Christianity is forward-looking. Christians believe in the future. Something new is always happening in their lives. Conventionally, life is seen as an ascending curve topping out around the ages of forty or fifty. From then on, the curve irrevocably drops, vitality decreases, you get old and soon it is all over. For Christians, on the other hand, life is continuously ascending. The climax is the moment when we step over the threshold to eternal life. Death is not an end. Christians look at death as the gate into the indestructible life we have invisibly carried within us while on earth. The Christian view of death changes the view of life. July 14 ~ Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

"… heed the voice of the LORD, your God, and keep his commandments and statutes …,” Moses reminds us that the commandments are readily accessible. In fact, he goes on to say they are “already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out." Simply put - Love God, love your neighbor. Jesus presents that message in the familiar story of the Good Samaritan – a story with a universal message of love, mercy and kindness. The challenge is real. We need to trust that by God’s grace, we already have what we need to carry out his command.

Monthly Mass for the Sick The next Monthly Mass for the Sick, sponsored by the Mass for the Sick ministry of Sacred Heart/Our Lady Help of Christians Collaborative, will be on Monday, July 22, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady’s Church. Msgr. Dennis Sheehan, of the SH/OL Collaborative, will celebrate the Mass and Anointing of the Sick.

After refreshments, Tim McHale and the Boston Minstrels will entertain us with their joyful music. It promises to be a delightful, uplifting evening.

The evening is designed to bring joy, hope, and peace to those who are affected by illness, including family and friends. The Mass and program will both be held downstairs at Our Lady’s Church, located at 573 Washington Street in Newton. New Pastoral Associate: Welcome Nick Frega!

Nick Frega joined the collabo-rative staff on July 1 as a Pas-toral Associate, ministering primarily but not exclusively at Sacred Heart. Nick grew up in central Connecticut. He studied Religion and Politics at Fair-field University before going to earn an MA in Theology through the Echo program at the University of Notre Dame.

While studying for his MA, he lived in Christian commu-nity and ministered for two years near Tampa, Florida, in a variety of parish catechetical and pastoral roles. Then he spent around a year working at the Diocese of Rochester, NY, in a variety of parish support, ecumenical, and inter-religious roles. He is excited to join the community at Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s!

Collaborative Picnic

Our Annual Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s Collaborative Picnic this year will be Sunday, September 22, from 12:00pm to 3:00pm on the front lawn of Our Lady’s Church. All Are Welcome!

If you attended last year and enjoyed the day, please spread the word about our picnic to your neighbors and friends. We will supply hamburgers, hot dogs & ice cream; you supply soft drinks and any other foods your family will enjoy. If you would like to share a finger food dessert or salad with other people, bring it along; we will have tables set up for your items. Bring your blanket and chairs and enjoy an afternoon of fun; there will be games, races, pony rides and more. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help defray the expenses of the picnic, please make your check payable to “Our Lady’s” with “picnic” written on the memo line. Donations can be dropped in the collection baskets or mailed to the parish office.

Note: Grill will close at 2:30pm.

AEDs at Both Churches An AED -- Automated external defibrillator for heart emergencies is located in the central foyer of both churches. What should one do if someone is in need of medical attention that may be heart related? (1) Call 911 immediately. (2) Call out for medical personnel in the congregation -- we have loads of them – and follow their instructions. (3) Notify the priest. (4) If called for, use the AED – it is self-explanatory. Though a non-medical person can use it, please defer to any medical personnel as to its use. (5) Send someone to the doors of the church to keep an eye out for the Ambulance or Fire Dept. so that they can be guided directly to the person in need. (6) Pray to God for the health of the person.

I have a friend who is married and has three sons. He is a good and loving man but had

sternness born of suffering. One of his sons was a troublesome teenager – not bad, but testing

every boundary, much as his father had done. My friend always responded to his son’s antics

punitively. One day, my friend spoke to a friend of his, another father of teenagers, looking for

support. His friend told him, ‘I have one question for you. The way you answer it will

determine how you handle your son. This is the question: When you’re dead, do you want your

sons to remember you as being right or as having loved them?’

Jesus would like my friend’s friend, I think. Something similar is going on in today’s Gospel.

The scholar of the law asks Jesus a disingenuous question, for of course as a scholar he knew

the answer: ‘How do I inherit eternal life?’ Jesus turns the question back on him – ‘What is

written in the law?’ The scholar answers the same way Jesus answers the question – love God

and love your neighbor.

The lawyer presses on. ‘Well, who is my neighbor?’ Jesus’ example is compelling – a robbery

victim, left for dead on a lonely road – compelling for it is by no means unknown in that time

or place. The priest and the Levite (Levites would be akin to pastoral associates in our day)

acted rightly according to their norms. To deal with this bloodied, naked man would render

them unclean according to the Jewish law, and therefore unable to perform their duties at the

temple. On the other hand, no Jew would expect a Samaritan to help this man –and another

Samaritan would have applauded had he passed by.

This Samaritan, known forever as good, chose to love rather than be right according to the

customs of the time. His choice actually goes deeper. He chooses to be a friend, rather than

perpetuate being the enemy of Jews. He chooses to see this dying Jew as a friend, not an

enemy.

Jesus’ answer to the lawyer reflects a shift in the question – from ‘who is my neighbor?’ – to

‘are you willing to be a neighbor to everyone?’

The parable actually reveals that God, in Christ our Lord, has become the Samaritan who cares

for us in our uncared for state. Let us ask Jesus, as He comes to care for us in the Eucharist, to

help us always choose to be remembered for love as He is.

Ignatian Volunteer Corps New England Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) New England, a yearlong volunteer opportunity for women and men 50 years of age and better, is recruiting volunteers for the upcoming (September to June) year. Care for Creation: An Emergency Response to Climate Crisis

Faced with a climate emergency, the world must act immediately to mitigate global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid committing “a brutal act of injustice” on the poor and future generations, Pope Francis told a group of energy and oil executives and global investors, who in their own statement offered support for a price on carbon emissions.

Condiments Needed In July, we are collecting condiments for St. Francis House. Donations can be dropped off during the week

in the lower elevator lobby OR at weekend Masses in either the elevator lobby or the upper church foyer at Sacred Heart.

Keep Your Loved Ones Connected!

The Ministry of Care members gathered during the week and would like to remind parishioners that we can visit, bring Communion to, and send cards and the weekly bulletin to homebound parishioners, keeping them in our prayers and keeping them lovingly connected to the parish. Monthly greeting cards are sent. If you think you or someone else would enjoy receiving a card from the parish, please contact the parish office and let us know!

Religious Education News Registration forms for returning CCD families will be sent out in early July. If you are a new family joining us, new registration forms will be available for download from the Sacred Heart website also by early July and are accepted all summer long. If you are interested in Sacramental Preparation, please remember that Religious Education in Grades 1 and 2 need to be completed in order to receive First Communion in May at the end of Grade 2. Confirmation is also a 2 year preparation usually completed in Grade 9 and 10. Early registration is encouraged! Please pick up a name of a Confirmation student at the entrances of the church and pray for them along with your other intentions this summer. May the Holy Spirit find a home in their hearts on Confirmation day: October 13th. A Word from Fr. Michael Three years ago, in the middle of doctoral studies at Boston College, Father John welcomed me to join the Newton collaborative. I remember that he told me that I would like the people. Happily, that has been the case, and I feel very grateful to you.

Living among you for the past few years has taught me much about being both a priest and a monk. This has been a real-world education! Since I have also finished my formal studies, I will be returning to Minnesota. But I leave feeling very grateful to the people here – thank you! And I promise to keep you in my prayers.

Our Lady’s News Religious Education Registration Is Now Open

Registration for the 2018-2019 Religious Education Programs has now begun in early July. Registration forms have been mailed home to all returning students. New students are asked to download a registration form from our website: https://www.sholnewton.org/religious-education-at-our-ladys

Please note for First Penance and First Holy Communion: Preparation for these Sacraments is a two-year program. Although Religious Education begins in Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2 are required before First Communion.

Please note for Confirmation: Preparation is a two-year program! High school students who wish to celebrate Confirmation must enroll in the preparation program for two consecutive years, typically - but not always - Grades 9 and 10. In addition, all rising 9th graders and any new 10th graders (typically Catholic school students) must contact Kristina over the summer to schedule a one-on-one introductory meeting that includes at least one parent.
