Past District Governor Jeff & Diane, thank you for a very successful year! The contributions to The Rotary Foundation exceeded PDG Jeff’s goal for 2010-11 and the books are not even closed yet. Congratulations! New Rotary Year brings new RI President… new Rotary Theme…new Emphases… new Governor. Every year, Rotarians all over the world welcome the new Rotary year with all the above changes; however, there are a few things that remain constant year after year. We, as Rotarians, uphold the same motto: Service Above Self. Our actions, thoughts, aspirations and priorities in serving humankind are guided by the same Rotary Principles such as The Object of Rotary; Avenues of Service and The Four-Way Test. Additionally, Rotarians adhere to the Core Values that encompass Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity, and Leadership. It is these guiding principles and core values that have kept Rotary strong even after more than a century of service. RI President Kalyan Banerjee introduces his theme, “Reach Within To Embrace Humanity”. He asks us to search first within ourselves, to understand that we have the same hopes, the same aspirations and similar problems. Whoever we are and wherever we live, each one of us yearns for the same peace and contentment and for the same fulfillment. What we hope to bring to others, we must first find within ourselves because what we wish for ourselves is what others wish for themselves. We look at our inner strength, our courage, our commitment and our dedication and these will direct our actions in making a difference in the life of others. For 2011-12, President Kalyan presents 3 areas of emphasis: Family, Continuity and Change. As we move forward during this year, we must remember to give our family great importance and priority. Let us extend our family to include our Rotary family and our community. I suggest that the next time you notice that someone has not been to the weekly meeting for two or more times, send a “Thinking of You” note. Or, ask your Rotarian friends how they’re doing. Get members to sign a card for a member for the birth of their child, or other significant family event. These small acts of kindness could be all that are needed to get a member to remain with the club. This year, my personal goal is to work with the various district committees is to increase the education of Rotarians on various Rotary topics in several smaller groups. I encourage the Assistant Governors (AGs) and the Foundation Area Directors (FADs) to work with the Rotary clubs in their own areas in identifying what specific Rotary topics are of interest to each of them. It is also my hope that through education and creating awareness, other elements of Rotary such as membership will be enriched; service projects become varied and will increase in number and participation and contributions to Rotary Foundation increase. In this issue of the Grapevine, you will find the criteria for the various awards, such as Club Achievement Awards, Literacy Awards, Presidential Citation and Changemaker Awards. I invite all the Rotary clubs in the district to be thinking early about these various awards and recognitions to maximize participation. Get your clubs activities and accomplishments recognized through these awards. I would like to congratulate the 15 Rotary clubs in our district that applied for and received District Simplified Grants (DGS) for 2011-12.The funds available through the DSG are a percentage of our Annual Giving from three years ago. This is truly Rotary Foundation at work. The list of these clubs and their proposed projects is found in this issue of the newsletter. Read all about their service projects. I, accompanied by my husband Gary, look forward to visiting the Rotary clubs in our district and personally experiencing the energy and vibrancy in each club. I would like to make my visit a conversation opportunity. Let’s remember that to be of service to others, we first Reach Within To Embrace Humanity”. Let’s make it a year of service and fellowship! To stress the importance of both membership and continued support of The Rotary Foundation, I have established the following criteria for recognition during 2011-12. These actions and criteria support the priorities and goals identified within the RI Strategic Plan: strengthen clubs, increase humanitarian service, and enhance public image.

Rotary Foundation requirements and membership requirements must both be attained for recognition. All clubs and districts that have been certified as reaching these goals will receive a certificate signed by me. In addition, the top 15 certified clubs and districts will be eligible for onstage recognition at the 2012 RI Convention in Bangkok. Sincerely, Kalyan Banerjee President, Rotary International, 2011-12

District Recognition District recognition has ONE Rotary Foundation contribution component and FOUR membership components. Districts that meet all requirements will receive a certificate. District governors must submit district results and certified club results no later than 10 April 2012.

To certify club achievements and make district calculations, governors should sign into Member Access on or after 31 March to draw up their club membership, monthly contribution reports for per capita achievement, and EREY eligibility report to confirm each active Rotarian’s contribution. Certification forms will be available on www.rotary.org .

The Changemaker Award will recognize Rotary clubs that make an extraordinary impact during 2011-12 through their work in the Avenues of Service. Clubs are invited to undertake a challenging array of activities in each avenue, with the goal of making positive and significant change in their communities and in the world.

Procedure Clubs should complete the following form to assess the impact they have made this year in each Avenue of Service. In order to qualify, clubs must complete a minimum number of activities in each avenue. All activities must be undertaken and completed between 1 July 2011 and 1 March 2012.

Each club should complete the form and send it to the district governor (not Rotary International) no later than 15 March 2012.

Governors will report the names of the qualifying Rotary clubs in their districts online through Member Access no later than 22 March 2012.

International Winners Governors will also select the top three changemaker clubs in the district — one each from a small club (fewer than 25 members), a medium club (25-50 members), and a large club (51+ members) — to be entered into a zone and international competition. The RI director will select three zone winners (one from each club-size category), and the RI president will select three international winners (one from each club-size category) to be recognized onstage at the RI Convention in Bangkok, Thailand, 6-9 May 2012.

International winners will be notified on 6 April 2012, in order to have enough time to book travel to attend the convention. RI will cover the cost of the convention registration fee, travel, lodging, and reasonable meal expenses for the three winning 2011-12 club presidents. Spouse or partner costs will not be covered by RI.

Elmira Rotary gives 'Four Way Test' Award

Elmira Rotary Club recently presented Misty Purdy with the "Four Way Test" award, an annual honor given by the club to the member who best exemplifies living the four questions of integrity. Misty has been involved with Strong Kids Safe Kids for a number of years, an annual event that continues to grow successfully. She has helped get the Community Kitchen project underway and guided it the first few years. Misty Purdy is the director of sales at Holiday Inn Elmira and Holiday in Express Horseheads. She is sales chair of the Upstate New York Hotel Marketing Association, chair of Strong Kids/Safe Kids, a member of Twin Tiers Young Professionals, and Leadership Chemung Alumni. In addition, she's an ambassador for the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce. Misty is Elmira Rotary’s president-elect, chairs the new membership recruitment committee and recently went to New Orleans where she attended the Rotary International Conference. She helps initiate new volunteer and fundraising projects, such as preparing and serving at Elmira's Community Kitchen and "Dancing With Our Stars," Elmira Rotary’s newest fundraiser.

Corning Rotary Presents Interact Charters

Corning Rotary Club presented charters to new Interact Clubs at Corning Free Academy and Northside Blodgett Middle Schools in the Corning-Painted Post School District.

At a recent meeting in which charters were presented to the new clubs, the Regional Interact Director for District 7120, Andrew Ashley, complemented the Corning Club for becoming the first of 68 clubs in District 7120 to establish Middle School Interact Clubs. In addition, he stated that Corning Rotary, now with two High School Interact Clubs plus the two Middle School clubs, has attained the largest number of Interact Clubs in his district.

Also at the luncheon meeting, Presidential Citations were presented to both the East High School and West High School Interact Clubs for the activities they completed during the 2010-2011 school year. To be eligible to receive such a citation, a club must score at least 30 points out of a possible 50 points on a questionnaire that measures the Interact Club’s activities of applying the Rotary principles of service on the international, community, and/or school levels in eight (8) distinct categories. The Corning High Schools were commended for being two of six Interact Clubs in his district that received the award this year. Andrew Ashley stated that “the awards speak to the dedication that the Corning Rotary Club has given to encouraging service, fostering active interest in the community, and offering the opportunity to develop our youth as leaders.”

Corning Rotary now with two High School Interact Clubs plus the two Middle School clubs, was led by Susan O’Leary, Corning Rotary’s President 2010-2011, Rotarian Michael Rossettie, advisor at East High School, Floyd English, advisor at West High School, and Dr. Geraldine Wolfe, advisor at Corning Free Academy and Northside Blodgett Middle Schools.

aples Rotary - Service Above Self Award

Eric Cotton, a senior at Naples Central School was awarded the Naples Rotary Club annual Service Above Self Award at last weeks Rotary meeting. Blanche Warner, chair person of the Service Above Self Awards committee presented the $750 award and stated the award is presented to a graduating senior who has shown dedicated service to the Naples community during his or her high school years and requires the student will continue their education beyond high school. Eric, an Honor Student at NCS, was a member of Ontario County Youth Court for 6 years, where actual trials are held for juvenile offenders. Teens perform the roles of judge, bailiff, jury, prosecutors, and defense attorneys, and they hand down punishments that they hope will redirect the offender's life without giving them a criminal record. Eric also volunteered at Cumming Nature Center doing maintenance work and he was a peer leader for three years at school, helping younger students with their reading. He participated in the Stroll for Strong Kids to benefit Golisano's Children's Hospital, worked at two Red Cross blood drives, helped with the NCS Adopt a Highway program, and at the ARC game night. Warner stated the Rotary Club will submit the cash award to Ithaca College where Cotton will continue his college education in the fall.

Pittsford Rotary’s Bike Drop

In 2010 the Rotary Club of Pittsford collected 517 bicycles for donation to Rochester Community Bikes Inc. where repairs are made before the bikes are given to persons needing a means of transportation. Bike Drop chair Steve Wilterdink wondered if there were enough bikes left in town to make a second collection worthwhile. There certainly were! Residents responded with another 215 bikes recently! Pittsford Rotarians and volunteers from RCB Inc. load bikes in this scene.

Elmira Rotary Presents Scholarships

The Elmira Rotary Club presented four high school seniors with its first Service Scholarships on June 14th. Winners were selected based on their overall accomplishments, but the primary focus was on their community service. Each student won $1,000. The four recipients pictured above are: (l-r): Ann Milliken, EFA senior; Molly Hill, EFA senior; Sean Mason, SHS senior; and Marie Caldwell, SHS senior. The Elmira Rotary Club offered this Service Scholarship for the first time this year, thanks to the success of its fund-raiser Dancing With Our Stars, which took place last fall.

This year, for the 4th year, the Gorham Rotary Club sponsored a team for the Canandaigua Relay For Life. Held June 11-12 at the Canandaigua Academy H.S. track, the event was well attended and raised over $50,000 for cancer research.

District Bulletin & Website Contest (continued)

This advance notice and criteria used in the judging is so the Bulletin Editors and Webmasters can be informed now rather than later in the year. A reminder will be sent out in the near future. One more concern - is anyone interested in judging the bulletins for this Rotary year? I need 3-5 judges. If you have any questions or suggestions please contact contest chairman Howard Selleck at [email protected].
