Ghost AMR RiotCase: The complete development of a top-of-the-range mountainbike for ‘Trail’ usage. The development contained engineering of the complete frame, including numerous innovative details. One of the biggest challenges has been to conjoin all technical solutions and innovations in a design that would set a new direction for Ghost Bikes in terms of product identity. The Result of the 2,5 years during project is a product that will be remembered as a big step in mountainbike pioneering. The AMR Riot is available for end-consumers starting in march 2014.

Participation: The project started with my R&D colleague, we invented the patent pending RIOT-Link. The RIOT-Link is a rear-suspension principle. The complete project has been done with a team of four people where I have been fully involved, mainly in the conceptual and engineering processes.

Worth mentioning: The Ghost AMR Riot won three awards in 2014 including the Red Dot Design Award.

RIOT-LinkCase: Invention of the currently patent pending RIOT-Link. So far there have been only a hand full of different patented rear-suspenion systems formountainbikesonthemarket.TheRIOT-Linkinanewuniquecombinationofmechanicalprinciples.Theshock-damperisfloating,thismeans it is moved from both sides. From the upper side it is moved by a rather linear working lever. Participation: Developed with colleague V. Ackermann. Patent pending by GHOST Bikes GmbH.

Worth mentioning: The RIOT-Link is used on the Ghost AMR Riot 2014.

Acros HubanatorCase: Engineering of a testing machine for bicycle hubs. Acros Sport GmbH needed a testing machine that would be able to test the complete function of all hubs they produce. The variable value is the amount of pressure on the axial direction of the hub, this simulates the unpredictable pressurethatcustomersuseforfixingthehubinthebike.

Participation: The complete engineering in SolidWorks.

Worth mentioning: After three years the Hubanator is still happily used at Acros Sport GmbH

09

Acros A-BB LightCase: Optimization of an existing product, reducing weight without loss in functionality and durability. The A-BB Light is a Bottom-Bracket for bicycles, the target group are people who tune their bikes, love weight reduction and are not afraid of a sales price of approximately 150 euro. The engineering resulted in a weight-reduction of over 50 percent on the aluminum bear-cups and by keeping the same steel-ceramic bearings the function is still guaranteed. The total weight is 84 grams and the A-BB Light is available in different anodized colors.

Participation: Complete development.

Worth mentioning: The A-BB Light is the lightest BSA Bottom Bracket on the market.

10

Acros A-Stem FR Case: New development including engineering, designing and prototyping a mountainbike stem for freeride use. The stem is the part that connectsthehandlebarstothefork,forcesarehigh,stressneedstoflowandthedesignisdeciding.Withonly145gramthestemisasuperlightmilledproductoutofaluminum.Smartproductionstepscreatetheaimeddesign,forexampletherefinedside-cutisproducedbyasimple30degreeangledfinger-mill.Prototypesareridingaround,massproductionandsalesareplanned.Theinnovativehandlebar-mountreducedstress in the handlebars and saves material in the stem.

Participation: Complete development including engineering, design, optimizing and testing.

Worth mentioning: The Acros A-Stem FR will be in the market soon.

11

Ghost E-NdureCase: Development of a concept E-bike. In 2009 E-Bikes became more and more popular, but only in urban-use. The target has been a studyofhowafutureendurobikecanlookwiththeadditionofanelectricdrivetrain.TheE-Ndurewasthefirstconcept-bikeandstoodatthe beginning of an era with E-Mountainbikes. The E-Ndure focused on integration of electric support in terrain usage, where off course new demands were important. Furthermore the bike was equipped with energy-regeneration functions. The paint on the frame, the suspension and thebrakesregeneratedenergythatwouldflowbackinthebattery-pack.

Participation: Complete concept-development, prototype-building and presentation.

Worth mentioning: The Ghost E-Ndure concept bike was presented on the Eurobike 2009 and attracted a lot of media attention.

12

Ghost WheelsCase: Development of wheel-hubs for mountainbike usage. The aim of the project was a set of hubs able to compete in terms of function and weight for a price under 48 USD. The design of the hubs, front and rear is made to be produced very fast. The machining-time for the body of the hubs is very short. This is achieved by a very affective shape that can be milled and turned on a CNC-machine in only a minimum amount of steps. The bodies of the hubs are made out of aluminum, forged and milled. The spoke pattern on the rear wheel is made for great torsional stiffness, the spoke pattern on the front wheel is made for both torsional stiffness as also radial stiffness. The result is a set of wheels that steer precise in the front and are stiff during accelerating and braking.

Participation: Successful bachelor graduation project including the complete design and engineering.

Worth mentioning: The wheels will be in the market soon.

OUTDOOR There are so many reasons to go outside and every time you are, there will be something new, small or big.

I do travel a lot and get the possibilities to see amazing nature, mountains, slopes and trails. Using chairlifts and cable-cars to get up the moun-tain is one of the best chances to get so much vertical in a short amount of time and at the same time a punch in nature‘s face. Enjoying it deeplyIdousethem, butalsoalwaysfindoutthatthemoreremoteplacesevenarebetter.

What I did and like to do: I - have ridden biketrials for four years, started riding downhill in 2008, raced XC races at an age of 13-14, am riding european cup elite DH top80, had several podiums on trials competitions, won a 4X race in the hobby men class, am guiding several weeks a year mountain-bikers trough the alps, love pump track riding, ride road bikes when its too cold to whip, did the last years 25-30 full days of snowboarding per season, love to hike up and board the powder down, run when time is running out and do exercises to keep up.

INSPIREIn life we experience a lot, we see things others do, we read words others write, we hear things others say. And the other way around; others see, read and hear what we do. In my opinion getting inspired and inspiring others are two of the most valuable things in life.

September 2013 - WE KNOWThe world wide web. We know everything and even if we do not know something, we know that we could know it really easy. We all live for certain adventure. Adventure gives us answers, we disco-ver, new-land called america or new music. I think life is meant to be a constant search, a search for enrichment, achieving things and enjoying both the result as also the journey.

In certain terms we are able to develop way faster because of the internet, but only as long as we use it as a tool. What I started with is that we know everything and that stops us from keeping our eyes and ears open. We‘re not paying attention to those who have experience or to things that are happening, why would we? If I want to know, I‘ll just google it. Keeping your eyes open also has something to do with initiating, if you want to achieve something you have to initiate. For me this closes a circle. Enjoying an expe-rience and a result by keeping your eyes open, listening and initia-ting.

We live in a modern world where our reach to information has becomeendless.Thereachtospecificinformationissomethinggreat, but we also have an endless reach to information that we

did not look for, did not ask about, but we appreciate to get. Spen-ding time on youtube clicking through some random videos is easy and we all do it, but it‘s so useless. Is useless bad? In this case definitelyyes.Thisstreamofinformationyoudidn‘tspecificallyaskfor only disturbs your experience, your adventure to achieve so-mething. - Ruben Torenbeek

July 2013 - RIGHT OR WRONGStop thinking in right and wrong, life is not a switch to on or off. In the end the word right is only a simple answer on a question that‘s complicated. The words right and wrong only help us to stop thin-king about a certain topic. - Ruben Torenbeek

June 2013 - CLIMATEThe worst spring ever? The extreme weather is caused by climate change and the number one reason for climate change is the meat industry. So if you still close your eyes and live your life the easiest way, know that you are the reason why earth is going to shit.

And one more thing, it‘s not about trying to be perfect or so-mething, it‘s about reducing and even more important, we need to think and open our eyes.

Think about what you eat. - Ruben Torenbeek

April 2013 - BREAKFASTAs I was sitting at the breakfast I knew it was the last time, the last timeiwassittingthere.ThefirsttimeIrealizedwhatIwasdoingand I can explain it by what I saw. I was having an overdone break-fast in the Grand Hyatt Hotel in some asian country on the 32nd floorsittingnexttotheglasswallwhereIlookeddown.Nexttothehotelwasariver,arivercompletelyblackandamanwasfloa-ting around on a small boat catching everything waisted, trying to findsomethinguseable.ThevisualfactthatI,with23years-eventhough the age does not matter at all- was sitting far above this man trying to survive an inhuman way was too much for me.

The system makes us believe that the difference in what we have is a result of how hard we work, how good we are, but do you really think this man has been lazy? People can answer it with ‚it matters where you‘re born‘, and thats partly true, it also has a lot to do with other things like mental abilities, chances etc. But the most important thing is that the ‚whatever-reasons‘ are not satisfy-ing the facts. - Ruben Torenbeek

February 2013 - BORED?It‘s as if the current generation is laying in pillows, thinking eve-rything couldn‘t be better, but not realizing we‘re only using up the luxury ‚we‘ saved over the last 50 years. Not in a way of using up all the oil, but really waisting everything around us, we take eve-rything for granted! It really takes a lot of time to realize how much we actually take for granted, the easiest way is comparing with our grandparents 50 years ago, what was normal for them? or maybe even better; what did people do, have and use 200 years ago? 200 years? we think it‘s a long time ago only because the gap in life-style has become so big, not because the time has been so long, 200 years, thats nothing.

Think of all the things you achieved and all the highs and lows in the past months or years, they were probably all during something youinitiated.‚We‘arethefirstgenerationthathasthepossibilitytosee hear and feel kind of everything, we can do everything at the same time, think about it. The problem we don‘t realize is that this possibility is paralyzing our lives. We think we need to see, hear and feel everything that comes on our way and it already takes too much energy and time to keep up with everything, but what is it good for? We can be riding a car, listening to the news, writing someone in whatsapp, scrolling through Facebook and watching advertisements along the road all at the same time, for what? We cangostudying,working,beingsocialofflineandonline,trave-ling, doing sports, sharing hobbies, we can do everything. Does it wonder you that you‘re tired at the end of the day, mentally? Does it wonder you that people aren‘t creative anymore? We take eve-rything that comes on our way for necessary, we use our brains for inputonly(weallwilldieaswalkingwikipedias).

What is the last time you were bored? Do you realize that being bored is just brilliant? Not bored because the movie was lame, but that you just didn‘t have anything to do. Being bored pushes you to use your brain to actually do something yourself, to initiate, to go out, to achieve something, small or big, to see, hear and feel highs and lows. People are scared of being bored and solution are so easy nowadays, it‘s for example called ‚social media‘. - Ruben Torenbeek
