ACCME Accreditation

Baylor College of Medicine has been resurveyed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and awarded accreditation with commendation for six years as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians.

Continuing Medical Education

The educational activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. CME represents that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public.

AMA Physician’s Recognition Award 

The AMA only authorizes organizations that are accredited by the ACCME,referred to as accredited CME providers, to designate and award AMA PRA 

Category 1 Credit™ to physicians.

Division of Continuing Professional Development (DCPD) is the central administrative office for continuing medical education (CME) activities, and coordinates and implements policies with input from the CME Standing Committee to ensure compliance with ACCME guidelines and standards.

Definitions and Terms

• Program of CME: The provider’s CME activities and functions taken as a whole.

• CME Activity: An educational offering that is planned, implemented, and evaluated in accordance with the ACCME Accreditation Criteria, Standards for Commercial Support, and policies; the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award CME credit system standards and policies; and the AMA Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs pertinent opinions. 

• Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS).  A course planned as a series with multiple, ongoing sessions, e.g., offered weekly, monthly, or quarterly; and is primarily planned by and presented to the accredited organization’s professional staff. Examples include grand rounds, tumor boards, and morbidity and mortality conferences.

• Session: An educational offering within an RSS activity.

ACCME: Fundamental Values

1. The CME industry’s interest in the health and well being of the public is more important than any economic interest. 

2. Some economic interests of CME providers, or their agents, are substantial enough to be in conflict with this public interest.

3. If a conflict of interest is present, it must be managed in a manner that is in the best interest of the public.

Disclosure of Relevant Financial Relationships with Commercial Interests

Baylor  College  of Medicine  (BCM)  is  accredited  by  the  Accreditation  Council  for  Continuing Medical  Education (ACCME®)  to  provide  continuing medical  education  for  physicians.  In  order  to  ensure  the  independence  of  CME activities  from  commercial  influence/promotional  bias,  the  ACCME  requires  that  providers  must  be  able  to demonstrate that: 1) everyone in a position to control the content of a CME activity has disclosed relevant financial relationships with commercial interests to the provider; 2) provider has implemented a mechanism to manage/resolve any conflicts of interest identified; and 3) financial relationships with commercial interests are disclosed to the learners prior  to  the  beginning  of  the  educational  activity.  The  learners must  also  be  informed  if  no  relevant  financial relationships exist.
