Sachertorte - A Celebrated Austrian Dessert
A celebrated and historic Austrian dessert, Sachertorte is one of the more famous dishes in Austrian cuisine. The dessert features two sheets of chocolate sponge cake separated by a thin layer of apricot jam. To complete the flavor, the cake is enclosed with a smooth, thick layer of dark chocolate icing. Sachertorte is a simple but elegant cake that has become widely available in Austria and other European countries since its conception.
Sachertorte - A Celebrated Austrian Dessert
Lauded as an impromptu creation, Sachertorte was first made in 1832 when the chef for Prince Wensel Metternich unexpectedly became ill. The chef instructed Franz Sacher, his 16-year-old apprentice, to make a dessert that wouldn’t dishonor the prince, and the apprentice’s cake has since remained a beloved Austrian dessert.
