Round 12
It was pleasing to hear of some great team results from the weekend. There were a few big wins as some teams start to tune up for finals. Conversely, there were a few teams who tried their absolute hardest yet fell short of kicking a winning score. No matter the results, you’re all champions to the parents, committee and myself because you go out every week and try your best. That’s all anybody can ask for, try your best, look to assist your team mates and focus on improving just that little bit more each week as a player.
We all want to be winners every week, but what does this really mean. I believe to be part of a team, be part of a great club and to be part of a community is a true winner. Life and sport is not only about what we personally learn but, I think, more importantly how we impact on those around us. I’ve had reason to reflect about life, community, a person’s ability to give and the footprints we leave on this earth. The last few days have been a bit heavier than normal. My father left this world on Sunday but the ripples from his footprints will be forever felt. Whilst never a great footballer he was a true champion due to the legacy of impact he leaves behind. He was my teacher in life, family, sport and business. He taught honesty, humility, to persevere, be determined and above all else be persistent. If a door closes, never give up, keep knocking because eventually, a door will be opened to you, he used to say.
He was a man strong enough to stand up for what he believed in. He was an absolute gentleman, an astute businessman and never stopped learning. It’s amazing how we can show how much life and sport mirror each other.
The challenges we face in life revolve around ‘culture’. The culture of an individual, a team, the club and the local community. In life as in sport, we need to be empathetic, have an understanding of others (teammates) challenges in life whilst having the ability to reflect on our and their actions. To be able to remain true to yourself and observe what’s occurring around us is the true test of culture and our character. So, lets work on ourselves, develop our skills and leave a true impact on others of who we are and let our ripples forever reach outwards. Too often as young people we are influenced by what others say and in particular we listen to what people say we can’t do.
The most difficult aspect of life is comparing ourselves against others. Our attitude and values and support of others can be tested each week on the sports oval. So stop being limited by others, listen to your coaches, life mentors and be all you can be. Be who you really are apply what you learn from life (including each game played) to constantly grow as an individual with a positive impact on others. NOW that’s what I call a true winner.
Be the best you can be, get up with a good outlook each day and be proactive in achieving your goals regularly. Take a moment to reflect on what you’re doing and how you’re doing it and if need be, ask for assistance. All our players will be stretched over the next two weeks as the season comes to a conclusion. For those members lucky enough to reach finals, ask
how you can do that little bit more to support your teammates and grow within. Look forward to being tested and handling the opportunity to climb the mountains that confront us each week in both life and sport.
Thank you.

Round 14 on the 11th August will see us complete 50 year events at the Sharks. We as a committee are going to try something a bit different. Our Colts teams play at Domeney at 1.00pm and 3.00pm. Our two U16 youth girls play at Stintons at 1.00pm and 3.00pm. Accordingly to accommodate some of our younger teams (Auskick to U10’s) we are going to kick off around 3.00pm. We encourage all our younger members to please get down to the grounds and support our older age teams. For most of our Colts Red it will be their last home and away game at 3.00pm for the junior club. For everyone else, if you can make it early great, if not don’t worry burger night will kick on till normal time. Great chance to celebrate the end of the home and away season and wish those who have made finals all the best. It’s also our “thank you” night to all our sponsors for 2019. The club will provide complimentary food and drink to various sponsors as a way of saying thanks.

Park Orchards 3-7-25 def Beverley Hills 0-1-1
This week we took on neighbouring Beverley Hills, always a tight tussle and today was another tense battle.
Firstly, to Lenny from the U9Red and Flynn from the U8 who helped us out this week with a couple boys getting away with their family for some sunshine and warm air.
Both boys played great games and contributed all game.
Lenny on the wing did a great job reading the game and positioning himself perfectly everytime to either defend or attack and link up and drive the ball forward.
Flynn up forward was not afraid to mix it with the big boys and won himself some hand ball gets, unlucky as he was about to break forward and kick a goal but the umpire picked out a free kick to Beverley Hills.
Well done boys and thanks for your help.
Kai was todays captain and playing out of the goal square in the first half provided us with a strong target up forward, Kai battled hard all day and did a great job as captain.
Todays game was very scrappy with both sides not getting much space to work in, the boys are use to the open space Stintons provides that they can use their pace once we win it on the inside then spread the opposition.
The game was played predominantly between the half back lines with the sharks getting more forward entries but being unable to take full advantage, to many bomb kicks rush out of the packs when a couple quick handballs to a free outside runner to be able to hit a target would have been better suited.
Trying to do to much at times when under pressure when we should have been looking for a teammate in a better position, especially around goal.
Quarter time was a great to remind the boys about moving the ball quickly and trying to find a teammate either by hand or foot and making sure we kept the ball moving in the pack.
As we started to adjust to the game we started to move the ball more freely, with some strong over head work and pace on the ground we had some key moments we hit the score board.
Xavier & Lenny were told to take the game on and provide run and carry and see if could drive the ball over the BH defenders and into space. Prest to stay around half forward and provide an option to stop BH talls marking the ball and defending across half back, this gave us the chance to set up behind the ball and keep it forward and eventually Darcy marked went back and kicked a goal to open the account for the sharks. With Xavier starting to get in top around the wing he marked strongly across the centre and took off without hesitation and delivered to Prest who moved the ball quickly to Liam who kicked our second.
Julian was having a great quarter around the midfield roving well around the ruck and Paddy was getting clear and getting first hands on the ball.
Caption is thanks to Lenny who tore it up on the wing and Nugget who was in and under in forward line.
THE SHARK ATTACK 12 Edition 12, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 13 Edition 12, 2019
The third quarter was much like the first but we had more ball forward but just couldn’t capitalise, Thomas was unlucky hitting the post with a clean snap and a couple moments when we were just about to run onto a free ball only for it to bounce just out of reach and give BH time to get back a defend.
Going into the last we set ourselves the target of 2 goals, but again we just couldn’t take a break and started to fall into the trap of going wide again. We dominated field position with the ball staying most of the quarter between the centre and our forward line.
It looked like we were going to go goalless until the ever mercurial Ollie Lanza kicked a long range banana from the pocket.
Looking back on the game the boys dominated for large patches and credit to BH they stuck at it and kept up the pressure all game and never gave up. We need to stick to the basic such as sharing the ball and looking for each other, move quickly in attack and find a man and slow the opposition up when defending.
We need to work on setting good habits so when under pressure our good habits take over not the bad ones.
Handballing to someone in a better position straight away and making your teammate better is a start.
WE CREATE GOOD HABITS WHEN WE TRAIN WELL AND PRACTICE OUR SKILLS.
Well done Angus who started on the half forward line then played Fullback for the second half, not lots to do but made sure he was on his man and keeping everyone in line, James for playing when he was not feeling well, he worked hard all game. Ben Hales we is playing some great footy as well with some fantastic burst of pace splitting the opposition apart, Indie enjoying a run on the ball has improved every game and is becoming a great competitor. Will was great in the second half running through the midfield and using the ball well. Elliot who has the knack of being in the right place again took a couple nice marks up forward, Thomas who is getting better at staying on his man in defence and up forward presenting as an option, Henry in the ruck in the first half working well with the midfield then during the last pushing in front of one of BH key defenders to create a contest. Ben N super over head all day and dominant in the ruck. Prest great across half forward in the second giving us a target. Lenny either stopping BH or attacking and setting us up on the wing. Darcy great start in the midfield and even better across half back, Xavier impacting the game at very opportunity, hard running forward and working hard back to lay some nice tackles in defence, Liam really worked hard up forward and was rewarded with a goal, Kai has strung a few really solid weeks together and is finishing the season strong and was unlucky not to kick a goal today, likewise Julian is finding his confidence and set the tone early in the midfield ,Paddy super in the midfield and provided plenty of run off half back and was first to the ball all day, Ollie has been great in defence working hard to run back and get on a man especially when the ball has left his area, he run 40 meters across the ground at one stage to make sure a BH player was not free then as he does just snapped a lazy banana to finish out the day, Nugget who impacted the game from the interchange, playing forward and getting in and winning some contested ball around some big bodies, nice handball out to advantage and some great roving work.
Well done again on your persistence and endeavour, keep working hard and practice your skills at every opportunity. Even when you are just walking to school or down the shops, take a footy have it your hands, practice bouncing it and flicking around in your hands. All those simple thigs will help you all keep improving.

QUARTER 1: SHARKS 3.2.20 WARRANDYTE 0.0.0
This week we trekked down the road for an early morning start against Warrandyte. In cool but calm conditions, we celebrated the 50 Game milestones of Logan R. and Zac with the boys breaking through the banner and determined to get off to a fast start. Led by Logan R. who was everywhere early, the Sharks dominated possession through the midfield, playing the game in our forward half and taking a three goal lead into quarter time while keeping the opposition scoreless.
QUARTER 2: SHARKS 8.2.50 WARRANDYTE 0.0.0
Fellow milestoner Zac had a sensational second quarter, winning the ball in the midfield, in the air and kicking a few himself. With the mids receiving excellent support in the ruck from Logan H, Nate and Charlie, the Sharks really put the foot down. Logan S set up our wall and counter-attack from centre half back, our back flankers provided run and carry while our mids rotated between on ball and wing and supported each other at the contest. James and Oscar presented well up forward, both finding the goals – the latter had a day out kicking 5! At half time, the Sharks had not only kicked away, but kept Warrandyte scoreless again.

QUARTER 3: SHARKS 13.3.81 WARRANDYTE 0.0.0
The Sharks haven’t always had their goalkicking boots on this season, but after some good training sessions over the last few weeks their skills have started to shine through. Starting the third quarter, the Sharks were ferocious at the ball. Fyn, Cash and Dan N. were tough over it, Isaiah maintained his position well on the wing and our forwards contested well in the air. Campbell ran onto a few ground balls in the forward line and found teammates in space. Chains of possession began with strong intercepts at half back, clean chains of handball and passing by foot had the ball quickly through the midfield and we were able to capitalise in front of goals.
QUARTER 4: SHARKS 15.5.95 WARRANDYTE 0.0.0
Coach Daniel Bullen asked the Sharks to finish the game off strongly and play as a team in the final quarter. With the magnets thrown about, it gave a few of the boys an opportunity to play in different positions. Justin had a super quarter at half forward, highlighted by an evasive baulk and long kick finding a teammate in space through which we scored, while Liam worked hard and was clean below his knees. All in all, it was one of the team’s best and most consistent performances of the year, and we will work at taking this form into next week’s match against Glen Iris.

Qtr 1:
Round 12 was played at Lynden Park in heavy conditions. Captains Josh and Beau led the boys out, with Josh also celebrating his 50th game. Despite kicking into a stiff breeze, the signs were great from the outset, with Sharks players tackling and attacking the ball with great intensity. Lachie battled away in ruck and won plenty of the ball around the ground, while Alby, Will F, Tom E, Will T and Harvey all contested hard and provided great support to the backline. The backline comprising Ned, Gabe, Tom B, Christian, Isaac and Danny was working overtime, and did a wonderful job to only concede 1 goal for the quarter. Despite the ball spending a significant portion of time in the Sharks backline, half forwards Jonah and Floyd continued to present strongly up the ground. Josh, Granger and Beau all applied great pressure in the forward line, resulting in a goal to Felix against the flow of play.
Qtr 2:
The boys were kicking with a favourable breeze in the 2nd quarter. Lachie continued to work hard around the ground in ruck, while Gabe, Alby, Tom E and Zane were all extremely productive through the midfield, enabling the game to be played in the Sharks forward half. Jonah and Josh played exceptionally well at half forward, with Will F, Harvey and Felix also providing great pressure and delivering great contributions in the forward line. Noah’s handball
Nate and Zac fly high for the mark.
We celebrated the 50 Game milestones of Zac and Logan R.
Oscar had a day out, kicking 5. Campbell and James got around him after this clean grab and snap.

Park Orchards 11.8.74.Def Ashburton 5.6.36
Beautiful day for footy, dry deck no wind, playing at Domeney for the 1st time in months, we knew we were in for a good spectacle.
Boys started well kicking 3 goals to nil in the 1st ¼ with the ball shared around well. Dookes giving us 1st use of the footy with our midfield brigade willing the ball forward at the stoppages.
2nd quarter saw the opposition respond kicking 2 goals to 1 to bridge the gap at the main change. We become stagnant in the final stages of the ¼ and backline were loose causing Ashburton to get on top. Special mention to Lachie A, Austin and Riley who really presented for the 1st half.
Message at halftime was to be more game and take risks, fleet footedness and hard running would see us get back on top if we were brave. Couple of moves bringing Felix into the middle and Lucas to half forward worked to our advantage seeing the boys come in 3 goals up at ¾ time.
Final term was our strongest with some more moves to increase our running capacity and Logan and Zac both kicking multiple goals, which was fantastic to see. I thought Jayden and Will also presented really well in the forward line giving us plenty of spark.
Boys ran out 6 goal victors, which was very satisfying. Big Thank you to Daniel N, Logan R and
to Jonah who proceeded to snap a goal from the ‘pocket’ was a real highlight. The entire backline led by Ned, Floyd, Tom B, ‘running man’ Christian, and solid defenders Will L and Will T was accountable and disciplined, and did a sensational job to concede 0 points.
Qtr 3:
The Sharks were kicking into a persistent breeze in the 3rd quarter, and despite the opposition kicking 3 unanswered goals in a 5 minute block, general work rate and contesting from Sharks players was as good as we’ve seen all year. Q3 highlights came from Jonah who continued his great game, demonstrating his consistent ability to gather the footy cleanly below his knees, skipper Josh who did a ‘power of work’ at full back, Harvey who continually threw his body into contests, resulting in numerous defensive spoils, Lachie who executed a beautiful diving smoother, and warriors Gabe and Alby who both tackled hard and won numerous contests at half back. In addition, the versatile Ned showed great leadership in the midfield, playing a nice combination of solid offensive and defensive footy.
Qtr 4:
The Sharks continued their strong work in the final quarter and were rewarded with a good running goal from Will T. Q4 highlights came from Danny and Granger who continued their strong tackling and contested play on their respective wings, Will F who continued to compete with great energy and executed ‘tackle of the game’ in the final term, skipper Josh who competed strongly in ruck, and captain Beau who applied himself extremely well throughout the game. In addition, Gabe, Jonah and Alby didn’t stop trying and all capped off wonderful games. All in all, it was a great hit out for the boys, and once again, the coaches were extremely proud of the effort, endeavour and determination applied by all Sharks players.
Goal Kickers: Felix, Jonah & Will T.

Park Orchards 9.12.66 def Kew 8.6.54
The YJFL ladder had us bottom, and Kew Rovers top…but with our recent form and efforts, and for the first time this season, with all players available, we knew that we could beat Kew.
This was our mantra before the game….are we a bottom team? If no, then let’s make sure we play like a top team.
We welcome Jake G back into the team after 7 long weeks out with injury, and Rossi returned after a 4 week injury.
The energy and positivity in the room pre-game was awesome….as it was when we ran onto the ground.
We dismissed the ladder with contempt, and with “Play Your Role” written on the Board and ingrained into each player, the game started.
Slow starts have been a challenge for us…but not today….
Ollie immediately gave us the advantage in the ruck, Josh G was clearing the ball, Jake looked like he hadn’t missed a game, and we had the luxury of playing Josh Smillie at centre half Forward. With the whole team tackling with intensity, running hard, and putting pressure on
every Kew player, we continually drove the ball forward, where Josh Smillie was leading from the front.
With us hitting the scoreboard first, there was an energy and commitment that we have been trying to see every game…finally, it was appearing from the first bounce.
Andy H was amazing at centre half back…marking and playing on, and driving us forward with long kicks.
Quarter Time; Park Orchards 3.2.20, Kew 0.1.1
We knew Kew would come out hard….and they did, proving why they are a top team. But again, our defence stood tall. Max, Cooper, Taity and Quinny were under siege, but they stood tall. Again, Andy was intercepting marks and sending the ball back to our forward line. Meanwhile, Joel was playing his role perfectly as our designated kicker after behinds…he ran fast and long and cleared the ball.
Most pleasingly, not only did we withhold against the Kew pressure, we maintained our relentless approach, and kept scoring.
Josh S continued his strong marking, and was proving more than a handful to the 3 opponents who continually harassed him…even though coming off briefly due to a head knock, he returned to kick another two goals.
Jack and Lachie D were feeding off the packs created by Rossi’s contests, Sammy and Wilbur were working their butts off to offer options on the outside, and Flynn on a wing followed our game plan perfectly, keeping us moving forward and competing successfully against bigger bodies.
Half Time; Park Orchards 5.5.35, Kew 3.3.21
With the words of the Kew team, ‘Let them celebrate at half time, let’s see what the score is at the end”, ringing in our ears, we would not lie down.
Again, Kew came at us hard…kicking the first goal of the quarter.
Pleasingly, our strategy of locking the ball in, causing stoppages and eliminating turnovers was working.
We were lowering our eyes and playing smart football. Just before three quarter time, Gabe, who was providing with run into the forward line, centred a ball to Josh S rather than blazing away…another goal to us.
Every time Kew came within a goal, we found the will to kick away, thanks to everyone playing their role. Our onballers of Dan, Josh G, Jake and Ollie continued to dominate while down back Tymmsy was his usual hard at it self; Jake continued to terrorise the packs.
¾ Time; Park Orchards 8.8.56 to Kew 6.4.40
The last quarter was intense to say the least. With a vocal, supportive home crowd, the boys were magnificent. Kew kicked two quick goals to draw close…..but forward pressure from Tom ‘Tippa’ Worthington and Harley led to a goal…and then another. Max nearly sealed the deal with a poster and Jack F cleverly knocked the ball forward, only to hit the post….by this stage, although exhausted, the boys stuck to our game plan…and ran out winners.

This group of boys deserved this win!!!! Throughout a challenging season, where the fixture has seen us play all the top teams a number of times, and only one of the 4 teams eventually relegated, through injuries to key players, and through some coaching mistakes, they have never given in, always remained positive and always given of their best.
It was a wonderful team win. Mention also needs to be made of Captain Josh Smillie, who kicked 8 goals from Centre half Forward. His was a match winning game…an incredible and inspiring performance.
We look forward to our last game, following the bye, against Ashburton, where with the same level of endeavour and spirit, we can finish the season with back to back wins.
Huge thanks to all parents and friends for supporting the boys during what was an incredibly memorable and satisfying win.

After a stirring victory last week (Did I mention Sam kicked 5 goals straight??), we travelled to Camberwell to take on the other Sharks. We really wanted to challenge ourselves, we did not play a 4 quarter game last time we played these guys and they ran away with a comfortable win, we wanted to redeem ourselves.
We were short for players, Ollie played with a bung foot and Dan had one good leg, and we lost Oscar in the last qtr with a hand injury - but despite these challenges, the Team played so well. We gave these guys a bit of a fright and they walked off sore and tired with 4 points as we took it right up to them.
We got ourselves off to a slowish start, but we bounced back after a few minutes and had control of the ball for most of the first quarter. We pushed our forward line quite deep to create plenty of space to lead into and Sammy got his timing spot on, led well into space and took a nice mark on the lead from a beautiful pass from Bara, who got on the end of some great play from Kye and Oscar. Sammy slotted through the goal. Champagne footy and the kids made it looked really easy.
Second quarter we let the other sharks in by not being accountable for our players. We still fought hard in and around the contest, but we struggled to get the ball out of our defensive half. Still, the other Sharks did not make the most of their opportunities and we were still in the game
at half time. 3rd quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle, Adamo snapped a nice goal for us and did so again in the final term to help us outscore our opposition. Last time we played this ground he kicked 2 also, a happy hunting ground.
Whilst we lost the game, we came here to earn some respect and we did that by the way we played, outscoring the other team in the final term with 16 of our own players. Our boys were hard, but fair with the footy and the opposition coach was impressed with how much we’d improved from the last time we played the Sharks.
Some notable mentions:
Shezza - played well in the BP. Used his body well in the contest, strong through the hips and had quick hands to get the ball out of the packs. Helped create for us out of the back line.
Ben - Had a great game at FB. Towed up his opponent, had about 10 marks and stopped many goals on our last line. Been super reliable in the back line this year.
Adamo - Had a go in the back pocket, but the match ups weren’t right so we swung him forward and played really well at HFF slotting 2 nice goals. Quick to get ball to boot if he can sniff a goal.
Ollie - Started on the ball and was then swung into defence. Put his body over the ball time and time again and was rewarded with well earned free kicks. Was able to get forward of the ball to help us transition to our forward line.
Nathan - Played CHB and in the ruck. Did really well all day. A natural defender, and did well in the ruck and around the grounds. Won a lot of taps against a much taller opponent, we get a lot from big Nath when he’s around the ball.
Kye - Started at HBF and then went on the ball. Kye is a natural intercept defender. Starts a lot of our run from half back and tackles like a mad man. Went for a few nice evasive dashes with the ball, he’s hard to catch and great to watch.
Bara - Played a great game on the wing. Set up a lot of our play and tackled so hard, laid a number of big hard tackles on boys much bigger than him.He was in everything.
Bailey - Had another great game on the ball. His kicking has really improved this year, but his contested ball is off the charts. He set the standard for his team mates in terms of attack on the footy.
Connor - was shifted around all over the place and did well with the multiple positions we played him in. Was up forward early and positioned himself well to get the ball through transition as a bit of a lead up player, then switched to defence and got lots of his own footy. Did a great job.
Raph - First game back from a wrist injury and played ruck and CHB. Was really good in the ruck, winning plenty of taps but really picked up his effort around the ground getting quite a few kicks. Was accountable when put at CHB, had a really good game.
Georg - Played well on the ball and at HBF. Really hard at the contest and has a beautiful kick which helped us clear the ball from the packs.
Layne - Was on the ball and played a good second half in particular. Chased hard and tackled as well as put his body over the ball to help lock it in. Last quarter was really good and nearly snapped a nice goal.
THE SHARK ATTACK 30 Edition 12, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 31 Edition 12, 2019
Oscar - Was great again today. Hard at the footy and took the game on, never sharks a contest and wins the ball and uses to advantage.
Max - Mad Max. Played another great game at CHF, used his body to advantage, chased hard and applied lots of pressure. Took a few good marks, his last 2 games at CHF have been fantastic.
Finn - Another player who played a few positions. Was really good in defence, competed well, took a few nice marks. His kicking has really improved over the last few weeks. Laid a few nice tackles as well.
Dan - Had a bad knee, but did well as a deep forward for us. Unlucky not to snag a goal in the 2nd quarter. Despite his injury he still played a role for us, which was really important for the Team.
Sam - Looked dangerous again, kicked a nice goal in the first quarter and a bit unlucky not to have a few more. FF might be his new home after being in the back line and on a wing during the year.

WOW!! What a game of football, where to start…..
On a near perfect day for football, sun shining, little to no wind and great ground full of grass (with a small muddy patch in the middle) and our boys are playing some good football.
We asked the boys to continue the momentum this week and keep building on the foundations laid earlier in the season. With finals only a few weeks away we are not guaranteed a spot and sitting fourth, we need to keep improving and winning.
We were off with a bang with a centre clearance down to Polly for a goal and we were away. The first qtr saw us kick 5 goals with Sonders and Joel kicking one each on the run, Polly leading strongly to kick 2 and Josh Baldori snagging one for himself.
The second qtr started much the same with another 5 goals kicked this time Fraser got in on the action and we encouraged the boys to take the game on, handball to space and look for each other on the angle, this way we could move the ball freely. This also gave us the opportunity to rotate the boys through some different positions to learn different positions. Our first test of that was rotating both JT and Sonders to the bench, a game move by the assistant coach for those that know JT and Sonders well!!
Morcs and Tobias controlled both of their wings with both boys continuing to play great football. Tobias finished the day at fullback and still managed to take some of those dashing runs.
Speaking of runs, Foxy took a great run through the middle with 4 bounces and Humey took them on with a run and 2 bounces himself.
At half time we set up a little plan leaving Polly alone in the forward line with everyone playing up high and asked the boys to hit him up. With another 2 goals Polly did just that. David Broadbent got himself 2 goals, a great reward for his hard running all day. Baldori snagged another by working his opposition under the ball and it was another fantastic qtr. Matty Parrott continued his hard work from the first qtr and played his best game fo the year. At this point we put Demps down back and had Charlie VB in the ruck and he did an awesome job feeding Tommy Rees who worked tirelessly all day on the ball.
The last qtr saw us put JT and Ace at full forward and Mr Reliable, Oakesey at CHF and he managed to snag a goal for himself. Zac was running amok down forward and had a shot on goal, Tige had a run on the ball along with Sebby Lee.
Overall a wonderful day with plenty of positives for our group. The next couple of weeks will be a great test as we play some top 4 teams and work towards a spot in the finals.
Well done boys!!

Park Orchards 5.4.34 def by Camberwell 16.14.110
Camberwell are the top team. They have been flogging everyone. Our first meeting this year was a 13 to 4 goal drumming. But we played OK & never gave in.
So against Camberwell again was always going to be a big task.
Mitch was captain this week & spoke really well before the game about 2nd & 3rd efforts, tackling & leading hard. We also mixed up the magnets a bit this week with our quest to find a forward to replace Dan W who was injured last week. Hope you’re better soon Big Dan.
So Rhys went forward for the first quarter & gave a real contest. While we failed to hit the scoreboard, Rhys gave us the target we needed. At the other end, Camberwell kicked 5 goals. The backline tried really hard. Brodie & Bo attacked the ball hard. Jacob was a rock on the last line. Jack continues to develop & plays his role every time. Up on the ball, Sam was looking in good touch with Ben S running hard. Ben W chased & harrassed & caused turn-overs through is pressure. The scoreboard didn’t reflect our effort but we were playing as well. Could we sustain it going forward.
In the second quarter we again attacked hard. Mitch grabbed a nice goal as did Robbie who snapped a great goal from the pocket. We were close on another occasion from Ben S. What we really liked was the connection & use of the ball. There was a 6 chain possession that lead to a shot at goal. There was another of 5 when we intercepted their foray forward. Dan S is
in good form at the moment & either forward or back is attacking the ball hard. Despite again our efforts, their skill & class was too much & they went into halftime well on top. Pleasing our intensity & pressure had been maintained.
After halftime, Harry moved forward to be that target in attack which he carried out magnificently. Remi moved onto the ball & was dominate around the stoppages. Robbie moved to the wing & his elusiveness was on full display continually winning & pumping the ball forward. Rhys continued to play well as did Sam on the wing. Lucas had had a great first half & in the forward line was a continual threat. Blake had a rest forward & his pace with his 2 bounce run showed a lot of skill & we encourage him to keep taking the opposition on. Jacob moved forward & ran hard, used the ball well with a great kick to Harry & Harry duly slotted his first goal of the game. Beau O has the best pair of hands & continues to win contested mark & loose ball battles. He played wing & midfield for the majority of this week again with his usual poise. At 3/4 time we were 66 points down. In the huddle, we agreed that the score was effectively 0-0 & we made a vow to try to win the final quarter.
Brodie moved on the ball & immediately won the first stoppage he attended. Oscar also moved to the backline & took on the game on a number of occasions, getting the ball on his boot kicking quickly & long. Harry took a towering grab & settled well putting through the long set shot for his second of the match. Liam took a good mark from a Harry pass but just failed to make the distance. Without losing confidence he then marked the clearing kick, looked inside & found Remi. Remi settled & put a good set shot through for his first goal for the Sharks. Well done Remi. It capped off a great game for Remi & he went onto win the opposition medal. At the final siren we had lost by 76 points but had won over the opposition who said it was the hardest game they’ve had over the past month.
Overall, we were outclassed by a very slick outfit.
But our 5 goals was a great return & our effort was first class. A higher score than the previous meeting. Our ball use was best for the season. If we can maintain this effort & intensity for the final 2 weeks we can definitely get another win on the board.
Well done to everyone on their attitude. Not easy when the opposition is so much better but we bought the right effort.

Park Orchards 8.10.58 def by Ashburton 10.9.69
We were playing away again at Ashburton and Lochie Kelly led the boys as captain for the day. With Ashburton second on the ladder, we were facing our second tough week in a row and knew that we needed a fast start to put scoreboard pressure on the opposition.
The first 10 minutes of the game was the opposite of what we needed. Ashburton were dominating from the clearances and our opposition was loose everywhere. We were lucky not to be further behind on the scoreboard as Ashburton kicked the first 3 goals, although the boys switched on and kicked our first goal and from that point we were well in the game. We went to the first break down 4.4 to 1.2 in what proved to be a costly first quarter.
In the second quarter we continued on with our strong play, with some terrific passages of play across the wing and we started to get more of the ball from clearances, however Ashburton were still doing well. One of our key moves for the day was when we switched Brock Pellinger-Riley to the ruck and sent Lachlan Jury to full back with good effect as we started getting some first use of the ball and Lachie slotted in nicely at full back. We closed the margin and at half time were down 6.7 to 4.3.
We started the third quarter strongly as we continued to rotate players through various positions and closed to within a goal of the lead at one stage, before a late goal to Ashburton had us down 8.8 to 6.5 at the final change.
For the second weekend in a row we had an opportunity to come over the top of the opposition and similar to last week we gave up a goal to the opposition in the opening few minutes of the last quarter. The boys fought back with a goal of their own and ended up outscoring Ashburton 2.5 to 2.1 in the last quarter although it wasn’t enough and we lost the game 10.9 to 8.10.
It was another terrific effort form the boys and if not for the first 10 minutes we would’ve been back in the top 4. We’re back home at Domeney for the final 2 weeks of the season with must win games against MacLeod St Damians and then Bundoora for the second time in 4 weeks. If we bring our best footy for the 4 quarters then we’ll win both games so a good turnout at training for the final 2 weeks is a must for us to be as prepared as possible.

Orch 16.7.103 def ASHY 5.7.37
Ashburton had talked up his lads chances as the team to meet Orch19 in the Granny and the confidence was booming from the ASHY lads as they hit the ground. The Sharks were ambushed early with the playing group unaccountable, the pressure non-existent and literally no intensity. Game plan was out to lunch, endeavour was at an all-time low. This had put the backline under the pump, and the rotating back six had to work hard to save forward entries from being converted and repel the barrage of opportunities being presented to the opposition forwards that was the by-product of the aforementioned. Again, Humpf was strong in the air and Lenny was having a cracker in his 150th.
Scores Orch 0.1 to Ashy 2.4.16
Enter “Angry Touty” who warned the playing group, who were looking to through teammates under the bus, that the accountability had to be looked at in the mirror and asking the players to direct their attention toward their own performances for the next quarter, and his sage like wisdom was able to calm the group, nay, inspire them, to perform miraculously with hard ball gets up from Matty Faulkner, who had an all-time game and kicked three as well, Jacko setting new standards of ferocity at the contest and being rewarded with multiple frees that were well earned, the forward line getting busy with Wally, Foxy, Sammy, Macca and Rossi all getting busy while the Mid-field, lead by Zach, with Deccers and Will Newton went about winning the centre clearances and giving great opportunity to the forwards time and again. That was a display from every player on the ground of the intensity diaklled to 11. The pressure off the
barometer. The attack likened to crazed cannibals, ball use was superb and precise, and every disposal was well measured, commendable, and the best quarter they have put together all year in my humble opinion.
Score Orch 7.2.44 to Ashy 4.4.28
The Third continued with blood in the water and another 5 were piled on, plus the defense was denying entry at every chance, with Goals to thorny, Wally stinger, Newts and Rossi, the ball was shared around and the opportunities presented themselves through team work and not through individual talent. The ebb and flow of the paly was now well I control of the playing group and they knew that the strength that they have played with all year was serving them well.
Scores Orch 12.5.77 to Ashy 5.5.35
The final quarter continued as the Third and second had, but ASHY decided that they would try and up the aggression and to the credit of the Orch19 group, level heads prevailed and the footy was answer enough. Rossi and Macca (2) hit the board again Stinger racked up his third for a great day out.
Final Scores Good guys 16.7.103 to ASHY 5.7.37
Our magnificent sponsors, Opulent Homes, awarded three articles from their #opulenthomeswinter2019collection to players, as selected by the coaches to have put in outstanding performances all day. The limited edition charcoal hoodie was given to Jacko for a sensational performance, the versatile zipper vest was presented to Matty Faulkner for his 3 goal haul and tenacity all day and Rossi was the proud new owner of the T, splendid in black, for his lead up play all day and great work at ground level also.

Banyule sitting in fifth position, one game behind us on the ladder were going to be desperate to beat us and keep their finals dreams alive. Fortunately the weather was kind with cool conditions, hints of sunshine, no great breeze to speak of favouring either end and a ground that although didn’t look pretty was good for football.
Our two captains for the week in Scarlett and Ella were all set to lead our team for the third last game of the home and away season. Both girls were the obvious choices to captain given their previous match day performances and efforts on the training track. We were missing three players this week in Jaide, Bianca and Grace Bettiol. Leaving us with one rotation off the bench.
Our opposition in Banyule had progressed well as a team and loomed as a real threat. They were keen to impress early, they looked strong and well drilled and had come off some good wins in the weeks leading up to this game. As the game got started it was evident our girls were not switched on as Banyule jumped us early. They were first to the ball as we were stargazing, being forced to do all the chasing and tackling. Banyule put on the scoreboard

pressure kicking the first point and then goal and led us into half time without us scoring.
The one thing you could tell was that Scarlett and Ella were working hard. Scarlett copped a big knock to the head as her head hit the turf, which didn’t stop her from being one of the most dominant on ground. She was well supported by Willow who had a break out game, racking us the possessions early impacting a number of contests and going on to win the opposition medal in a terrific display. Sienna Pollock worked her way into the game nicely gaining plenty of touches and Mia SJ & Allie continued on with their standout seasons.
Grace D looked threatening up forward, as did Zara and Charlise as they got in space and provided good targets for the midfield. Charlise used her body well to shepherd a few times which was important and something we do not see enough of. Sienna S and Charlotte P also moved forward and looked likely to score whenever the ball entered their area.
The second half saw a shift in momentum as we lifted, increasing our work rate and took over control of the ball. Our tackling improved, our kicking became long and direct and we were now first to the ball. Ava was everywhere, Mia Bosna was again important through the midfield and defending and Indi swept up anything that came her way with all three girls beating their opponents. Fortunately, Charlotte K continued with her goal scoring and kicked one when it counted most. Bonnie worked her way into the game nicely as she continued to take the game on.
We went into the last quarter down by one point as the tempo lifted from both teams dramatically. The biggest moment in the game came when the ball headed in Tia’s direction as she was one out on the backline with her opponent and two Banyule running at her head on. Tia beat her opponent to the footy, gathered it and kicked it long out of defence to stop any score. Had she not attacked the footy the way she did, Banyule were sure to score and chances are we would have lost the game. Well done Tia!
We stuck to our motto of working harder for longer and were rewarded in the end scoring 4 points to Banyule’s no score in the last quarter. It was a well fought out, tough game with plenty of sore bodies in the end. Not only do we stay in third position on the ladder but also we are now two games clear of fifth with two games to go. We know what it takes to win and we learnt from this game that if we do not switch on early, quality teams like Banyule could push us to our limits.
Again, the challenge is set for us next week as we head to Parkside to take on a team sitting second on the ladder who are full of confidence. Let’s show them how it is done!
Congratulations again on a hard fought win.

Overseas vacations (1), injuries (3), school volleyball tournaments (3)…the stresses in running a footy team- OML! We managed 14 players for our game against Fitzroy at the lovely Stintons (Home of the best Hot dogs and steamed Dimmies).
In a nice gesture our umpires Bruce and Angus greeted the players in the changerooms prior to the game and wished us all a great game. Tim and Dave both reinforced our key values which motivated the girls for a ripping 1st quarter of football.
The girls got off to a cracker, with Lana smashing the ball out of the ruck to our swift midfield, belting the ball into our forward line and before we knew it Jazzie had kicked our first goal of the day. This was the start of a flurry of goals for the Reds, thanks to the brilliant defensive pressure that prevented any forward penetration by Fitzroy. Tilly, Courtney, Jazz, Lana, Flynn and Dakota looked like enforcers on the ground, protecting their teammates with brilliant shepherds that allowed our players time and the balance to deliver to their team mates with precision kicks and handballs. Our skills certainly shone in the first quarter. One of our gun defenders Chelsea slotted in our 2nd, whilst Mia confidently kicked a beautiful goal running along the boundary line and Lauren seemed to have the ball on a string kicking 4 goals from various positions around the forward line. A highlight in the 1st quarter was Chloe Lee brilliant mark in front of goal. Our boundary umpire, leaped the fence in one clear scissor jump, (Circa, 1960 Rome high jump Olympic Games) ran 20m behind the goal posts, threw his right
arm up, jumped on his tippy toes and yelled, “Kick it to me…kick it to me!” Chloe relished the opportunity, kicking it beautifully to her Dad Heath for our 8th goal. What a sight- what a moment- lucky he marked it!
Chelsea keeps the scoreboard ticking Mia, very impressive with the opposite foot! over with another goal.
At the end of the 1st Quarter the Sharks lead 8.4.52 to Fitzroy 0.0.0
In another highlight for the season, our umpires Bruce and Angus ran over to us during Quarter time and requested to speak to the team. Quote, “In my 13 years of umpiring, I need to commend you girls in the way you play this game. I have umpired a lot of teams including many senior women teams and you girls are the best I’ve seen…I hope you all continue”
All players, coaches and parents were appreciative of Bruce’s comments, they were ‘special!’
Dave empowered our injured players to organise the team for the 2nd quarter, requesting they rotate all players, but position them to their skillset. With confidence, Jade read out the positions and directed the players to start the 2nd quarter. In true Courtney fashion, she attacked the ball and tapped it to Dakota who spiralled her kick to Kristen, onto Jazz who won the 1 on 1 contest to the running Flynn, to Chloe for her 2nd goal- what a start!
Zoe won some outstanding taps in the ruck and Petra’s run, bounce and carry was a highlight with her booming kicks (I’m sure they are getting close to 50m). Jazz smothered a big kick and the desperation, offensive and defensive pressure continued. The highlight was the sharing of the ball in this 2nd quarter encapsulating Tims words before the game to make your teammate look great! In a rare but fantastic occasion, our traditional full back Flynn kicked a goal which was followed by 2 more to Jorja, one to Kristen, another 2 for Chloe and Chelsea kicked her 2nd for the game.
The 2nd Quarter ended with the Sharks posting our highest score for 2 quarters, (16.8.104) to Fitzroy (0.0.0)
Well done Nat, Jade and Taliah for equalling Tim and Dave’s score at Quarter time 52 points per quarter.
Another clearance from Petra
THE SHARK ATTACK 50 Edition 12, 2019 THE SHARK ATTACK 51 Edition 12, 2019
The 3rd quarter started again with Lana winning the ball with some ferocious clearances. Jorja and Kristen continued with confidence taking on the game, creating space and setting up their teammates transitioning the ball forward with their run and carry and clearances. Flynn, Dakota and Petra continued to run and bounce the ball through the middle. Mia controlled the ball with her silky skills in her contests and kicked another great goal to start our 3rd quarter. Zoe continued to run and pursue the ball and kicked her 1st goal for the game, whilst Chelsea’s ability to always win the contested ball, saw her kick 2 more goals this quarter. The 3rd Quarter ended 12.12.132 to Fitzroy 0.0.0
Crunching tackle from Flynn
Coach Tim congratulated the girls for their selfless acts (blocks, sharing the ball and talk) and turned to Dave for support. Unfortunately, Dave was preoccupied and could only mutter, “I agree”, as he devoured his 2nd or was it his 3rd Hot Dog?
The last quarter started, with the girls setting the positions again for the last quarter. In Dave like brashness, Nat not only belted out the positions but gave the forwards some clear expectations in regards to repeat leading and movement (It was very impressive , a coach in waiting !!) Although it was the last quarter and we had held Fitzroy scoreless, the Reds did not waiver, continuing their pressure in every position. Mia and Lana’s determination to win possession of the ball saw 2 consecutive big smothers that resulted in turnovers for us to move the ball forward. Petra was rewarded for her attack, run and carry and kicked our first 2 goals for this quarter. The consistent efforts and teamwork by all players resulted in Jorja and Lana kicking a goal each. To their credit the Fitzroy girls never gave up and fought the game out to the final siren.
The final score Sharks 24.14.158 defeated Fitzroy 0.0.0

Congratulations Reds for another great game kicking our highest score for the season. Our defence was again outstanding, holding our past 2 opposition teams scoreless for the last 5 quarters. Keep up the brilliant work and attendance at training…its paying off big time!

Park Orchards 2.1.13 def by Banyule 10.11.71
Round 12 Park Orchards hosted Banyule who were sitting 3rd on the ladder, with our numbers depleted it was going to be a hard task. We started with 12 on the ground 2 of which were carrying injuries. The first half of the quarter was very even with Zoe doing well in the ruck and on ballers Vas, Tes and Mikayla working hard we soon had the ball in our forward line, unfortunately we couldn’t hit the score board though after many forward entries. We weren’t sticking our tackles like usual. Our defense, although under constant pressure, worked really hard with great efforts from Tilly, Anna, Abbey and Charli held them to 3 goals
Park Orchards 0.1.1 Banyule 3.1.19
The second quarter was again an even contest, Zoe and Grace were strong in the ruck winning most hit outs. We struggled to get clean possession out of the middle though to give our forwards the advantage we needed. The effort and running from Eve and Tess was certainly evident as we kept pushing hard to repel and clear the ball from congestion. Despite entering our forward 50 many times and Nat having one shot on goal we didn’t impact the scoreboard at all. Tilly was again outstanding at fullback and Anna was crashing into everything. Unfortunately Anna knocked her head after a heavy tackle just before half time and we decided to keep her off after half time…..down to 11
Half Time Park Orchards 0.1.1 Banyule 5.5.35
The third quarter sore a few positional changes and lift in our effort and pressure around the ball, strong tackles in our backline from Tilly, Zoe and great run and carry from Vic to Eve

allowed our forwards to keep the ball in our 50 which resulted in a goal to Mikayla. The run of Eve and Tess was outstanding. Charli and Abbey were as usual tenacious in their effort and although competing against girls who were probably 10kgs heavier they kept throwing themselves in. Charli tried a new tactic by heading the ball out of defense early in the third quarter, we did ask the girls to keep their eye on the ball but Chazza took this to the next level.
Park Orchards 1.1.7 Banule 8.7.55
We asked our girls to run the game out, the backline was under pressure the entire game but great marking from Grace and Tilly allowed us to clear the ball from deep entries and the game was played very much between the two forward lines. Continued run from Abbey, Charli and Vic was impressive whilst Zoe, Vas and Tess were applying a lot of pressure in the middle having spent the entire day on the ball without any real rotations. Tess kicked a deserving goal late in the game after a great handball from Vas. It was a hard day for our girls, to their credit they played the game out with effort and spirit. With two games to go let’s hope we can come home with a couple of wins.
