TV UHF ANTENNA AND COMBINING SYSTEMS

    (UHF Band IV & V)

RYMSA RF manufactures a broad range of antennas for the transmission of TV signals in UHF band. Antenna systems are currently formed by stacking single radiating elements properly disposed and fed with the adequate phase and amplitude. These unitary radiators can be either directional, as those based on panel solutions, or dipole-style providing omni or quasi-omnidirectional performances. RYMSA RF designs the single antenna elements succeeding in the challenge of displaying the necessary ruggedness minimizing wind load and weight, and ready to remain weatherproof for a long life withstanding any sort of extreme climatic conditions. Moreover, all our radiating elements include a fiberglass radome to prevent their components to a direct contact with environmental agents. This versatility allows using them also individually for low power needs such as relay sites. Power dividers and interconnecting lines (both flexible and rigid), are utilized to build the distribution network which transports the signals from the main transmission line up to each radiating element. The very assorted range of different models of these products manufactured by RYMSA RF ensures the capability of satisfying any possible request, from simple arrays to complex high power antenna systems. The antenna systems can be conceived either to be installed on the site mast element by element, and therefore supplied partially disassembled, or fully assembled in plant with all the elements pre-assembled on a spine or side-mounted or top-mounted pole structures, which also may be fully enclosed in a GRP cylinder and delivered as a unitized integrated product. Examples of the latter are the UHF panel spines and the superturnstile antennas.

RYMSA RF AT15 series are compiling several types of antennas for TV applications within the B-IV/V range.

Panel systems: UHF panel arrays are the most versatile solutions to implement radiation patterns customized to any particular coverage requirement. Ideal for situations involving multichannel needs and tailored patterns. UHF panel systems are frequently delivered as a full integrated antenna. All our panels are broadband operation and available with several input connector size options to achieve any possible power request. In terms of the polarization, several models are available:

Horizontal polarization panels: suitable for the implementation of square, pentagonal and multi-panel arrangements.

Vertical polarization panel: especially suitable for square arrangements.

    Elliptical/Circular polarization panels: especially conceived

for assembling antenna systems meeting the new challenges of the market on non-linear polarization, the antenna can be supplied either with a power splitting hybrid neatly integrated on its frame, or with two connectors, one per polarization component.

Superturnstile antennas: there are several versions, all ready for

multichannel applications, and ranging from low to high power handling and from low to high antenna gains.

The excellence in quality of the broadcast services strongly depends on the ellimination of the in-band and out-of-band spurious emissions generated by the proccess of amplification at the transmitters. Terrestrial digital TV (DTV) emissions of all the existing standards require to guarantee the spectral channel response by fulfiling the digital TV standard mask requests. This is achieved by the use of filters at the transmitter output. For DTV applications RYMSA RF offers a full range of coaxial (TEM) bandpass filters, FLDV series, composed by 6 or 8 poles, which cover a wide scope of power handling levels. RYMSA RF FLDV filters support channel bandwidths of 6, 7 and 8 MHz, and are tunable to any frequency within the UHF TV band. The use of the inter-cavity feedback technique by crossed couplings allows the compliance of the mask specifications required by DVB-T, ISDB-T and ATSC. This catalog offers a most typical mask response for each digital standard and every RYMSA RF filter model. Any other tuning shape not included is likely to be achieved on demand, do not hesitate to ask us. For high power applications, RYMSA RF FLDV models are supplied with a liquid cooled circuit, which helps dissipate the heat generated in the filter and avoids distortion in the mask response and thermal drift. Cooling system units, ready for use with several number of filters at once are available. However, the maximum power handling of any filter is ultimately limited by the decrease of the breakdown voltage with the altitude of the operating site. The nominal power levels displayed at this catalog are specified for 550m above sea level, thus a derating table is included at the end of this section for evaluating power handling at any other altitude. For very high power needs, RYMSA RF also makes available a range of waveguide dual-mode filters, with similar mask shape characteristics than their coaxial counterparts.

Digital TV scenarios not involving the need of providing both combination features and mask response at once, can make use of channel combiners composed by non-mask filters, as any application still required on analog TV. For those applications RYMSA RF offers a full range of coaxial (TEM) bandpass filters, FL15 series, composed by 3 or 4 poles, which cover a wide scope of power handling levels. RYMSA RF FLDV filters support channel bandwidths of 6, 7 and 8 MHz, and are tunable to any frequency within the UHF TV band. Iris-coupled, comb-line and interdigital are among the available design approaches. Other models such as lowpass, reject (notch type) and harmonic filters are also available. The FL15 series are natural air convention units. RYMSA RF develops the filters with the aid of several in-house and commercial software packages. First pre-serial units are submitted to stringent electrical and thermal tests in order to guarantee the response and stability of the series units.

A channel combiner is a passive RF device devoted to sum on a common output the signals produced from several different sources, keeping a high isolation between them, and minimizing ohmic and return loss. RYMSA RF manufactures channel combiners from low power to very high power applications, and displaying several different construction techniques, which are described at the following pages. These techniques are frequently involving the use of filters, which type and response are key factors of the combiner performances. Depending on the application and requested performances, the channel combiners will include mask filters or non-mask filters. RYMSA RF broadcast catalogue is compiling detailed information of a wide range of the most common standard products related to the field of channel combiners, though RYMSA RF 's capabilities are not limited to them but also extended to provide custom solutions to any possible particular request, either modifying well-proven designs or developing brand new ones.

The filters are usually bandpass type, either coaxial (TEM) or waveguide, and their selectivity is the parameter that defines the combiner behaviour in terms of channel spacing. An additional bandpass filter is sometimes used at the WB input of the cell, in order to achieve greater isolation between inputs. Due to their expandable nature by the cascade connection of several cells, constant impedance combiners are the most versatile solution, offering the best performances, as getting the highest isolation and the minimum channel spacing, being the combiner inputs VSWR not very affected by the changes of antenna system VSWR . Generally speaking, almost any complex combining system for digital applications, is implemented using this technique. DTV needs of this type are currently covered by RYMSA RF by using constant impedance combiners as the preferred choice. The use of mask filters to build this type of combiners allows to provide adjacent channel combination by using 6 or 8 poles mask filters, achieving both channel combination features and mask shape characteristics to the signals at once, thus avoiding the use of a single filter at the transmitter outputs. These devices are known as Mask Combiners.

RYMSA RF DPDV constant impedance mask combiner series make good use of the previously described FLDV bandpass filters, and RYMSA RF DP15 constant impedance non-mask combiner series make good use of the previously described FL15 bandpass filters, to offer a very wide portfolio of standardized constant impedance models, ranging from low to high power requirements, and displaying the same kind of outstanding electrical versatility as their constituent filters. This electrical finesse is enhanced by a very compact mechanical design of each constant impedance cell aimed to save room in the transmitting facilities.

    BANDPASS FILTER

A constant impedance combiner, also known as balanced combiner or directional filter type, is composed by two identical filters, two 3 dB hybrids and a balancing load (equilibrium load), interconnected as shown in the figure. This single device is also known as diplexer "module" or "cell". Narrowband input (NB) corresponds to the filters resonant frequency, whilst the wideband input (WB) admits any other signal within the working bandwidth, provided it is enough spaced from the resonance.

    Star Point Combiners

A star point combiner of N channels is built as the parallel connection of N bandpass filters to a common point where the output is located, each one tuned to one of the desired channel frequencies. The system is able to work provided that at each filter output, all the N-1 remaining filters present an open circuit impedance. This may lead to the use of transmission lines of different lenghts between the filters and the common output. This sort of combiner results in a cost-effective solution, displaying the advantage of room saving and keeping many of the performances related with the use of filters, though without the expandable nature of the constant impedance type. It can be selected mask filters or non-mask filters to build the star-point channel combiner, depending on the applications and radioelectrical parameters requested for the combiners.

    Environmental conditions

RYMSA RF mask combiners are making use of bandpass filters which power admission depends on the fact of the decrease of the RF voltage breakdown when the altitude increases. The attached derating table has to be used over the nominal power handling levels supplied at the catalog sheets for a proper evaluation of the admission capabilities of all FLDV filters and DPDV channel combiners for each particular need. 20%

    Manifold Combiners

In a manifold combiner of N channels, N filters are connected in parallel to a common transmission line, which displays one short circuit at one end and the system output at the other end. The overall performances depend on the position of the filters along the transmission line and on the distance to the short circuit. The manifold configuration is a lower cost solution than the constant impedance configuration, displaying the advantage of room saving, and retaining many of the performances related to the use of filters. It is expandable to a higher number of channels, but in a less easy way than constant impedance type, since the length of the transmission line and the filters allocation have to be recalculated. The number of channels able to be implemented is greater than that achieved with the star-point configuration. It can select mask filters or non-mask filters to build the manifold channel combiner, depending on the applications and radioelectrical parameters requested for the combiners.

    Stretch Line Combiners

Stretch line combiners, also known as commutating line or loop-style, display a very simple approach built without the use of any filter. So, this solution must be displayed Digital TV scenarios not involving the need of providing mask response, as any application still required on analog TV. The elementary two channels combiner is composed by two 3 dB hybrid couplers and a balancing load, connected as shown at the attached sketch. One of the two transmission lines interconnecting the hybrids contains a loop that supplies the phase shift required to produce the signal additions and cancellations that make the system work. The isolation between inputs is directly related to that of the hybrids. With the advantage of neither showing group delay nor thermal drift, they are expandable only with limited versatility, since the spacing between contiguous channels must be constant. Additionally, their transmission performances are more distorted the closer the channels to be combined are.
