SENECA VALLEY BAND BOOSTER NEWSLETTER
September 2014
October 2014
The 2014-2015 academic year is now
officially underway. With a new school
year come plenty of new challenges. All
band members must be able to balance
new and academically rigorous classes as
well as maintain proficiency on their
instrument. Maintaining proficiency is
quite a task when it involves responsibili-
ties to a marching band, a concert band,
a jazz ensemble and maybe even private
lessons. Time after school is usually at a
premium. For students to achieve high
grades in core academic classes while
continuing to make positive musical
contributions to the Seneca Valley Bands,
efficiency and organization are a must.
Following the plan below may help in
completing more tasks on a given
evening without feeling overwhelmed by
the number of jobs.
(1) A written schedule of daily tasks is a
good place to start. The list should
include items like homework, practic-
ing, and a job schedule. You may
even want to schedule when you will
eat dinner and relax!
(2) Start by figuring out how much time
you actually have. Figure out how
many hours will exist between the
last school bell of the day and
bedtime. Keep in mind that bedtime
should be at a sensible hour.
(3) Prioritizing comes next.
(a) The first priority, oddly enough, is
making sure that you eat dinner.
Dinner is a simple “being need,” and
you will find that your evening will be
much more productive if you nourish
your body.
(b) Next, check to see if you have any
tests or assignments due the follow-
ing day. This would include playing
tests as well. These immediate tasks
take priority over other school work.
(c) Next, you would schedule the items
that need routine maintenance. This
may include an excerpt in band, a
book you are reading in a class, or a
project that is due in a few weeks.
Stay ahead of as many tasks as
possible. You will have a much
better grasp of information when it
is received in small bits as opposed
to “cramming”.
(4) Finally, give yourself some time to
relax. Even if it is only ten minutes of
TV time or reading a chapter of a
favorite book, your body and mind
will thank you.
The steps listed above are merely a
suggestion. Try to tailor an approach for
what works best for your individual
methods and goals. The key is being
organized and efficient. The band direc-
tors at Seneca Valley are counting on your
success just as much as you are. Good
luck on a productive and enjoyable school
year.

Note:
This newsletter serves as
the main form of commu-
nication for the Band
Boosters organization as
well as all band
activities.
You are welcome to
submit articles by the
15th of the month before
you want the information
to be printed. This
newsletter is published
at the beginning of
every month except
January and July. Send
your articles via e-mail

Please use “band
newsletter” as your
subject line.
We’re off to a good start with our
fundraising efforts this season! Pie Fest,
Enjoy Books, Bruster's Ice Cream coupon
books and most recently the Chipotle
Dining for Dollars events have all had
positive results.
Bruster’s Ice Cream coupons: total of 141
coupon books were sold contributing
$846.00 to individual trip accounts.
Dining For Dollars – Chipotle, September
8th: We raised $565.33 on total sales of
$1,130.70. This was very good consider-
ing we had a number of competing events
and activities that night. As noted in
earlier newsletters Joyce Delaney will be
stepping aside as our Dining For Dollars
Coordinator. Adam and Erin Kenerdell
have stepped up and will now officially
take-over as coordinators of Dining For
Dollars and will be working with Joyce to
complete the transition. Welcome and
thank you Erin and Adam! Once again,
many thanks to Joyce for all the hard
work and dedication she has put in over
the past years in making Dining For
Dollars a very successful fundraising
channel for us. If you have any ideas for
Dining For Dollars partners and/or
contacts, please contact Adam directly at
Next up…Please mark Tuesday October
7th - Chick Fil A from 5:00 pm – 8:00 at
the Route 228 location. Check the
svband.net website over the next few
weeks for the flyer.
Concessions: As many of you are aware,
after many years of hard-work,
dedication and commitment, Kevin and
Bettie Sager will be stepping down from
running our concession stands. I know…
it seems almost unimaginable to
consider walking in to our concession
stands on a Friday night home game
and not find Kevin and Bettie hard at
work! I think we can all agree…no one
person will replace the Sagers! So we
are seeking a few folks interested in
stepping up and taking over this critical
fundraising channel for next season. The
key is we want to use this season as a
training period for those who might step
in to “learn from the best” so to speak
and see how things are done.
We only have 3 home games left, so
now is the time to take advantage of
this valuable resource. Please contact
myself or John Campbell if you are
interested.
Also coming up in October is the
fantastic annual SV Band Boosters Pasta
Dinner – Saturday October 18th from
4:00 – 7:00 in the Senior High School
Cafeteria.
Concessions
Just like our marching band, the conces-
sion stands are off to a roaring start!
Please remember to continue to support
the band by only purchasing food items
from the brick concession stand by the
main gate and/or from the visitor’s stand.
Please also consider the concession stand
for feeding your band member before
home games. The stand will be open and
ready to serve before report time. Thank
you to the band members that have
supported the concession stands already!
We appreciate your business!
Two games down and three to go – and,
we are still in need of a shadow or
shadows! There has been some interest
from a few band boosters about forming a
committee to manage the concession
stands. So, if you are interested in
helping at all, please let us know!

First Aid for After-School Band Practices
Now that band camp is over and we are
headed into the busy and exciting fall,
please remember that there will not be
any Booster Medical personnel at the
after school practices. The students still
need to have water bottles and any
medicines that they may require with
them. In our fall schedule, the students
will need to also have their medicines
with them for all of our football games and
for any parades. Many times, the fall can
be very warm. Hydrating with water and
Gatorade before performances is a good
practice. If you have any issues or
concerns throughout the season, please
contact me.
Thank you

Uniforms
The uniforms are looking great on the field.
Let’s keep them this way by taking them to
Metro Dry-Cleaners when necessary. The
black collar insert needs to be washed after
every performance and the inside of the
hat should be wiped clean. Please keep in
mind the following:
Pants should not be touching the
ground. The pants should hang straight, at the top of the foot. If they
fold, they are too long. Make neces-sary adjustments at the shoulder
straps. See Mrs. Ferraro or Mrs. O’Connor if you have any questions.
Take a moment to tie the lace inside
the hat to the correct tightness so that the hat sits horizontally on your head.
Hair needs to be pinned up inside the
hat; hair should be off the uniform
collar.
No make-up, jewelry or nail polish is
permitted to be worn while in uniform.
BLACK t-shirts with sleeves must be
worn under the uniform. Turtlenecks
or mocks are not allowed under the
uniform.
The only things permitted to be carried
in the garment bag are the jacket and
pants.
For every performance be sure to have
your hat in the hat box, raincoat, black
socks, black t-shirt, polished dinkles
and uniform. Please double check
to make sure you have high black
socks; we are finding several
banders each game without
proper socks.
dining purchase to the Boosters. You can also
still use your BWW loyalty cards if you have
them. This is a great way to enjoy a terrific
meal out and support our Band Boosters
fundraising efforts.

Homecoming Booth
Come out and show your school
spirit!! The Homecoming Parade is
scheduled for Thursday, October
23rd. The band will once again be
sponsoring a booth at the parade.
Helping with this booth is great way to
meet other band parents and to see
the band perform at the same time!
Help is needed to prepare the food in
the afternoon and we will also need 9-10
volunteers to staff the booth that evening.
Our menu will include chicken wings, pulled
pork sandwiches, pepperoni rolls, nachos,
pretzels and drinks. Please Email if you are
interested.
Kevin & Bettie Sager
Please help support the band by
asking your friends, neighbors and
family to come to our Rowan Cafete-
ria showroom to try out new mattress
sets.
Band students who refer buyers
will receive money toward the
upcoming band trip!! Plus, the
Band Booster’s general account
receives money for every mattress
sold!! See the flyer in this newsletter
and give it to everyone you know.
Make sure your band student’s name is
written at the bottom so that they get
credit toward their trip account if a
mattress set is purchased! One in 10
people are looking for new mattresses
so help spread the word.
All mattress sets are brand new, made
in the company factory after you order
them, and sent directly to the distribution
center in your area. They can be delivered
or you can pick them up at the distribu-
tion center located in the Mars area.
If every band family were to refer at
least one person who purchases a
set, we would make OVER $20,000!!
Please do your part to support this
fundraiser!!
Help Needed:
**Volunteer(s) to paint a publicity sign for
the Zelienople Community Board
**Volunteers to wear mattress costumes
near our concession stand on October
10th or 24th.
**Student and adult volunteers are
needed the day of the sale. If you are

shirts for every trip participant. Last
year Brendan Kennelty drew the design.
This year we are opening this up to all
band members. The design must include
Seneca Valley somewhere in it. The rest
is up to you. Remember you’ll be
marching in the parade, visiting the Air
and Space Museum, the National Zoo,
the National Monuments, The Baltimore
National Aquarium and the International
Spy Museum. Show your band pride and
