It’s human nature for us to want places of honor. Yet Jesus

challenges us to do the opposite: to seek the “lowest

place.” While many in the world compete for worldly pres-

tige and honor, Jesus is asking Christians to outdo one an-

other in the practice of true humility.

Building Renovation Raffle Tickets

and turned in asap! If you have tickets checked out that you haven’t been able to sell – turn them in as well. Someone else can have a chance to sell them or we can sell them at the Fall Supper.

RELIGIOUS ED: if you feel called to volunteer as a

teacher this year we are looking for grades K-6, 8th, 10th grade and Confirmation Assistant. We are

also looking for volunteers to help with the carpool. If you are interested in teaching or carpooling please contact the parish office.

Sacred Heart Pastoral Council Notes - Aug. 19 Mtg. 1. Quite a number of students attended camps or went on a mis-

sion trip. Summer Youth Group averaged about 8 at each gathering. Workshop for youth workers in Crookston on Sept. 14

2. RE to start after Fall Supper. Seeking some catechists and helpers. Hoping to arrange after-school transportation through the school.

3. Caleb will work with Fr. John to do a demo before or at end of Mass online options such as Formed, parish website and for-mation on the Mass.

4. Bibles studies on Luke and Acts plus faith-sharing for adults on the Sunday readings are available to all. Parish is open to ideas for speakers, short missions, etc.

5. Missionary Disciples - having each PC or other parish leader-ship groups do assessment of where parish is at with evangeli-zation and outreach. We took 20 minutes to do this. Parish offers quite a few options for activity and outreach such as the Fair Food Booth and Fall Dinner, however could do much bet-ter on hospitality and welcome to new persons. Also needs work on building a culture of openness for faith-sharing. Good music at liturgies. Need to help all to encounter/experience Jesus and not just know about him.

6. Diocesan Convocation on the above on Sat. Oct. 5 in EGF -- open to all people - will invite and also promote to all interest-ed through bulletin, etc.

7. Sacred Heart feast-day not well attended - maybe move to Sunday next year.

8. Mt. St. Benedict Centennial Mass and celebration at 2 PM on same day as Fall Dinner -- will send $200 gift as sign of appre-ciation for their years of ministry.

9. Sat. Oct.12 -- Confirmation at Roseau. 10. Need to do renewal for all liturgical ministers but will wait until

after construction is finished. 11. Looked over a list of possible committees to oversee different

events or tasks in the parish -- added one for outreach to those who are ill or in need. Some tasks or events are already covered such as funeral lunches and Valentine’s social.

12. Food Booth at fair went well - good outreach with shirts and signs - slightly more profit from food and raffle.

13. Fall Supper - Sept. 15 --will be changed to take-out with option for sitting and eating outside -- looking into blocking off street in front of rectory for this.

14. MCCL Fall Tour info night - hosted by 1st Bapt. On Tues. Sept. 24 - 7-8 PM.

15. Building Project going forward though a little behind schedule. Raffle is close to goal of $10,000.

16. Fr. John will email parish survey from last fall to all council to review - will discuss at next meeting.

17. DAA still about $600 short of goal -- need all parishioners to participate is support for the diocese whatever the amount. All helps - can’t expect others to cover each one’s responsibility.

18. Annual presentation on stewardship. Fr. will look for speaker. 19. Next meeting -- Mon. Oct 7 at 5:15 PM.

St. Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist Celebrated August 29th

Herod Antipas smiled and

nodded with approval. His

step-daughter Salome*

swayed and twirled in front

of him and his birthday-

party guests, her graceful

figure filling them with

longing. Her performance

done, Herod and the guests

applauded. What a dance!

Inflamed by his senses and

the mood of the moment,

Herod cried, "Ask me what you want--up to half my

kingdom--and it is yours!" And he swore a great oath to

confirm his promise.

"Give me now the head of John the Baptizer on a

platter!" said the girl.

Looking around at his guests, he saw only one thing.

If he was to save face, he must fulfill his promise. He

ordered the execution. According to a long-standing

tradition, John was beheaded on this day, August 29,

probably around the year A.D. 28.

What happened to John's head, we do not know. His

disciples came and buried the body. Remains alleged to

be his were later taken to Alexandria, Egypt and placed

A letter from Mark Miller Dear Sacred Heart Parishioners, I hope this letter finds you all with faith-filled hearts...and with the joy of a building project well underway. I wanted to write you to let you know why I was unable to pay more visits to Sacred Heart this summer. The reason I was un-able to visit more frequently was because I had the wonderful opportunity to study Spanish abroad in Guatemala for 10 weeks. It was a great and challenging summer filled with many experi-ences ranging from long periods of studying, visiting the place of Stanley Rother's martyrdom, visiting the group of DOC pil-grims (I think 7 were from Sacred Heart), hiking a Volcano, and participating in various Eucharistic processions (they each last-ed at least an hour). I hope to one day be able to effectively spread the beautiful Gospel message in both English and Spanish to those in the Crookston Diocese. Although I have a long way to go in reach-ing the goal of spreading this message in both languages, I am grateful to have learned quite a bit while I was in Guatema-la, not just about the Spanish language, but about the culture, the faith, and the relationship I have with God and others. I pray all is well at the Sacred Heart Parish. I was blessed to stop in for only for a few hours before I left to Guatemala. I saw the process of construction was underway! Praise the Lord! I am excited to see the Church when the renovations are fin-ished. After spending a little time with my parents in Florida, I will be heading back to Seminary in Indiana at the end of August. In-cluding this year, I will have three more years left at Saint Meinrad. Then, God willing, I will be a priest.
