INTRODUCTION The footscan® balance system is developed to perform state-of-the-art pressure measurements, for basic, clinical or scientific use. User friendly software creates the opportunity to have accurate and reliable pressure and timing data in no time.

Besides the pressures during unroll of the foot, the footscan® balance system provides information on the displacement of the center of force.

This user guide provides a reference to all features of the footscan® balance software.

Please refer to the footscan® entry level USB2 system Installation guide Balance software for the installation and initial start-up.

This software is compatible with the legacy footscan® USB1 system.

Enjoy your footscan® balance system.

3 System

Threshold level: when the Measure button in the

Stability screen is clicked, the footscan® plate will start scanning but no data is recorded. The data recording will start when the overall pressure reaches the preset threshold level. The range is 0-255 AD, where 255 is the maximum level of one discreet sensor contact and AD is the unit (digital representation of the measured signal). If the threshold level is set to 0, the data recording starts immediately on initial contact. Serial number: the serial number of the connected

footscan® entry level USB2 plate will be displayed. This serial number is essential when you contact RSscan International for support.

Database location: by default, the footscan® measurements database will be stored in the database

folder within the settings folder of the footscan® entry level balance software. The database folder

can be relocated to another hard drive location or a network drive to access footscan® measurements from other computers in the network. When the database folder is relocated, enter the new path or click Browse to select the location of the folder.

When the software is updated, verify the database location and relocate if necessary. It is advised to backup the database periodically and prior to each software update.

4 Operation

Recording speed – recording time: the maximum

recording speed for a footscan® entry level USB2 system is 300 Hertz or frames/second. Maximum 1000 frames can be recorded. Select the recording speed and corresponding recording time from the dropdown list.

5 Stability

A balance measurement can be divided into maximum six sections or intervals for easier analysis. Number of intervals: enter the number of intervals (1-6). Click Reset to reset to six identical intervals. The intervals can be set in two ways:

• Click and drag the green dotted lines.

• Select the interval (1-6) from the dropdown list and use the left and right arrow buttons to change.

Delay before measurement: enter the time delay before the start of the measurement (milliseconds).

6 Software Synchronization Tool

The Software Synchronization Tool (SST) enables synchronized display of measurement data from two

platforms, for example footscan®

pressure measurement data and third party video capture data. Both applications and their data can be located on the same PC or on two PC’s in a network. The third party software has to be compatible with the Software Synchronization Tool (SST). Contact RSscan International for further information. SST controller enabled: check this checkbox to enable the Software Synchronization Tool (SST).

When enabled, the footscan® balance software will react to commands from the Software Synchronization Tool (SST). Local server: check this checkbox to use this PC for both applications. Server IP number: enter the IP address of the PC where the second application is located. Local IP: shows the IP address of this PC.

7 Recalibration

Recalibration factor: the recalibration factor is calculated automatically during the weight scaling calibration. It can be altered manually if required. Calibration file: shows the calibration file used with

the connected footscan® plate.

STABILITY

The stability or balance measurement is a dynamic measurement capturing the pressure distribution under the patient’s feet and the displacement of the center of force (COF) while the patient is standing

on the footscan® plate. Before you take your first stability measurement, make sure the footscan® system is configured and weight calibration is done.

Taking a stability measurement

1 Select a patient in the patients selection box on the database screen. Click the Stability button.

When a measurement is selected in the measurements selection box on the database screen, that measurement will

be displayed on the stability screen.

2 Enter the weight of the patient and select the shoe size from the dropdown list. Click OK when finished.

3 Measure button. Click to start the measurement. Press ‘Escape’ to cancel. The actual recording of the measurement starts after the preset delay and ends when the maximum measurement time has elapsed. Note that the preview mode is enabled by default and will be disabled when the measure button is clicked.

When the measurement is completed, a wide range of analytical options is at your disposal to interpret the measurement.

Blue representing the lowest pressure, red representing the highest pressure. Black represents absence of pressure. The dotted line shows the displacement of the center of force (COF) during the measurement.

2 The yellow divider line(s) can be used to divide the image into sections. The number of divider lines depends on the Quadrant settings. Click and drag the divider lines to change the divisions.

3 Maximum pressure indicator. The blue bar indicates the maximum pressure on the foot relative to the full range. Click and drag to change the color scaling of the images.

4 Numerical information on the measurement.

Center of force curves The center of force curves show the displacement of the center of force in the X (blue) and Y (red) directions. The X-axis shows the time in ms. The blue bar indicates the position of the current frame of the dynamic image relative to the total measurement. When paused, click and drag the blue bar or click the up or down arrows to scroll through the frames. The dotted green lines indicate the intervals, click and drag to change the intervals.

Force curves The force curves show the vertical force in N (Newton) for each of the sections. The X-axis shows the time in ms. The blue curve shows the total force.

Training

Select an exercise on the training exercise list. Make sure the patient has a good view on the exercise screen.

1 The drawing of the exercise and, when the patient

is standing on the footscan® plate, the measured pressure in real time.

2 The time (in seconds) related to the position of the COF cursor on the drawing.

3 The color scale of the pressure measurement.

4 Measure. Have the patient stand on the footscan® plate (with one or two feet, depending on the intended exercise).

Let the patient find his balance until the measured COF (yellow crosshair) is positioned at the start of the exercise. Click the Measure button to start the exercise. When the measure button is clicked, the exercise pattern (COF displacement) might be scaled to fit within the currently measured area.

The object of the exercise is to have the patient change his balance so that the COF of the measurement (yellow crosshair) follows the green cursor (indicating the progress of the exercise). The measurement will end when the exercise pattern is completed.
