moon having one dark spot, which signified the absence of such a solemnity. She made known

her ideas to the Bishop of Liége, Robert de Thorete, to the Dominican Hugh who later became cardinal

legate in the Netherlands, and to Jacques Panaléon, at the time Archdeacon of Liége and who later became

Pope Urban IV. Bishop Robert de Thorete ordered that the feast be celebrated in his diocese.

Pope Urban IV later published the Bull Transiturus (September 8, 1264), in which, after having

extolled the love of Our Savior as expressed in the Holy Eucharist, ordered the annual celebration of Corpus

Christi on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. More than four decades later, Pope Clement V published a

new decree which embodied Urban IV's decree and ordered the adoption of the feast at the General Council

of Vienna (1311). Pope John XXII, successor of Clement V, urged this observance.

The processions on Corpus Christi to honor the Holy Eucharist were not mentioned in the decrees,

but had become a principal feature of the feast's celebration by the faithful, and became a tradition

throughout Europe. These processions were endowed with indulgences by Popes Martin V and Eugene IV.

Lord Jesus Christ,

we worship You living among us

in the Sacrament of Your Body and Blood.

May we offer to our Father in heaven

a solemn pledge of undivided love.

May we offer to our brothers and sisters

a life poured out in loving service of that kingdom

where You live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
