Bill also reported Helix HS Interact Meeting on 10/25/2018: Meeting was led by President Alice Hua. There were about 35 students present. Projects planned are a Stadium cleanup and a “Boo Bash”. In addition, Interact will clean up and tune up the Kroc Center. On November 3 the La Mesa Dale Fall Festival will again occur, with Interactors helping and attending. A Christmas party is being planned, with a movie as another possibility.
Clara Harris, Janet Castanos and Bill Pogue were present from La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club, which pleased the students, especially since Faculty
Advisor Kristen Huy had to leave at the beginning of the meeting. The Rotarians made effort to circulate with the Interactors before and after the meeting.
Janet Castanos talked about the Halloween Harvest Family Festival, which will be this coming Sunday on top of Mt Helix, from 2‐5pm. She asked for several volunteers from noon to six pm, and cleanup up volunteers from 5‐6pm. Interact President Alice Hua will send out the flier by email to all. Janet Castanos then talked about the Leadership Academy, which she designed and leads. The title of the Academy program is “Community Health”, meaning the social and organizational “health” of the community. She selects 15 from the high school applicants. It will be addressed by her, the Mayor, Police Chief, business men, and some other guest speakers. They do projects; last year they painted needy areas at Harriet Tubman School. It is excellent. It looks very good on one’s application for schools and jobs. There was a good
deal of interest by the Interactors.
The Interact meeting is very friendly and warm. We three had a most enjoyable time talking with various students before and especially after the meeting. Alice would like to go to UCSD in their computer program; we offered to write letters of recommendation for her, which pleased her and she accepted. Clara and Bill discussed, after the meeting, making effort to get a signup list from Rotarians; the desire is to participate and show the students and faculty that we mean business with Interact. We will talk with Jo Ann Barguest about that; she has favored it in the past. We pointed out that Rotarians are available to be Advisors for Interactor Students Senior Project. Christine helped one student to plan and give a large banquet with many courses and elegant food, and Bill helped one student to make connections with water experts (Engineers Without Borders, San Diego Dam Authority) in order to g et produced and installed three large water filters for a school of 600 kids in Kathmandu, their first clean water. Another student was introduced to Mayor Art Madrid, who got her off on a project about the history of downtown La Mesa. Her plans and accomplishments were subsequently adopted by the La Mesa City Council. At one point she had friends (including a couple of Rotarians) dress up in 1880 costumes, and she led an historical tour of downtown La Mesa, with contemporary conversation by the dress‐ups.
We lined up in groups by Month and shared some bit of info with each other. Ana is proud to be a breech birth, as was her Mother, and her daughter. Betty shares birthdate with Bruce Springsteen. Poor Max was alone in February.
