sAA-Uk’s MIssIoN Is: ‘Enrich people’s lives through engagement and participation in tradition and contemporary South Asian Music and Dance’

Wow! What a amazing Spring and Summer, with everyone cycling, making music and dancing across Yorkshire

Now our charity is ready to take you through the Autumn and Winter seasons, bring a smile to your faces, stop you from hibernating and dreading the shorter days and cold dark nights.

This is the season to be jolly with so many rich and diverse festivals being celebrated as we all head back to school, college, university and work, after a hot summer break.

Happy belated Eid to everyone! Do look out for Navrattri, Deepawali (Diwali), Gurparb, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year, Uttarayan, Holi and many more festivals taking place between September and March 2015. (see learning and participation page 12-13)

At SAA-uk we continue to ‘Celebrate Women in the Arts’ through out Concert Series around Leeds. Kick starting with Jyoti Hegde on Rudra Veena defying the odds in a male dominated world in September.

February offers a rare opportunity to enjoy three world class male Kathak dancers with their incredible show Navodit.

The season will come to a close with two artists dearly loved and internationally respected, Roopa Panesar and Bhupinder Singh Chaggar on 6th March 2014. (See Page 12)

This season offers a little of something for everyone, so my team and I look forward to welcoming you all.w

Sincere ‘Thank you’ to everyone who has made a donation and given the time for our charitable causes and support Darren’s 10k. I am truly grateful

Happy Festivities

Keranjeet Kaur VirdeeC.E.O

sAFEGUARDING ThE oFFER!It is also gives me great pleasure to announce that Arts Council England will continue to support our great cause from 2015 to 2018.

Even though we receive funding from statutory organisations, we still need to fundraise to carry out our charitable aims. In Summer 2014 we launched our first Campaign called GENERATION 21. Over the next three years this appeal will allow individuals and businesses to make donations and offer support for programmes and projects that are under threat or closure.

As a registered charity we are grateful for the donations we receive to help us to preserve South Asian Arts. As a young person in the late 1960’s, a lack of culturally relevant music and dance activities ignited my passion to bring about change for people from all walks of life. I wanted to give people the opportunity to take part in arts and culture that inspire them. In my experience access to arts gives an individual, and in many cases their family, a new confidence, a sense of belonging, an opportunity to thrive and make a positive contribution to the place they have made home.

I believe art and culture is the binding agent of our society. Provides us with the tools to express our individuality, highlights a community’s uniqueness and is a vehicle to share in, a positive way, things that we have in common. Teaches us to respect each other and empowers us to create a space and place that we all feel safe to grow, thrive and contribute to.

Recently I spoke to Biman and Suma Dey about their son Om who joined the Sunday Music Academy in 2012 and this is their story.

So for as little as £1.00 a week or £51.00 a year will make a huge difference to people like OM and others to have sustainable access to opportunities provided by SAA-uk.

You can make your DONATION to our Campaign ‘Generation 21’ or appeal ‘Our Music, Our Dance, Our Heritage’ by cheque, made payable to ‘SAA-uk’ or ONLINE via our website: www.saa-uk.org. (Please note: if you are a UK taxpayer you have the option to gift aid your donation)

To discuss ‘MAJOR GIFTS’ or partnerships please contact Darren Tiffney ‘Head of Finance and Marketing’ on 0113 244 5523 or email [email protected]

On behalf of all the performers, volunteers and students I wish to express a heart felt ‘Thank you’ for your donation.

Om is 7 years old and was born two months premature. As a result there is a delay in his cognitive learning, communication skills, social skills, concentration and gross/fine motor development.

I was introduced to SAA-UK through one of their programmes and through further discussions, music was recommended as discipline which may improve areas that I have described above.

Through attending tabla sessions at the Sunday Music Academy, Om has made noticeable progress in the above areas. School have also seen change in his progress. Although Om is still development in the conceptual learning, he has shown improvement in his memory retention, social interactions and communication skills.

As parents, we have been very pleased to have enrolled Om to the music academy. Om clearly enjoys the challenge that is provided for him and the style of teaching. We would recommend other students to enrol on the multi-disciplines that are available at the academy.

RUDRA VEENA (ThE VEENA oF LoRD shIVA)

Jyoti Hegde presents the Rudra Veena, accompanied by Surdarshan Singh on Jori

We continue our year of celebrating Women in Art with the internationally renowned Jyoti Hegde. Defying all odds in a male dominated world, Hegde has surpassed all expectations in her struggle to learn and perform India’s king instrument, the Rudra Veena. Traditionally perceived as one of the most emotionally and physically demanding instruments to play, Indian classical concerts featuring the Rudra Veena are a rarity even within India. Hegde makes her debut UK tour accompanied, on Jori, by upcoming percussionist Surdarshan Singh.

‘A very rare opportunity to listen the Rudra Veena and Jori in West Yorkshire – an evening that will appeal to fans of Early music, World music and Classical Music’

SAA-uk is delighted to be invited by the School of Music (University of Leeds) to present two internationally renowned musicians who have performed extensively across Europe, Asia, and USA. Arnab Chakrabarty (Sarod) will be presenting two rare afternoon Raags, Hansakinkini and Gaud Sarang and will be accompanied by Bhupinder Singh Chaggar on Tabla.

Arnab hails from the Shahjahanpur tradition of Sarod playing having received his training from Prof. Kalyan Mukherjea and Pt Buddhadev Dasgupta. This particular style of Sarod traces its roots back to the Afghan Rabab which made its way from Afghanistan to India through nomadic tribes. Bhupinder represents the Banaras Gharana (style) of Tabla playing having learnt from the legendary Late Pt Sharda Sahai.

Raag Hansakinkini is a melody of brooding introspection and will be portrayed in the traditional structures of alap, jod and gat. Raag Gaud Sarang expresses a mood of profound joy and the listener might find some melodic phrasing similar to those in the opening movement of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. This Raag will be presented in two medium and fast-paced Teentaal (16-beat cycle) compositions, concluding with jhala.

Ustad Harjinderpal Singh presents mesmerising ragas on the Santoor.

The Santoor is a hundred stringed instrument from the valleys of Kashmir, this complex instrument produces a beautiful trance-like sound, which Sufi mystics use as an accompanying instrument in divine music.

A senior disciple of Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Harjinderpal learnt to play the Santoor under his tutelage and has become one of its leading exponents. In this concert, Harjinderpal will perform a selection of beautiful Hindustani ragas accompanied by Tabla maestro, Kousic Sen.

“A concert that is synonymous with tradition and prestige lead by a contemporary talent who continues to challenge stereotypical preconceptions of Indian Classical music.” Keranjeet Kaur Virdee (CEO)

We are proud to present Leeds’ very own Sukhmani Kaur Rayat in her debut classical Tabla performance.

Traditionally, Manch Pravesh is the formal presentation of a student of the Indian Classical arts by their respected teacher. Sukhmani has been training under the careful guidance of Shri Bhupinder Chaggar (See previous page), who himself represents the rich stylistic school known as the Banaras Gharana of Tabla playing. Continuing with our theme of Women in the Arts, Sukhmani has broken the mould as one of the only young female Tabla players to emerge from the British Asian classical music scene. Sukhmani goes against the traditional expectations of women in music and stands her ground as a dynamic and engaging musician - testament to her unfaltering commitment and passion towards the artform.

Join Sukhmani on her personal journey as she prepares to showcase her Tabla centre stage accompanied by Kirpal Singh on Dilrubha.

The evening will also feature:NEXT GENERATION musicians from SAA-uk Indian Music Academies

City professionals by day, Kathak dancers by night, Kaleel Anwar, Pranav Yajnik and Sanjay Shetty perform in Akademi’s Navodit. Taking off their suits and donning their angarkhas, lawyers Kaleel and Pranav, and vice president of finance Sanjay, escape the stress of the city by getting to business on the dance floor every evening. Audiences now have the chance to see the traditional Indian style of Kathak performed powerfully in a rarely seen all male cast.

Inspired by the greats such as Pt Birju Maharaj and Kumudhini Lakhia, the boys bring the discipline and routine of city life into their Kathak, a style renowned for its intricate rhythms and fluidity. As a male in a female dominated industry the going can be tough, especially as in Indian culture, dance is traditionally expected from girls. However, these rising contemporary stars have broken moulds by finding balance between the success of their jobs and artistic careers, and come together to create a production truly rare for a dance stage.

MARch 2015AURAT (MEANING WoMAN)

Considered one of the finest Sitar players to emerge on the Indian Classical music scene in the UK, Roopa Panesar has received kudos from audiences and peers alike for her outstanding ability and quality of music. After successful tours in North America, Europe and the UK, Roopa’s soulful yet mature style of playing has left her listeners captivated and craving more. Following rave reviews for her work on Talvin Singh’s Bombay Talkies, Roopa returns to Leeds to present a concert of Indian Classical music joined, on Tabla, by Shri Bhupinder Singh Chaggar.

From an early age Roopa has been groomed in the finer nuances of Indian Classical music under the careful guidance of Sitar maestro and educationalist Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE. She has also had the privilege to learn from legendary artists such as Pt Arvind Parikh, Ustad Shahid Parvez and Pt Bahauddin Dagar. Our series of presenting Women in Art would not be complete without a performance from Roopa, and what better way to end the celebrations with the production ‘Aurat’.

FEsTIVALs oF soUTh AsIA ‘Empowering the next generation to succeed in a Global World’

SAA-uk’s ‘Festivals of South Asia’ is a project that can be delivered at various points of the year within the Academic Calendar. Through the choice of the three different mediums of Music, Dance and Visual Arts, school children will be introduced to various aspects of South Asian culture in an engaging and inspiring manner by our team of dedicated and versatile practitioners and educationalists. We can create one off workshops, assemblies or longer term projects that meet your specific needs, fulfill government strategies for numeracy, literacy, P.E. Sports, Faith and Diversity and Arts, whether they have an educational emphasis or focus on fun and collaboration.

Music

Steeped in an aural tradition passed down over thousands of year, both the classical and folk music are rich and offer creative exploration of numeracy, geography, history, literacy, science and an appreciation and respect of cultural diversity.

SONGS OF SOUTH ASIA is ideally suited to KS1 and KS2. It is a selection of songs in diverse south asian languages through which the classical, folk and popular music traditions can be explored as well as poetry and movement

SARGAM and TAAL offers children the opportunity to see and play instruments like the Sitar, Tabla, Santoor, and Harmonium. Sing scales, recite rhythmic patterns and numbers, multiplication and division.

Dance

High energy, precision, mythology and rich dialogue come to mind when you think of all the dance forms that originate from South Asia. In Leeds we have specialists in North and South Indian Classical, Folk and Bollywood

Bhangra to Bollywood - Bhangra – a dance form that includes the lively loud beats of the Dhol, Tumbi and dance moves that imitate the movement farmers digging, ploughing, hoeing, planting and harvesting the crops. In its earliest form it was a celebratory folk dance of Vaisakhi, the coming of the Spring. Now it is worldwide phenomenon.Bollywood is a chutney mix of dance styles that are choreographed to Indian film

soundtracks and songs. Both dance form are all about engaging and inspiring children to get more physical, have fun, build stamina and develop skills in co-ordination, teamwork, camaraderie and respect for each other.

North to South is an opportunity to explore two very different dance form (Kathak from North India and Bharatanatyam from South India). Both are steeped in history and are used to narrate great epics of Indian literature through head and hand gestures, whilst equally offeing the opportunity for the class to explore a language to tell contemporary stories, explore movement, rhythmic patterns, numbers and time cycles.

Visual Arts

Offers schools the opportunities to learn new techniques to create pieces of work, while exploring the history of the particular tradition and geography of country or region that the art form originates from.

LEARNING AND PARTIcIPATIoN WITh sAA-Uk

After a very busy, vibrant and inspiring Summer, we’re looking forward to welcoming all our wonderful music and dance students back with the start of a new academic year.

And we really do have something for everyone, whether you’re an absolute beginner or advanced learner, an adult or child, a school or community group, SAA-uk offers a whole range of activities to celebrate South Asian music and dance. Plus we’re inviting new participants to come along to an Open Day during the first week of term to give our classes a go – so if you want to come along and try our music classes on Sunday 7th September or dance classes on Friday 26th September (or both!) you are more than welcome! And we have a new member of the Dance Academy team – outstanding Bharatanatyam dancer Santosh Menon; student and teacher at the world-famous Kalakshetra Dance Academy, who we hope will persuade some of you boys to join in and enjoy dance too!

We take a holistic approach to learning, enhancing weekly study with additional opportunities to perform and participate in community and professional platforms. We also encourage learners to take in and absorb as much live art as they can, so please have a look at our programme of events in the other section of this brochure.

In the meantime, if you have questions or want to register, please call me on 0113 2445523 or email [email protected]
