ZooBomB is Born September 2002

Out of a wormholeThe confluence of mini-bike riders

and urban down-hillers

The People’s Bike Library of Greater Portland

• Quickly the new group acquired mini-bikes

• They were locked to a bike rack outside Rocco’s

• The Program of Outreach had begun. Anyone can check out a bike on Sunday night

• The collection was named The People’s Bike Library of Greater Portland

Rocco’s and the Bike Library =Good relationship

• Never a complaint from Rocco’s

At Some Point, the Pile Moved across the street from Rocco’s

• Near to the parking lot of the Treasury Building

• In July 2003, a local weekly calls the pile a “kinetic sculpture”.

Pepper Pop Lock

• In September 2003, two rogue PPB members cut the lock and confiscated the People’s Bike Library.

• About half the bikes were later recovered.

The Holy Rack is Born• Spontaneous protests erupt

in downtown Portland.• Pilgrims visit the Holy

Rack

The People’s Bike Library matures• Residents and visitors alike

enjoy the Bike Library

The People’s Bike Library becomes a Portland Landmark

• May 2004 – I Like Bike• The Pile graces the cover

of Portland’s Inside Guide to Biking.

The People’s Library Is Living Art

• Seattle Art monthly September 2004

The Pile is mobile

Adversary of the Library• Street kids still steal parts

from the Bike Library• Then the city tags the bikes

for looking “Abandoned”

Pod-sack Island

• In Mid-2006, the pile moved across the street to share the traffic island with the big Pod-Sack.

• A local business owner complains

October 2006

• The pile moves back, across from Rocco’s

• ZooBomBers and representatives from the City begin meetings to decide on the future of the People’s Bike Library.

2007 – the Future

• ??

• The future of the Pile is in our hands
