QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETITION DIVISIONS

1. Soloists Keiki Kāne and Kaikamahine Division

Entrants must be 5 to 17 years old on or before November 9, 2018.

Entrants must dance hula kahiko, hula ‘auana, and oli.

2. Pālua – Keiki Division

Entrants must be 5 to 17 years old on or before November 9, 2018.

Note: A haumāna that has won the title of Master or Miss Overall Hula O Nā Keiki may not compete in the hula competition thereafter.

PALAPALA SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Each hālau must submit the following by July 15, 2018:

1. Agreement to Participate + kumu(s) individual headshot picture(s)

2. Soloist(s) Haumāna Bio(s) + headshot picture

3. Pālua Haumāna Bios (if applicable) + individual headshot pictures

4. Parental Consent Forms

Submit the following for each haumāna by August 1, 2018:

1. Soloist(s) Information Form

2. Pālua Information Form

3. Song Sheet Forms: Words to all mele (oli, ka‘i, ho‘i, main mele). All Hawaiian words must havediacritical markings to avoid misinterpretation of its meaning.

4. Sufficient documentation stating dates when mele were composed and the composer’sname

5. Sound Requirement Form (1 per hālau)

Submit the following for each haumāna by October 1, 2018:

SOLO HULA KAHIKO

• The mele kahiko must pertain to Maui and can be sourced from current repertoire or research in Hawaiian language newspapers, books, or articles.

*Bonus points will be awarded to the kumu (s) (towards the Akoni Akana Kumu Award) for mele that were composed within the last year by the student (participant) or kumu. The mele must pertain to Maui and any sufficient documentation should also be provided.

• All solo participants must oli in the competition. Non-adherence to this rule shall result in an automatic disqualification. Applicant must also state the style of oli to be performed and why it was chosen. Words for the oli must be included with the application.

• Duplication of mele will not be allowed in the ka‘i/ho‘i and main mele in its own category. This means that a mele chosen as a ka‘i/ho‘i, cannot be duplicated as a ka‘i/ho‘i, but it can be used as a main mele by another hālau. Reserve your mele with the Competition Administrator as soon as possible. Hālau will be notified if a mele is already taken.

• The ka‘i and ho‘i are required and must be different from the main mele. Both must be danced. It is recommended that there is a definite separation of the ka‘i and ho‘i from the main mele. Words for the ka‘i and ho‘i must be included with the application. Choose mele that are appropriate for the haumāna. Omission of ka‘i or ho‘i will result in point deductions for non-adherence to rules.

• At all times, when accompanying an ‘ōlapa (dancer), each ho‘opa‘a must pa‘i and chant. Non-adherence to this rule will result in point deductions.

• Costume and adornments will be judged during the Interview and the Competition. Appropriate undergarments must be worn. Inappropriate undergarments may result in deductions on the costume scores and non-adherence to rules. Submit form by October 1, 2018.

• A time limit of six (6) minutes will be allocated from beginning of the ka‘i to the end of the ho‘i. The clock begins when there is movement or sound that will be interpreted as the beginning or ending of the performance. Five (5) points per overtime minute or fraction of a minute will be deducted from the overall score.

SOLO HULA ‘AUANA

• All ‘auana mele must be of the Hawaiian genre.

*Bonus points will be awarded to the kumu (s) (towards the Akoni Akana Kumu Award) for mele that were composed within the last year by the student (participant) or kumu. Any sufficient documentation should also be provided.

**Additional bonus points will will be awarded to the kumu (s) (towards the Akoni Akana Kumu Award) for choosing to perform hapa haole mele.

• Sufficient documentation of the date it was written must be submitted along with an accurate English translation. Copies of newspaper articles, web pages, magazines, email from the composer, etc. are examples of sufficient documentation.

HULA PĀLUA

• No more than (2) two participants can perform together.

• All ‘auana mele must be of the Hawaiian genre.

*Bonus points will be awarded to the kumu (s) (towards the Akoni Akana Kumu Award) for mele that were composed within the last year by the student (participant) or kumu. Any sufficient documentation should also be provided.

**Additional bonus points will will be awarded to the kumu (s) (towards the Akoni Akana Kumu Award) for choosing to perform hapa haole mele.

Because of the theme, no newly created mele is allowed. Reserve your mele with the Competition Administrator as soon as possible.

SCHEDULED STAGE REHEARSALS

• Each hālau will be allowed 15-20 minutes of scheduled rehearsal time on the competition stage on Friday and Saturday morning. These times are used strictly for stage placement; however, you may use it for hula rehearsals providing you are within your time allotment. A timekeeper will be in the room to monitor the use of the stage.

• If you choose to use the House Band, it is recommended that you make arrangements to have additional rehearsals with the Band outside of the scheduled rehearsal time.

• If an additional sound check is needed, hālau must make arrangements outside of the scheduled rehearsal time through the Rehearsal Monitor.

JUDGING CRITERIA

PRE-COMPETITION

• Palapala (5% of overall score) - All paperwork must be submitted by the required deadlines. Points will be deducted if information is received after specified deadlines. Use only Hula O Nā Keiki forms. Be thorough in answering all of the questions. If there are narratives other than the required information, keep that information on a separate sheet. (e.g. How we made the dye for our costumes; the ceremonies practiced before competition.)

Headshot pictures: These pictures of the kumu and haumāna will be used in the program and for name tags. Make sure each photo is at least 300 dpi for clarity. It is not necessary to be in a hula outfit.

• Interview session of each hālau and haumāna judging criteria (25% of overall score). Judges will consider the following of each haumāna during the interview:

o Interpretation and understanding of oli, ka‘i, ho‘i, kahiko and ‘auana mele.

o Explanation of costumes and adornments (must bring to session)

o Poise

o Clarity of Oral Expression

o Clarity of Palapala

All participants in a hālau will be interviewed in the same session. Only contestants will be allowed in the Hālau Interview session. There is a time limit of 20 minutes per hālau, although the time may be adjusted depending on the amount of contestants. When doing a presentation, practice to keep within the time frame of 20 minutes. A timekeeper & facilitator will be present in the room.

The interview session allows the haumāna to share his/her understanding of the competition and their cultural knowledge. The haumāna will be scored, not the hālau. Each haumāna shall be prepared to do his/her own presentation. The presentation should cover the following:

o Talk about the oli, the style of the oli and why this oli was chosen for this individual. o Talk about the mele kahiko; its meaning and significance to the individual and what

he/she did to prepare for this competition. o Show the kahiko costume and adornments and explain what it consists of and why it

was chosen. o Talk about the mele ‘auana; its meaning and significance to the individual and what

he/she did to prepare for this competition. o Show the ‘auana costume and adornments and explain what it consists of and why it

was chosen. o Be prepared for Q&A with the judges

Props or media are allowed only if content enhances oral presentation. Media is not to replace an oral presentation.

Bring all costumes and samples of the adornments to show and describe.

No additional paperwork can be given to the Judges at the time of the interview. However, if there is information that needs to be shared, this would be the time to tell the judges about anything that doesn’t reflect what was originally submitted in the paper work.

Pālua entrants will not be judged, but it is recommended that they be present at the interview session.

After the interview is over, the hālau will be dismissed, and a 10-minute interview of the Kumu will be conducted for the Akoni Akana Perpetual Award. Only the kumu will be allowed in this session. Kumu, please be prepared to share your thoughts with the judges at this time.

COMPETITION

OLI (KAHIKO ONLY)

All judges will judge the oli. An oli is defined as a chant that was not danced to, especially with prolonged phrases chanted in one breath, often with a trill (ʻiʻi) at the end of each phrase. An oli can be of types known as olioli, oli kaholo, oli kepa, kepakepa, ho‘āeae, ho‘ouēuē, kāwele, etc. The judge will consider the following:

• How well does the chanter display an understanding of the poetry as exhibited in the expression of the voice, facial expressions and body movements

• How well does the chanter display proficiency in the chant style selected

• How well does the chanter display confidence in the execution of the oli

• Is the chant style selected appropriate for the words of the mele

• Pronunciation

• Phrasing & rhythm

HULA GUIDELINES

Ka‘i To have ceremonial and appropriate protocol basis. The ka‘i shall not be a portion of the main song/mele, but another appropriate mele must be used. The ka‘i must be danced.

Interpretation All judges shall be well versed in the mele kahiko and mele ‘auana. Consider how the dancer best executes the kumu’s mana‘o of the mele.

Facial & Body Expressions

Consider the facial features as well as other body movements to create a mood or a special effect in the performance.

Posture The body is properly aligned with the hula movements. The body should be centered and balanced proportionately, anticipating the next motion.

Precision of Hands, Feet & Body Movements

The dancer is synchronized with the ho‘opa‘a or music. Consider the level of difficulty as well as fluidity in the execution of the hula steps.

Authenticity of the Dance

The hula accurately depicts the era or the time period being expressed in the dance.

Costume The costume is appropriate to the mele. Does the costume complement the hula interpretation. Appropriate undergarments are worn.

Adornments Lei, kupe‘e, lei po‘o, etc. complement the costume and are suitable to the dance. Consider the choice, hardiness, appropriateness, and style.

Ho‘i To have ceremonial and appropriate protocol basis. The ho‘i shall not be a portion of the main song/mele, but another appropriate mele must be used. The ho‘i must be danced.

*Music Suitability (‘Auana and Pālua)

The mele and musical arrangement are complementary to the hula and the dancer(s).

*Of the right type or quality for a particular purpose or occasion; very appropriate and suited to the circumstances expressed in the performance.

INFRACTIONS

Any infraction of the rules and regulations will be settled at the discretion of the Judges.

Eligibility: Participants must oli and compete in the kahiko and ‘auana categories to qualify for the Overall Award. (Pālua is not required for Overall Hula O Nā Keiki prize.) Prizes (subject to change) will be awarded in the following categories:

The Hula O Nā Keiki Committee reserves the right to add, adjust or remove any prize category stated above, including combining the Overall Winners based on the number of entrants.

Overall winners must be available for a photo session at dawn on Sunday, November 11, 2018. Kumu, please inform and remind your haumāna and their parents. Haumāna should be dressed in the kahiko outfit with adornments. Failure to appear will result in forfeiture of portrait.

THE AKONI AKANA KUMU HULA PERPETUAL AWARD

Before his passing, co-founder of Hula O Nā Keiki, Akoni Akana wished to recognize and reward the kumu hula that best demonstrated po‘okela in preparing for this competition. He personally selected a perpetual drum that will be awarded by Friends of Moku‘ula to the kumu hula that best fulfills the following criteria:

• Submittal of all completed palapala by required deadlines and thoroughness in completing all applications.

• Sharing of kumu hula’s mana‘o at a personal session with the Judges on the morning of Friday, November 9, 2018.

• Completion of haumāna’s reflection of their kumu included in haumāna’s biographical information.

• Adherence to competition rules.

THE AKONI AKANA ‘ŌPIO SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Scholarships may be awarded to ‘ōpio seeking higher learning in Hawaiian Language or Culture. A representative of the scholarship will sit in the interview session to evaluate which ‘ōpio is deserving of this award.

OUT-OF-ORDER APPEARANCE

In the event an adjustment in the Order of Appearance occurs at the request of the hālau, the haumāna may be subject to 25 points deduction from his/her overall score.

SUBSTITUTIONS

No changes or substitutions of contestants or mele will be allowed after August 1, 2018. Non-adherence to this rule may be subject to disqualification.

COMPETITION RESULTS

All final score sheets will be available at the end of the competition and made available by the Competition Administrator. Each hālau is responsible to pick up their packet before leaving the competition. For any questions regarding scores, see the Head Judge or the Executive Administrator.

OTHER COMPETITION ARRANGEMENTS

KĀ‘ANAPALI BEACH HOTEL ROOM RESERVATIONS FOR HĀLAU

Kā‘anapali Beach Hotel extends a courtesy rate to the kumu hula. To qualify for this rate, please use the Hula O Nā Keiki Room Reservations form provided by the Competition Administrator. Rates are subject to change from year to year, depending on hotel occupancy. All requests for room reservations shall be arranged directly with the KBH Room Reservations Department.

HĀLAU TICKET INFORMATION

Purchase 10 tickets or more at the General seating price of $15 and seats will be blocked as reserved seating. No children prices apply. Tickets must be paid by November 1, 2018. No refunds or changes thereafter. Offer expires: November 1, 2018.

Note: Kumu and haumāna entrant may use name badges for entry into the Kanahele Room. However, seating with a name badge is only available in General Seating, not in Reserved Seating. All others must have a ticket. Musicians will be allowed into the room only to play for the hālau. Entrance and exit will be from backstage.
