Documentation NomenclatureThis manual uses the following protocol to present information:

Bold characters set apart keystrokes that must be pressed on the keyboard ornumeric keypad for a defined action or input.

Italicized characters set apart computer generated screens or boxes on the monitor

or display that require a response from the user.

The <Keyname> notation refers to a specific key on the keyboard or keypad. Forexample, <Ctrl> refers to a control key labeled “Ctrl.”

The <Keyname1> + <Keyname2> notation means that two keys must be

pressed at the same time. The user does this by holding down one key and pressingthe other key. Situations in which this occurs usually include the <Shift>, <Alt>,

or the <Ctrl> keys.

The DOS® Operating System, used on IBM® and compatible computers, does not

differentiate between upper and lower case characters. DOS commands in this

manual appear in lower case and bold type.

Microsoft WindowsThe expression “click” instructs the user to push the left button on the computermouse when the curser is over the referenced Window button displayed on the

screen.

The phrase “choose” followed by a command in bold text means that the cursor is

to be moved to the command in question and left-mouse click.

A trailing right bracket followed by another command indicates to highlight the firstcommand, move the cursor to the right, and highlight the second command. For

example:

Choose File > Open filename

Data ConventionsIn certain instances, this manual sets specific information aside from the normal

format of the text. This is done to attract the attention of the reader. This manualuses the terms, “Note,” “Caution” and “Warning.”

Note: The note highlights information that benefits the reader.

Caution: A caution denotes conditions under which lack of care or attention to

instruc tions cou ld result in damage to equipment.

WARNI NG: A w arning tells of a situation in w hich lack of care orattention to instructions could result in injury or death to

personnel.

RPC Explorer User Manual

March 2007 1BM-RPCEXPL-00 / Rev. A

Introduction

RPC ExplorerTM is a standalone software program that communicates directly with a

Rod Pump Controller (RPC). RPC Explorer has the ability to upload and download

parameter values to the Rod Pump Controller and replaces RPC Configuration

Manager Software. This document defines how to use the RPC Explorer program and was written forPart Number PC54-00019-00. Please check eProduction Solutions® (eP) customer

website at www.ep-solutions.com to ensure you have the latest manual updatesand software version.

Features

RPC Explorer has the following features:

•  Ability to Display, Save, Replay and Print Dynagraph card data

•  Remote Keypad display

•  Upload and Download Parameter database

•  Error/Fault Status display

•  Load vs. Time display

•  Parameter Group displays, including Analog Input, Air Balance, Cycle Runtime,

Daily Runtime, Digital Input/Output (DIO), Load, Pump Off Control (POC),Sensors, RPC Setup, and RPC Status

•  Direct communication through RS-232, Radio, CDPD or Network

Compatibility

RPC Explorer software is designed for Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The data

format of RPC Explorer is compatible to the standard windows editor and/or

spreadsheet. RPC Explorer communicates via eP proprietary protocols, 8500 or8550, and is compatible with RPCs using one of these methods.

Product Usage

The software can be used to configure and monitor the following Rod Pump

Controllers made by eProduction Solutions:

•  RPC 8xxx Series (“xxx” can be any number)

•  M-2000 (All versions)•  ePIC

Management Utilities

Well Management

To help identify different wells, RPCExplorer lists them first by company

and then by location. Each companymay contain many locations. Each

location may contain many wells. Thelists appear on the left side of the initial

screen. They are alphanumeric andhave a hierarchy of company, location

and then well.

Companies, locations and wells areconfigured independently, and can be saved, renamed, copied, pasted, and deleted.

File Management

To ease data retrieval, each company, location, and well created in RPC Explorer isrepresented by a directory with the same name. These directories fall under themain directory where RPC Explorer is installed. If RPC Explorer is installed under

your Program Files in a directory titled “eProduction Solutions Inc,” for example,

data files related to a specific well are stored in that well’s directory, as follows:

•  C:\Program Files\eProduction Solution Inc\RPCExplorer\Company\Location\Well\ Filename (“Filename” is the user-definedname of the data file)

•  Using the picture above as an example, a file for the highlighted unit, “8800 Unit#3,” can be found under the RPC Explorer Install Directory, as follows:

•  …\Shevronico\West Plain\8800 Unit #3\Filename

Dynagraph files are stored in a separate directory, titled “Dynagraph,” under thewell directory, as follows:

•  …\Company\Location\Well\Dynagraph\Filename

NOTE: All file names should be meaningful enough to be easily identified.

location file may need to be created.

6.  Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each location desired.

Well (RPC) Setup

When referring to a well, RPC Explorer regards the well and it’s RPC as a singleitem. When adding a well, the RPC’s address, type, and protocol are necessary.

Additional information about the RPC’s method of communication is used toconfigure a well. RPC Explorer can communicate with the RPC serially through a

hardwire connection, or remotely by using the Internet, a CDPD modem, or an

analog modem. If the communication method changes or is not known at the timeof setup, it can be added or changed at a later time. However, communication with

the RPC will not be achieved until this information is correct.

Adding a Well

A well is added to RPC Explorer by configuring it using the Well Properties screendescribed under Well Configurations Screens on the following pages. To locate theWell Properties screen, perform the following steps:

1.  From the list of Company Names in the white column on the left side of the

initial screen, select the company to which the RPC/well belongs. When thecorrect company name is highlighted, click on it to open the list of locations

under it.

NOTE: The Well Properties screen can be invoked and updated at your convenience.

Well Configuration Screens

A well is added to RPC Explorer by configuring it in the Well Properties screen

shown below. RPC Explorer creates a directory for a well once this screen is

complete.

If the RPC and RPC Explorer communicate using a hardwired or direct method, the

Serial Properties screen is also used. If the well and RPC Explorer communicate

through a remote (i.e. TCP/IP) connection, the Dial Up Properties screen is used(see instructions on the following pages).

Communication parameters used during well configuration are typically found in the

600 block of all eP RPCs.

Well Properties

•  Well Name: A user-defined name for the well. The well name should be

meaningful enough to be easily identified at a later time.

•  Well Type: This refers tothe type of RPC that thewell uses. Choices are

8500, 8750, 8800, M2000,

ePic, and iBeam.

March 2007 11BM-RPCEXPL-00 / Rev. A

•  Well Timeout (ms): This is

the time allotted for eachcommunication attempt

between RPC Explorer andthe RPC/well. The default

value is 3000ms.

•  Well Address: The number

inserted here must be

identical to the value (0 to4094) in the Address

Parameter of the RPC unit.

This parameter is typicallythe second parameter (P2) in the RPC and may be labeled “CommunicationAddress,” “Device Address” or “Station Address.” The default number is 1.

•  Connect Retries: This is the number of connection attempts allowed before

communication stops and a “communication failure” message is displayed. TheDefault is 3.

Page 18: Rpc Explorer

RPC Explorer User Manual

•  Protocol : This is the dialect used to communicate with the well (either BK8500

or 8550) and corresponds to the protocol used by the eP RPC. Refer to your RPC

User Manual to find the protocol to use. The default protocol is eP 8550.

•  Dial Up/Internet : Check this box if using a network or remote communication

media.

Close: Terminates well configuration without saving data.

Apply: Saves all currently displayed entries.

NOTE: If necessary data is not shown during well configuration, such as absent “well types” onthe Well Properties screen, then RPC Explorer needs to be re-installed with the “MDACPatch” option selected. The MDAC patch repairs corrupted database access files and isrecommended if a database access problem is observed.

Serial Properties

This sets the communication parameters for the program in order to communicatewith the Unit.

•  Port : This is thecommunication port used

by your computer for

communication with theRPC. It is selectable from

COM1 to COM20 anddefaults to COM1.

•  Baud Rate: Baud rate isselectable from 300, 600,

1200, 2400, 4800, 9600,19200, 38400, 56000,

115200 and must matchthe setting in your RPC.Check your RPC User

Manual for the properbaud rate. The default is

9600.

•  Parity : This should match the parity of the RPC unit. Choose from None, Odd, or

Even. “None” is the default.

•  Flow : This should match the flow of the RPC unit. Choose from None, Hardware,or Modem. “None” is the default.

•  Data Bit : 7, 8 (8 is the default)

•  Stop Bit (s): 1, 2. Most RPCs use 1 stop bit (the default) when communicating,

but 2 may be required. Check your RPC User Manual for the required stop bits.

•  RTS Hold : This is the time period, in milliseconds, that a “Request to Send” message is held. Holding a RTS message prevents a message from being

received immediately after transmission. The default is 0.

RPC Communication

A properly configured Well Controller can communicate with the RPC Explorer

directly through a hardwire connection or remotely through TCP/IP or modem

technologies. A Well Controller can be configured before or after a connection hasbeen setup.

The standard communication media between RPC Explorer and the RPC is RS-232.

Depending on the RPC, RPC Explorer communicates via eP’s 8500 or 8550protocol. RPC Explorer does not have Modbus functionality.

Serial/Hardwire Connection

RPC Explorer, once installed on your computer, can connect serially to the RPC usinga cable that links the Com Port of your computer into the RJ48C modem port of the

File formats

The RPC Explorer dynagraph card formats are as follows:

.CDF (CAC Format)

This format is inherited from previous RPC Explorer versions:

Table 2: CAC Format

1st line: total_number_of_points ‘number of points

2nd line: number_of_Cards ‘0 = full buffer (from 8500)3rd line: card_type: ‘1 = percent, 0 = load

4th line: collection_type; ‘0 = startup, 1 = shutdown, 3 = live, 4 = event, 5 = fault

(this comes from the 8500 protocol)5th line to end of file: position, load ‘position in (percent * 254), load in (percent * 254) or

pounds

.CDF Format from old RPC Configuration ManagerRPC Explorer will detect if the card was saved using the old RPC Configuration

manager and will now allow the replay of that card type.

.DYN (RodDiag)

RPC Explorer format is based on the Theta Enterprises format on the website) each

Print command below shows what goes on a single line:

Table 3: RodDiag Format Print Command Line

At line 1:Print totalCardPoints 'number of pos/load pairs

For each point

Print pos, load ‘print pos, load (calculated using stroke length and

percent)

Print "0" 'cbe flag (no cbe)

'cbe skipped

'dimensionless cbe pos skipped

Print "0" 'measured strokes per minute (is 0, not required)

Print stroke_length 'measured stroke length (required)

Print "0" 'Traveling valve load (not measured)

Print "0" 'Standing valve load (not measured)

Print "1" 'date flag (1 = next line exists, 0 = date line doesn’t exist)

Print date 'date

Print "0" 'percent runtime (not available)

Print "1" 'wellname flag (1 = next line exists, 0 = name lineskipped)

Print well_name 'well name

Print "0" 'load measurment device type (0 is default)

Print "0" 'position measurment device type (0 is default)

RPC explorer always outputs .DYN files with this format. When reading .DYN files,

the RPC explorer will read a file when the optional values are or are not present.

Dynagraph cards can only be saved in Nabla or RodDiag when the ‘loads’ option is

selected in RPC Explorer. Percent cards cannot be saved because Nabla andRodDiag both use the lbs scale.
