What are rotating biological contactors (RBCs)?
Rotating biological contactors allow the wastewater to come in contact with a biological medium in order to remove pollutants in the wastewater before discharge of the treated wastewater to the environment.
What are rotating biological contactors (RBCs)?
The Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) process is one of the most efficient fixed film wastewater treatment technologies.

The process consists of large diameter steel or corrugated plastic media centered around a horizontal shaft, placed in a concrete tank.

Biomass thickness ranges from 0.030 inch (0.75 mm) to 0.125 inch (3 mm) depending upon organic concentration, temperature and other process variables.

not required; microbial population accommodates organic and hydraulic fluctuations
• Lower expansion and retrofit costs – modular construction, reduced excavation costs

Applications of the RBC process
The RBC process is used in organic carbon removal (BOD), phosphorus removal, nitrification, denitrification, or various combinations.

It can also be used in nitrification upgrades, retrofit applications, and in upgrading trickling filter plants.

Advantages of rotating biological contactors
1. Short contact periods are required because of the large active surface
2. They are capable of handling a wide range of flows
3. Sloughed biomass generally has good settling characteristics and can easily be separated from waste stream
