If you have questions concerning the finances of the parish please contact Fr. Tom directly. The Finance Committee discussed ways to save and cut expenses. One is that the parish will no longer purchase
donuts for Sunday Morning Mass, but Fr. Bala is arranging for parishioners to provide them. Also, since we have a rectory now which is in need of repairs (see the parish council agenda or the stewardship agenda, both available from Fr. Tom), we will have two different building fund collections: The Restoration Collection and the General Building Fund Collection. These collections will alternate every other month. The Restoration Fund will be used solely for the historic church and offices. This is the collection for the coming weekend. We will have a different collection called the General Building Fund, which will be used for general maintenance, mainly for the rectory at this time which is in need of new flooring and lighting for the laundry room, living room, and bedroom. The bathroom needs to be remodeled also. The November Second Building Fund Collection coming Nov. 4 will be for the Restoration of the Church and its needs. The December Second Building Fund Collection will be for the general maintenance directed to the remodel of the rectory. Priest Clergy Days November 7th, 8th and 9th, there will be no 12:10pm Mass at ICC on those dates. The only Masses offered during that time will be a 12:10pm Mass November 7th and a 5:30pm Mass November 9th at Sacred Heart Cathedral, with a 9:00am Mass November 8th at Catholic Schools of Fairbanks (Holy Family Chapel) for those that would like to attend.

Special Thanks to the generous young soldiers from Eielson Air Force base who came bearing gifts. They brought large individual bags of snacks & they gave
some heavy socks, gloves & scarves. As you know, the meal the guests receive on Sunday in the SK is the last they will eat until Monday morning at Stone Soup from 7:30 to 9:00AM. This extra is a God sent food & winter warmth, from their hearts of hearts. Later I thought of the special “care packages” deployed soldiers appreciated receiving from home & from the USO/Red Cross. There is something very divine when you know you are being remembered - when you are far from home or lonely & miserable – regardless the circumstances. The act of kindness is huge. Always Needing Volunteers: Of course, I rarely miss an opportunity to invite potentials to volunteer & to help serve on the weekend. Eielson AFB said they would recruit others & see us in the near future. The soldiers seemed surprised by the number of people we serve. In addition, they seemed impressed by all the thanks giving & God blessings, from our friends - with smiles & warmth. Lastly, there was not enough individual bags for everyone, so the guests got busy sharing items with each other. Praying With Our Lady Of Fatima: There are so many types of war waged in the world today. Our work is laid-out for us in the requests of Mary & Jesus Christ. Mother Mary said, “Do what He tells you.” And, in so many ways He requests us to “Love one another, as I have Loved you.” The simple acts of kindness go a long way to healing what is broken in the heart of man & the Sacred Heart of Jesus & the Immaculate Heart of Mary. All are especially soothed, by Loving acts toward one another. If we can
just remember, we are every day missionaries in the evangelical battle for souls. We encounter others & together prayerfully grow in the nature of Divine Love & Mercy, immersing ourselves more deeply into the perfect union with the Trinity & our Mother of Mercy into one soul. Together, we are asked to be quick in giving hope & strength to all those whom Jesus sends & to be the radiant Light & Love of Christ - bringing the Kingdom from Heaven to Earth. We have been asked to know, to love & to serve the Lord within the new covenant & to share the promises of Christ. We must ‘preach’ by action, with the power of unceasing hope & faith, the unconditional Love of Almighty God & forever teaching forgiveness & Mercy to those most in need. When Jesus appears before me in the disguise of the poor & His request is inconvenient - can I stop & see it is Him? How often have I forgotten what it is like to be poor, hungry, alone, abandoned & hopeless. Have I lost faith? How often have I had the door of someone’s heart closed in my face because I was an inconvenience? How often have I done this to another? Truly, I have seen the face of Christ in the people who cross my path – at the store, at church, walking along outside or in the Soup Kitchen. Uplifting friends, strangers, sad eyed, hopeless & quite full of pain – we recognize each other by our eye contact, our heart & give a knowing nod. We know the truth of our being – Jesus knows all & is teacher & in that, teaches His children. We understand the new covenant better – we are better being present within the Heart of Hearts, united & being a living prayer – we grow. We surround this place with peace & Love. May the ripple effect of Love all Mighty spread throughout the world. Holy Trinity, Mother Mary & Mighty Angels & Saints pray for us. Amen

Halloween will be here soon: “Hallows’ Eve” sounds like “Halloween,” and it should, because that’s where it came from: the eve, or vigil, of All Hallows, which is All Saints’. On All Souls’ Day the poor begged for food and promised to pray for the dead in return. Some would chant, “Soul! Soul! For a soul-cake! I pray, good misses a soul-cake – An apple or pear, a plum or a cherry, Any good thing to make us merry, One for Peter, two for Paul, Three for Him who made us all.” They called the little cakes they received “soul cakes”. Soul Cakes (Doughnuts) are a special November food. Their circular form symbolized the cycle of life, death, and rebirth: Seed Springs to life, grows, matures, produces its seed-bearing fruit, and dies and rises again as its seeds spring to life again, germinate, and emerge, closing the circle of life. The round cakes with the hole in the center, represents eternity. Today there are still cultures with people who visit a cemetery on All Hallows; not for spooky reasons, but for the same reason others do on Memorial Day, except that they have picnics, with the last flowers of the year.

The next Priest Clergy Days will take place November 7th, 8th, 9th and because we have been blessed with five new priests in our diocese, two from India, two from Nigeria, and one from Poland, we want to take the opportunity to welcome them
all in a social setting.
Parishioners from all parishes are invited to join us for Mass at 5:30pm followed by a welcome celebration in the social hall at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Thursday, November 9th. We ask that you bring a potluck dish of your choice to share, and take this opportunity to meet Fathers Kumar, Thomas, Aiden, Alphonsus, and Szymon and give them a warm Fairbanks welcome.

Why Be Catholic? Obedience! Jewish tradition recalls Moses and the ratifying of the Mosiac Covenant with God at the Passover Meal. Through this sacrificial meal of the lamb, God freed the people from their slavery to the Egyptians. After their freedom, God gave them a New Law. This New Law, Ten Commandments, was summed up with their prayer called The Great Shema. It was the Jewish Creed which stated: “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with your whole heart, and with your whole being, and with your whole strength. Take to heart these words which I command you today” (Dt 6:4).
Jesus teaches this prayer often. For this prayer was the Jewish Creed and should be our Creed also. Jews said this prayer upon waking and going to bed. They said this prayer as it was the foundation of their faith. Catholics today and all who profess Christianity are not only to pray this prayer; but most importantly live this prayer. This prayer is the highlighted in Jesus who dies on the Cross. Though He does not recite this prayer on the cross, He is exemplifying it: “He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him (Phil 2.8).
We are to live the same prayer!
Stewardship is a Labor of Love
Being a faithful steward is a labor of love. We endure the hardships and challenges as God’s way of strengthening and solidifying our commitment to Him. Many faithful people lose hope, however, and reject their faith when the journey with Jesus becomes difficult. As the two disciples running away to Emmaus, many Christians today run away from their faith for all sorts of reasons. Personality conflicts, neglect, embarrassments, wrong doing, even abuse and oppression occur in any and every organization, especially in the Church as we read in Exodus 22.20 “You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.” That is why the Lord tells us what to do and reveals the punishment if we do it. “My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword” (Ex 22:23). Ultimately people are messy and create nasty problems. Many wallow and revel in the ugliness of human corruption. Some promote it, others merely complain, but God expects us to solve it. That is why we sing, “I love you Lord, My Strength!” Faithful stewards rely on God’s strength when life is messy. It is a labor of love!
Love: Vertical or Horizontal
Love that is vertical seeks the sublime and the transcendent. Love that is horizontal seeks the sensible and the natural. Yet, today our world is confused about true love. Our human love that we have for places, things, pets, people, and products are reflections of God’s love. But our human love is so erratic and unequal that Jesus teaches us how to love. In the Book of Revelation, first we are warned, “I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor
cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth (Rev. 3:16). How graphic
can God get? If we do not have true love, if we are lukewarm in our commitment, God spews us out. - Love’s origin is not human, it is not erotic, it is not friendly, it is not even familial. These types of love as defined by Aristotle and popularized by C. S. Lewis are demonstrations of love. They illustrate and exemplify God Who is love. They are not love itself. We who are made in the image and likeness of God reflect Divine Love when we show fondness or friendliness to a person which is called Storge Love. We bond to our family members and become united in blood which is Philia Love. We become passionate and intimate in Eros Love. These are all horizontal loves. But Divine love is Agape Love which is the unconditional love God has for his people is vertical. We are to love with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind. Whatever we choose to love, we must love with our total being. That is we must completely commit. Jesus, therefore, teaches us Who – not What – we are to love. We are to love God first. Yet, St. John teaches, “If anyone says I love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar; whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 Jn 4:20). Love is not a feeling. It is a verb; it is an action. Love demands that we sacrifice for the other whom we see; so we ensure that we love the One whom we do not see. The greatest act of love then is to love our neighbor as Jesus teaches – the only commandment we need. He then demonstrated the commandment with his forgiveness on the cross. If we are to be a committed Christian we have to love like Christ: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten
son (Jn 3:16). And We are to love by giving our live and forgiving
our enemy!
