Each primary school has their target to make sure the school will get the best result in UPSR.Parents RoleAs a parent, there are advantages and disadvantages when examination results become an indicator for the successful school especially UPSR.The examination results of primary schools were compared, charted, published in league tables and distributed to all primary schools in the district at least. The implication of the league table on the schools was detrimental. Parents, in the first place, wanted to send their pupils to the most effective schools (as judged against the examination results) as they wanted their children to pass in the examination. Good effective schools, to them, would be those schools with more pupils scoring five As in the UPSR.As the over-riding concern was on the examination, primary schools therefore focussed on the examination classes; i.e., Year Six pupils. parents expected the extra classes to be held, and they were ever willing to send their children to those classes. They were held in afternoons, evenings, weekdays, and weekends and during school holidays, paid or on voluntary basis. Disadvantages Parents fear of low selfesteem/loss motivation with poor results There also fear in parents that if their children are not getting good results, it could demotivate and lead to low selfesteem too. Studies on mindset by Prof, Carol Dweck, Stanford University have showed that what makes a person to loss motivation is not poor results, it has everything to do with the mind-set that they have.Similarly, the self-esteem movement has created unnecessary troubles for parents and children. We want our children to have high self-esteem and therefore be motivated and be successful. Much has been discussed about the leaked papers from the perspective of the relevant authorities actions and students despairs, however, we need to understand and perhaps gain insights into parents dilemma, fears and challenges in order for us to deal with the root cause. As the sayings, as long as there is demand, there will be supply. After all, it has been said that leaked papers have been going on for many years; it was simply because it was blown over the top this year due to the power of social media that it is no longer tolerated. As the sayings, as long as there is demand, there will be supply. Hence, it is obvious that the demand comes from parents who want their children to achieve good results in their UPSR examination. It is the mantra win at all cost. As parent would be better off having the peace of mind that your child will grow up as a responsible, resilient and resourceful person in face of life challenges and set-backs. As the sayings, you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime."2. Teach skills and strategies Does your child have the appropriate learning skills and strategies? What about their time management and how they could they learn in a more effective ways and for better understanding? Would they learn better by experimenting? These are the areas that parents need to focus on; so that their children have learning skills and strategies that suits their own natural strength.3. Encourage positive behaviour Pay attention to those behaviours that you desire. Do you notice those moments when they have completed their homework or task ahead of time or asked for help proactive. 5. Validate their effort Praise them for their effort, their skills and strategies. Phrases such as, Well done, you work hard for it, You must have put in plenty of effort/thoughts would go a long way to instil the mental fortitude and a positive growth mindset for your children. Bottom line? With the 5 STEPS Learning Process (STEP-V), your child would be better off as a person who are selfmotivated, resilient and resourceful in dealing with life challenges. You, as parent would be better off having the peace of mind that your child will grow up as a responsible, resilient and resourceful person in face of life challenges and set-backs. As the sayings, you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime."
