APRIL 26, 2020 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Dear Parishioners,

“Were not our hearts burning within us as He (Jesus) spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32) That question is at the conclusion of the Gospel for the weekend – the “Third Sunday of the Easter Season”.

As was the case on the previous two Sundays, this Gospel gives yet another account of the events of the first Easter Sunday. This is the story of the encounter between Jesus and two of His disciples on the road to the village of Em-maus. This took place in the late afternoon as those disci-ples were approaching their home village and encoun-tered Jesus whom they did not at first recognize. They entered into a conversation with Him as Jesus questioned them about the events that had taken place in Jerusalem in the previous two days.

As it was getting near the customary time for the evening meal, they invited Jesus to join them and asked Him to say a prayer of blessing prior to starting the meal. Jesus blessed the bread, using the same words that the apostles had reported to them that He had spoken as He instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist three days earlier on Holy Thursday. Jesus then disappeared from their midst and returned to Jerusalem and the story about which we read in last Sunday’s Gospel took place.

Today’s life changing quotation “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” is so helpful and inspiring to us not only as we continue throughout this year’s Easter season, but also very pointedly as we face the unique chal-lenges of this particular moment in time. The deaths, anxie-ty, and uncertainty caused by the ongoing Coronavirus weigh all of us down, but our Faith in the Lord’s presence continues to bring us peace, hope, and perseverance if we turn to Him in prayer and seek that help.

The current moment also helps us to put our lives in per-spective - regardless of how old - - or young we may be. For people of Faith who have faced problems and turned to the Lord in prayer, we know that His grace got us through those times, as it will continue to do in the present crisis.

I invite you again to take advantage of the fact that the Church is being left unlocked each day between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. and to stop in for some quiet prayer and re-flective time. I guarantee that you will experience the Lord’s peace, needed by all of us at this time.

Jesus Himself has invited us to do this as we can read in St. Matthew’s Gospel (MT 11:28) “Come to me all you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will give you rest”.

That passage also inspired St. Paul in his letter to the Ro-mans to encourage them and believers of all time to persevere in the midst of trials and to be confident of God’s comforting grace: “If you have hope, this will make

you cheerful, do not give up when trials come and keep on praying” (Romans 12:12)

Our taking the time to accept the invitation from Jesus mentioned above (Matthew 11:28) and to see the result of it in St. Paul’s message to the Romans’ will definitely give us the strength that we need at this moment in time that none of us will ever forget.

“Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32) – just as relevant in April, 2020 as on that April afternoon so many centuries ago in the Em-maus story.

I am praying for you each day and again want to thank all who have continued to help the parish financially during these weeks of the suspension of the Masses. The enve-lopes that you have mailed, the donations dropped into our mailbox and your continued participation in the “On-line Giving” option are truly helping us in this challeng-ing moment.
