    INTRODUCTION

    A. Scope

This Volume primarily contains a list of names and addresses of

individuals and organizations that are associated with the rotary wing

industry. An attemot was made to indicate the active or inactive

status of the names listed; also, a date is listed indicating the year

the firm or individual was last known to be active.

    B. Preparation

This Volume was oreoared and edited by E. K. Liberatore, Prewitt

    Aircraft Conraany.

The project of which this Volume is a part was initiated by the

Air Technical Intelligence Center. It was continued to completion by

    l50 B.C.

    Principle of jet driven rotor

    demonstrated. Hero of Alexandria

    with his Aeolipile.

    l490

    Leonardo Da Vinci outlined the

    scheme for a helicopter.

    l754

    The Russian scientist, Lomonosov,

presented to the Russian Academy of

Sciences details for a small helicop-

    ter capable of lifting thermometers

and other small instruments into the

    air.

    l768

Paucton in his "Theory of the

    Archimedes Screw" described a

    helicopter with two screws, called

    machine "Pterophore" France.

    l784

    The Launoy-Bienvenue helicopter

    was demonstrated before the French

Academy of Sciences. The blade was

made of feathers. This is the earl-

iest record of a helicopter model

    capable of flying.

    l8l8

    Count Lambertgye described a

rotorcraft to be used for dropping

    messages from balloons.

    l825

    Vittorio Sarti of Bologna, Italy,

    invented a coaxial rotor helicopter.

    l843

    George Cavley, the Father of

    British Aeronautics, proposed a

    lateral rotor helicopter driven by

    steam.

    l846 ca.

    Marc Seguin of France experimen-

ted with a large lifting screw; later,

he tested a flapping wing device.

    l847

Dr. Van Hecke built a helicopter

    at Brussels, Belgium. The machine

    had 4 rotors.

    l848

    The earliest known record of

rotary wing aircraft in the U.S.A.,

    being given thought. An anonymous

    writer for the "Scientific American"

    described a multi-rotor helicopter '

    with pusher propellers.

    l850

Phillips built a working model of

a lateral rotor helicopter with steam

    jet driven rotors.

    l857

First British patent for a helicop-

ter issued to Henry Bright for a

    coaxial rotor helicopter.

    l86l

    Mortimer Nelson, an American,

    proposed a helicopter weighing 500

pounds and powered by a 40 HP steam

    engine. Nelson obtained the first

    U.S. patent for a helicopter.

    l86l

    A helicopter designed by Prof.

    Mitchell was under development for

the U.S. Army, intended for use in

    the Civil War.

    l86l-63

    Ponton D'Amecourt was engaged

in helicopter research. He built a

4 pound steam driven coaxial model.

    l862

    William C. Powers of Mobile,

Alabama constructed a model of a

    proposed helicopter to carry explo-

    sives.

    l863

    Nadar (Felix Tournachon) pro-

    posed a coaxial rotor helicopter

in France. He conducted a series

of balloon flights to raise money

    for the project. The enterprise

    was a failure.

    l863

    Gabriel De La Landelle pro-

posed a huge tandem rotor helicop-

ter. The following year, he formed

    the "Societe De Aviation"

    l874

    The Achenbach steam driven

    helicopter was proposed. This craft

included a screw operating in a ver-

    tical plane.

    l874

    Coaxial rotor helicopter built at

the New York Novelty Works. It

was powered by a 2 HP vertical

steam boiler. The project was a-

    bandoned.

    l878

    The steam driven Italian Forla-

nini helicopter flew to a height of 30

feet and remained in the air 20 sec-

onds. This was a reduced model.

    l879

    The French Castel helicopter,

    driven by compressed air, was

damaged in tests. This was a

    reduced model.

    l904

    Charles Renard performed model

    demonstrations before the French Aca-

demy of Sciences, using rotors with

blades attached to the hub by cardan

    joints.

    l904

    Whitehead multiple rotor helicopter

    built at Bridgeport, Connecticut. No

    flights were ever made.

    l904

    At Lisieux, France, the Cornu

helicopter lifted its constructor for the

    first time.

    l907, April

    Otto Luyties, an American, tested

his coaxial rotor system. The rotors

produced a thrust of 700 pounds.

    l909

    Sikorsky coaxial rotor helicopter

    built in Russia.

    l909

    English tandem rotor helicopter built

in San Francisco. It was damaged July,

    l909.
