Rotary International - District 7120

October is “Vocational

Service Month”. Rather

incongruous as we approach

an election, to include that

of the President of the

United States. From all that

I read and hear: one may

never have worked prior to

elective office, and the

other may be out of touch

with the average working

man. Nice. And we

wonder why the rest of the

world may feel a little

uncertain about where the

U.S. is and is headed.

Rotary is moving forward with new ideas and revitalization

within our organization. For one area of interest we are

returning to the thrilling days of yesteryear…. We are once

again recognizing we are a networking organization, and

have been since 1905. That was how we got started, did so

very well, and then felt we were doing so too well and with

good results. The failure of success. Now, thanks to youth

and social networking, we have re-discovered who we are:

THE OLDEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL

(WORLDWIDE) NETWORKING ORGANIZATION!

So, every week I see lists of “networking” meetings and

functions. Most of those attending may have a network of

people, but not a network of people with access to jobs and

increased or better business. Think about what we have to

offer. If we do not have the information, position, or

business - we know the people who do. Or, we know the

people who know the people who know the people. We

have a great deal to offer just by inviting working people, or

those looking for employment to our meetings. When

employed, they just might join Rotary, but they will speak

well of us.

Rotary is based on our classification, i.e., what we or our

organization does/did. We are interesting and exciting due to

the very diversity of knowledge and experience we have.

Share it with the public and with Rotary, and in Rotary we

should gladly accept and appreciate a member’s knowledge,

experience, and talent. (Read that last sentence again and

digest it.) As I visit and listen to our Rotarians, there are

times I want to scream “Not all of what you need to know is

in your head(s) or in this room/club/town/region/etc.!”

Brendan Behan was nicer when he said “Talent borrows;

genius robs!” These days we might become Rotary Robin

Hoods and spread around the richness of Rotary’s

vocational wealth.

Oh, last month I was wrong when I stated 7 would read my

monthly letter. There were 8. I’d be delirious (and some of

you think I am) if the number grew to the number of the

month. In this case it would be 10, unless you look at the

name of the month or ….

Avon & Skaneateles Clubs

Fellowship & Peace by: Peter Adams, Skaneateles Rotary President

On Sunday September 16th, 2012 with beautiful blue skies

& temperature in mid 70’s , 35 Skaneateles, NY Rotarians,

& friends met 28 fellow Rotarians & friends from Avon,

NY for a Multi District Wine Tour down beautiful Seneca

lake!

We started at the Ventosa Winery on the East side of Seneca

Lake. While we had a working lunch, Avon Rotarian &

school principal Rob Lupisella, gave us a presentation about

his work in Nicaragua building a school for the children

there last year. The pictures & video of the impoverished

country, inclusive of the old school & the newly built school

helped to paint a vivid picture of the needs these people

have. It was well done & Rob had handmade baskets made

by the ladies of that Village for sale & a signup sheet for

those interested in going down there to do work to build a

second school! We’ll ask Rob to come to our Meeting in the

near future to show his presentation to the entire member-

ship!

Following our lunch, we headed to Three Brothers Winery

(which included a brewery ) and concluded at Zugibe

Winery which had relaxing Adirondack chairs, a deck, live

music, with views of the vineyards & the lake while we

enjoyed the late afternoon rays of the sun! We enjoyed each

other’s company & the fellowship with the Avon Club!

Who knows this just might become an annual trip!

The Keukonian

Do you have a passion to give back to the community, the

world? Want to be a part of one of the largest clubs on

campus? You should consider joining Rotaract.

Why Rotaract? YOU can be a part of something huge! The

motto is “Service Above Self” which represents what the

club stands for. Rotaract’s focus is community service. This

provides members with the opportunity to help be a part of

something bigger than them.

Keuka’s Rotaract is an internationally recognized club and

was recently awarded the Change Maker award. Also

recently, Keuka’s Rotaract has recently received a

shadowbox from the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort

Drum, NY. They received this shadowbox in recognition for

their ongoing support of the 10th Mountain Division. In the

shadowbox, there is the flag that the 10th Mountain Division

flew in Afghanistan while there as well as a certificate

expressing their gratitude for all of the support our Rotaract

club gave them.

Amy Moore, co-

president and

senior, has been a

part of the club

since first starting

her college career

here at Keuka. “I

think that campus

should get

involved because,

we get to help not

only the

community here,

we get to help the

entire world,” she

went on to say.

“My passion to

give back to the

community was

able to carry over

from high school

to college, which

is something I love.” Alex Morgan, fellow co-president and

sophomore, said after being in the club since 2011.

If you are interested, Rotaract meets every Tuesday from

5:00pm to 6:00pm in the Corning room in the Geiser.

By Paul Minor, Chair District 7120 Water Hygine and Sanitation (WASH) Committee

Sunday, November 4th is the Eastern Cities Dinner at the

Riverside Convention Center in Rochester. Last year

eighty-six clubs - 680 people - attended, Rotarians and

exchange students from all over the world. This is a great

chance to showcase what the 68 clubs of District 7120 are

doing to make “Peace Through Service” a reality.

The District WASH (Water Hygiene and Sanitation)

Committee will have on display a LARGE map of the

world. You can place stickers in each of the countries

where clubs are currently involved in an International

Project - these should not be just water projects. We want

to show all the projects where Rotarians are working to

build “Peace Through Service”.

WASH plans to prepare a Foundation Global Grant

request for next year that will support not just water and

sanitation in one or more areas of the world where we are

already doing good work, but also will include as many of

the other focus areas as we can in our project.

Please help us identify as many of these projects as we

can. We will have stickers for you to add to the map if

you don’t see your club represented.

Look for our table during the social hour - better yet, just

look for the map! Let’s show our fellow Rotarians just

how far District 7120 reaches!

Rotarian of the Month at Belmont

Rotarian Mike Healy was recognized as Belmont

Rotary’s Member of the Month for October. Mike has

lived in Belmont most of his life and chose to raise his

three daughters Carissa, Megan, and Devan here. High

school graduation led to service in the United States

Army, brief employment in local industry, and then a

career in law enforcement, from which he retired as a

New York State Bureau of Crime Investigator.

Always one to be active and involved in his

community, Mike is now in his third year as an

Allegany County Legislator.

Mike has served two terms as club president (1990-

1991; 2007-2008) and has served in various capacities.

He currently serves as the Club’s Vocational Chair.

Bath Rotary Presents Dictionaries On October 11th as part of October’s National Information

Literacy Awareness Month, Bath Rotary Club presented

dictionaries to all third graders at the Vernon E. Wightman

Primary School in Bath.

Displaying their new dictionaries are the students in Mrs.

Erica Streicher’s class. Back row left to right: Colleen

Clancy, Guidance Counselor at VEW; Elaine Tears, Bath

Rotary Club Public Relations Director; Becky Stranges,

Bath Rotary Club President and Literacy Project

Coordinator; Neal Wrinkle, local Rotarian; John Stranges,

Bath Rotary Club Vice-President; Erica Streicher, VEW 3rd

grade teacher. Absent from photo: Al Johnson, Robin

Lattimer, and Michael Slovak.

In a letter sent home to the parents of all third graders

Stranges wrote, “We hope you will take time to read with

your child and encourage the use of the dictionary whenever

an unfamiliar word should appear. A strong vocabulary is

a vital ingredient in the recipe for success in life. Together

we can share the dream that all children in the world may

be afforded a chance to become literate.”

The local club will also present dictionaries to all third

graders at Campbell-Savona Central School on October 18th.

Since this is the first time that the Bath Rotary Club will

enrich the school years for these students. Stranges and a

group of local Rotarians look forward to meeting those

students, their teachers, and respective administration.

In order to promote literacy further, highly valued by all

Rotarians, books, donated by the local club members, will

be given to the local library or some other institution or

organization in honor of the speakers at the club’s weekly

luncheon meetings. In addition, the local club sponsors

magazine subscriptions for the Dormann Library and fills

bookshelves at laundromats, banks, hospitals, and the

library with children’s books.

Avon Ambulance Building Dedication -

On August 19th, Ted Coyne, long time Avon Rotarian, was

surprised when he was diverted to the Avon Ambulance

Building, where a group of friends and family gathered to

pay tribute to his 57 years of continuous service to the Avon

Rotary-Lions Ambulance Service.

Ted was one of the original founders of the Avon

Ambulance in 1955, which started providing service to the

Avon community with a used hearse and a handful of

volunteer drivers. For a great majority of the years, Ted has

served on the board of directors, keeping an eye on

expenditures and making sure that the ambulance was fitted

with everything it needed to operate. When the ambulance

moved to its current home base, Ted was there donating

time, equipment and experience to help bring the facility up

to a suitable operational level.

Over the past 57 years, the Ambulance has provided

lifesaving services to those in need, and it is through the

generosity and dedication of those like Ted that has made it

all happen. It is an incredible feat that Ted has quietly

achieved to have dedicated this many years to a cause that

benefited so many citizens of Avon.

District Governor Visits Bath

On his visit to Bath Rotary, Governor J. Gaven Hurley

Naples Rotary contributes to

Ngamba Preserve

Based on DNA studies, we

humans are 98.7% chimpanzee.

With this statement Jack Jones

introduced his friend Stany

Nyadwi (pictured at left) to the

Naples Rotary Club. Jack is

researching his next book which

is tentatively called "My Brother

Chimpanzee." Stany is a co-

founder and manager of the

Ngamba Island sanctuary for

orphaned chimps in Uganda. The preserve is on a 100 acre

island in the middle of Lake Victoria in Uganda. The non-

profit sanctuary, now an independently operated wildlife

refuge, was established by The Dr. Jane Goodall Institute.

Dr. Goodall is the world leading authority on Chimpanzees.

Dr. Goodall is being

honored this month by the

United Nations for her

work. She invited Stany

and Jack to NY to be her

guests at the U.N. on Sept.

21st for the annual

International Day of Peace

ceremonies after learning

that Jack and his friends

were bringing Stany to the U.S. in September. Jack took the

opportunity to introduce us to Stany, one of only five people

in the world who can actually “talk” to Chimpanzees,

according to Dr. Goodall.

Jack has spent much of his journalism career writing about

prisoners and forensic issues. He has written books on the

Son of Sam, the man who murdered John Lennon and other

high profile killers. He is interested in the connection

between chimpanzee behavior and human violence.

Stany explained during an interview that, like the orphan

chimps, he also has survived life-threatening trauma and

loss of family. A member of the Hutu people, he lost his

parents and 6 siblings to a Tutsi murder squad while out of

his native country relocating 20 members of a besieged Jane

Goodall Chimp colony in Burundi. Besides talking to

Chimps, Stany is the Founder and Executive Director of a

Christian mission to aid human orphans. On the evening he

spoke to our Rotary, he was wearing his Chimp hat and

described our closest primate relatives as being strong,

smart and curious.

Stany also explained that Ngamba Preserve is in need of a

new fence to contain them. In the wild chimps need about

75 acres per animal to assure an adequate food supply.

Naples Rotary (continued):

Having 48 Chimps on a hundred acres presents real

challenges. The Naples Rotary Club voted to give the

preserve $500. These sanctuaries are becoming even more

important as habitat destruction had reduced the wild

population by 90% in under 30 years. Less than 100,000

chimps survive in the wild.

Last spring Genesee Valley high school student Mackenzie

Ward became the first person to ever receive the Belmont

Rotary Club “Rotary Youth Leadership Award”, enabling

her to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp in

Rochester, New York. Miss Ward engaged in activities

designed to develop and enhance the leadership qualities of

our youth. Mackenzie enthusiastically shared her

involvement in the camp activities stating, “I would go

Allison Osborn of YEA

visits Avon Rotary

YEA (Young Entrepreneurs Academy) is a groundbreaking

educational program offered at the University of Rochester

and SUNY Geneseo that takes students in grades six through

twelve through the process of starting and running real

businesses over the course of a full academic year. Students

work closely with local business leaders to cultivate and

research business ideas, write a business plan, present their

plan to a panel of investors (think Shark Tank meets The

Apprentice meets American Idol!), obtain funding, develop

their brand and actually launch their real, legally-registered

business. Through YEA!, kids 11 to 18 years old learn to

make a job, not just take a job.

At their Tuesday, September 25th meeting Avon Rotary

presented a check for $500 to help sponsor an Avon High

School student.

Haverling Interactors Support Their

Co-Advisor During Wineglass Marathon

On September 30th nine members of the Bath-Haverling

Central School Interact Club rose early, donned volunteer t-

shirts, held up their handmade poster, and awaited at the

mile 2 water station of the 31st Annual Wineglass Marathon

for their Co-Advisor, local Bath Rotarian Dave Stewart, to

run by and hear their cheer, “Run, Mr. Stewart, run! You

can do it!” Before and after Stewart passed by, the students

offered Gatorade to the other marathoners.

Also helping at the water station were Bath Rotarians Joel

Brazie, Bernie Burns, Betsy Burns, Al Johnson, Joanne

Sheehan, Elaine Tears, and Bill White. Joel Brazie, the

local club’s Director of Community Service, organized the

setup at the mile 2 water station.

Dave Stewart, also the local club’s Director of New

Generations, finished the 26.2 mile run in 4th place in his age

class, 70-99 year old males, with a time of 4:42:48. In

addition to Stewart local Rotarian Kelly Fitzpatrick ran the

2nd Annual Half Marathon which started in Campbell and

also ended in Corning. Fitzpatrick placed 3rd in her age

class, 45-49 year old females, with a time of 1:43:34.
