Medical practitioners and students may avail themselves of the opportunities of acquiring the information afforded by this hospital, where lectures are regularly given, and where a room is appropriated for the reception of casts and models. This course is illustrated by a good museum of preparations,and by an excellent obstetric apparatus, upon which, on daysset apart, the operations of midwifery are demonstrated by thelecturer, and practised by the student himself.

In accordance with the regulations of the examining boards,ample opportunities in practical midwifery, and under thedirect superintendence of Dr. Davis, are afforded, at the ap-pointed period of the student’s attendance, with the advantageof his teacher’s advice, and assistance at the bedside, in allcases of doubt, difficulty, or danger. REGULATIONs regarding degrees in medicine and surgery, Ito candidates entering the university in, or subsequent to, I1839-40:&Lstrok; ,

MEDICINE.

Every candidate for a medical degree must lodge with theclerk of senate-

I. A certificate of moral character, bv two respectablepersons, with evidence of having attained the age of twenty-one.

II. Evidence of having attended, for four years, an uni-versity in which medicine is regularly taught, or medical lec-tures delivered, in London or Dublin; and at least one year ofthe four must be spent at the University of Glasgow. In eachyear he must have attended at least two courses of lectures ofsix months’ duration; but if he shall spend one year only atthe University of Glasgow, then he must attend three coursesof lectures delivered there, two of them at least being of sixmonths’ duration.

III. Certificates of having attended one or more courses oflectures on the following subjects; each course, except forensicmedicine and botany, being of six months’ duration; if of lessextent, then two courses shall be deemed equivalent to one ofsix months :-Anatomy and physiology, chemistry, the theoryor institutes of medicine, practice of medicine, materia medicaand pharmacy, midwifery surgery, forensic medicine, andbotany,* anatomical dissections, and two years’ practice of ageneral hospital containing eighty beds, and in which thestudent must spend at least one-half of his period attending inthe physicians’ wards.

Neither hospital attendance nor anatomical dissections shallbe considered as equivalent to a course of lectures.

IV. Each candidate must lodge with the clerk of senate,with the above certificates, a schedule of his course of study,properly filled up; together with an English essay on somemedical subject chosen by himself, two months before thetime of graduation; that is, on or before the lst of March,or the 10th of June, yearly, otherwise he cannot be admittedfor examination till the following term. All tickets ofattendance lodged by candidates must be certified, not ex-cepting those of the current session; but the certified botanicaltickets of the current session shall not be received until the1st of April.V. No student entered in any medical class later than the

1st of December, without special permission of the senate.And it is strictly required of every candidate for graduation,that he produce evidence of his name having been enrolled inthe library book, on or before that day, as well as an expresscertificate of his regular attendance, by each professor onwhose lectures he attends. In order further to insure attend-ance, all students must inscribe their names, once a fortnight,in a register kept for the purpose, stating the lectures &c.which they attend.VI. Every candidate shall prove that he has a competent

knowledge of Latin, and shall undergo full examinations on allthe subjects included in the curriculum.

. SURGERY.

I. The regulations respecting certificates of age and moralcharacter are the same as those under the head of degrees inmedicine.

I II. Candidates for the degree of master of surgery shallproduce evidence that they have attended medical lectures inone or other of the universities or schools already specified,for four years, during which they must have attended one ormore courses on the following subjects; the extent of eachcourse, with the exception of forensic medicine, being sixmonths; or the equivalent two courses of a shorter duration.The candidate must have attended not less than three coursesof medical lectures in the University of Glasgow. In eachyear of his study he shall have attended at least two or morecourses of lectures, of six months’ duration, on anatomy,surgery, chemistry, theory or institutes of medicine, practiceof medicine, midwifery, materia medica and pharmacy, forensicmedicine, anatomical dissections, and two years’ practice of ageneral hospital, in which the student must attend one-half ofthe prescribed period in the surgical wards, and the other halfin the medical.

III. The regulations as to lodging certificates of attendance,with an essay, in English, and as to the candidate’s knowledgeof Latin, are the same as under the head of medical degrees,only the essay is to be on a surgical subject.The days of graduation are the last Wednesday of April, and

the first Wednesday of August.
