FIGURE 1 The air valve directspressurized air to the back sideof diaphragm A. The compressedair is applied directly to theliquid column separated byelastomeric diaphragms. Thediaphragm acts as a separationmembrane between thecompressed air and liquid,balancing the load and removingmechanical stress from thediaphragm. The compressed airmoves the diaphragm away fromthe center block of the pump. Theopposite diaphragm is pulled inby the shast connected to thepressurized diaphragm.Diaphragm B is on it’s suctionstroke; air behind the diaphragmhas been forced out to theatmosphere through the exhaustport of the pump. The movementof diaphragm B toward thecenter block of the pump createsa vaccuum within chamber B.Atmospheric pressure forcesfluid into the inlet manifoldforcing the inlet valve ball off itsseat. Liquid is free to move pastthe inlet valve ball and fill theliquid chamber (see shaded area).
FIGURE 2 When the pressurizeddiaphragm, diaphragm A, reachesthe limit of it’s discharge stroke,the air valve redirectspressurized air to the back sideof diaphragm B. The pressurizedair forces diaphragm B awayfrom the center block whilepulling diaphragm A to thecenter block. Diaphragm B is nowon its discharge stroke.Diaphragm B forces the inletvalve ball onto its seat due tothe hydraulic forces developed inthe liquid chamber and manifoldof the pump. These samehydraulic forces list thedischarge valve ball off it’s seat,while the opposite dischargevalve ball is forced onto it’s seat,forcing fluid to flow through thepump discharge. The movementof diaphragm A toward thecenter block of the pump createsa vaccuum within liquid chamberA. Atmospheric pressure forcesfluid into the inlet manifold ofthe pump. The inlet valve ball isforced off it’s seat allowing thefluid being pumped to fill theliquid chamber.
FIGURE 3 At completion of thestroke, the air valve againredirects air to the back side ofdiaphragm A, which startsdiaphragm B on its exhauststroke. As the pump reaches it’soriginal starting point, eachdiaphragm has gone through oneexhaust and one dischargestroke. This constitutes onecomplete pumping cycle. Thepump may take several cycles tocompletely prime depending onthe conditions of the application.
The Ruby diaphragm pump is an air-operated, positive displacement, self-priming pump. These drawings showflow pattern through the pump upon it’s initial stroke. It is assumed the pump has no fluid in it, prior to it’sinitial stroke

ALPHADYNAMIC PUMPS has stored the documentation certifying ATEXcompliance according to Directive 94/9/CE for it’s ranges of Ruby airoperated diaphragm pumps with the SGS Baseefa Limited certificationbody. They are manufactured in a CONDUCT, class II 2 GD c IIB T4 version.
The equipment user is responsible for classifying it’s area of use.
On the other hand, the manufacturer shall identify and affix thecertification class of the manufactured equipment.
