January: We are revving up for the Juzt Jazz concert, February 5th in the small gym at 7:30, the

Wonderful Winds concert March 6th at 7:30 in the large gym, and the Strings Extrava-

ganza at 7:00 on March 12th at Centennial Theatre!

On March 15th a big group of us head off to Italy on the Music and Art tour, a short 9

weeks away! The Italy pre-trip meeting is January 29th at 7:30 in the music room.

MUSIC NOTES

The Sweet Music Concert was oh so very sweet with

all music ensembles performing and baked treats on

the side. Thank you to all the parents and students

for their contributions of time, baking skills, and

purchasing! It is our biggest fundraiser of the year.

A special thank you to the organizing parents, the

emcee-John Whyte (his last year) and all those who came out to put up the decora-

tions, the tables and such. Thank you to the Tech crew for their fine work!

Choir, Band, and Strings students braved the rain and the cold and played or sang

Christmas music in the village on two Saturdays in December. After playing for the

shoppers they enjoyed La Galleria sandwiches (delicious) and Delany's hot drinks

(yummy)! The businesses of the village made a donation to the school music pro-

gram. Great work everyone!

STUDENT COUNCIL

Hello members of the Handsworth community! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and are all excited about 2019 at Handsworth. Last year was jam-packed and full of events. In September, we held a BBQ and a dance with a DJ for all of the Grade 8s and their retreat leaders. We also organized Club Day for 23 clubs. In October, we had a fun week of Halloween excitement which included apple bobbing, a costume contest, and a Haunted House. In November, the Student Council held its first Royal Games event of the school year, which is an inclusive school activity for a chosen charity: this year for the North Shore Youth Safe House. The senior Grade 12 students faced off in a tight soccer match against the teachers with a final score of 8-5 for the students. Overall, the match raised a total of $214. December was busy! Throughout the entire month, the student council planned and advertised our new twist on the annual Santa’s Breakfast, which we called Santa’s Fair! For the past few years, the Student Coun-cil has traditionally organized a morning breakfast on the last day of school for students and staff of Handsworth and the Grade 2s of neigh-bouring elementary schools. Just last year, we invited the Grade 8s Re-treat Leaders to join the breakfast as well to create a comfortable envi-ronment for the grade 8s to reconnect with their camp leaders. To change things up this year, we incorporated a craft fair into the break-fast where clubs, marketing classes, communication classes, and di-verse learners all came together with the Student Council. Separately from Santa’s Fair, the council also sold candy-cane grams to people who wished to send a lovely candy cane with a positive message to their friends and teachers. All proceeds made went to the Harvest Project with the final collection from both the fair and candy cane grams com-ing to $1783.92. Conclusively, December was a huge success! Since the New Year has just begun, the Student Council will be working hard from the beginning. Life in January can be challenging. The wet weather tends to bring people down and returning to school can be a hard adjustment. Starting from January 21, there will be volleyball games going on in the large gym during lunch and flex time as our wellness event and the second Royal Games activity. Both students and staff will be able to get into teams of 6-10 players and participate in the volleyball tournament. Sign up will be on the Handsworth Instagram page @handsworth_royals, SnapChat account @hssroyalss and the school website. We highly encourage everyone to join in the volleyball fun. It always has and will be an honour for me to be a Royal. I hope every-one has had a great start to 2019, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our future events.
